The Ace Combat cheese that you know and love (or hate) is done perfectly once again. Some are the missions are doing things differently just for the sake of doing them differently and it can be challenging in ways you may not be looking for, but that is the only low point of the game. Float around, shoot things, get shot at, fly into buildings accidently. Good simple fun.
Claro. English review: I do not recommend it. I went into Ace Combat with some expectations, because the game looked very good. It does have some interesting things, and when I saw that it was made in Unreal Engine, I thought performance could be a problem, but surprisingly, it ran well. My biggest disappointment was that I expected the game to be a bit more realistic. Not a full simulator, of course, but at least something a little more grounded. That was not the case. The game is very exaggerated, and that ended up bothering me. I am not saying the game is terrible, but it was not what I was looking for. Another important point is the price. Even on sale, I think it is a bit expensive for what it offers. If it were cheaper, maybe I would see it differently. What made me give up completely was a technical issue. Around the third, fourth, or fifth mission, the image started freezing. I could still hear the game, and my PC was working normally, but the game screen was frozen. I do not know if this problem only happened to me or if other people may also experience it, but for me that was the final reason to refund and stop playing. Overall, I do not think Ace Combat is a horrible game, but I also do not think it is worth the price. It has some good points, but between the exaggerated style, the price, and the freezing issue I had, it simply was not worth it for me.
I wrote this review for anyone who is excited for Ace Combat 8 and is considering getting this game based on that hype. It's a good game, but there are some things worth noting, especially if it's your first time playing a game in this series, or a flight-based game in general (you may just learn why nearly every game has an "invert look/Y-axis" option). Long story short: this is a very good game that is worth getting. It runs well and looks great, And it has a simple but endlessly fun gameplay loop. BUT unfortunately, it suffers from mechanical frustrations, limited technical options, requires a bit of extra work to get certain flightsticks/HOTAS to work, and has a frankly pretentious story/presentation (but great music). It's also worth saying that it is NOT a simulator. If you want a bit more detailed criticism, read on. Let's start with the most important aspect, the gameplay. The gameplay is near perfect. It will NEVER not be fun to fly, and it will also probably never not be fun to fly while also shooting machine guns and missiles at targets. This is what the game is all about, and it nails it. However, the game comes with a number of gameplay-related frustrations. Mostly in terms of gimmicky mechanics for specific levels, and enemy A.I. that just blatantly cheats. The game emphasizes weather effects and clouds for it's mechanics, and while this would be very immersive in theory, it is more often annoying than anything else. Level 7 and 8 frankly just suck because of weather mechanics. Level 7 in particular has "lightning strikes" which hit the player at certain times in the mission and cause you to lose control of the plane for a couple seconds. They are practically unavoidable, and instead of causing tension, they're just infuriating. Not to mention a bit immersion-breaking. Enemy A.I. is also frustrating at times. There are many drone-type enemies in the game, and when those perform an impossible maneuver it's somewhat understandable, but when a supposedly human-controlled plane slows down at an impossible rate which causes your own craft to stall, it can be pretty rage-inducing. Also, it's worth saying that this game is about as realistic as a marvel movie. This is not a criticism per se because the game is over-the-top fun, but it's worth saying since many (including the game's own marketing), compare this game to flight sims. It is not a flight sim. Graphics are beautiful, and while the game has few options, it seems to be optimized well and has run perfectly on 2 different machines that I have played it on, one old and one very advanced. If you are hoping to play this game on a flightstick/HOTAS, be relieved that it probably will work. The unfortunate truth is that the game is only compatible with a specific brand of stick out of the box, however all it takes is a simple file edit to get another input device to work. Basically tricking the game into thinking your stick is a type of pad. Steam inputs may also work but I have not tried that method myself. I personally used the 'Logitech extreme 3D pro', a cheap and common stick, and it worked just fine with a file I was able to find in the community guides, you can even edit the buttons yourself. I don't want to say much about the story, smarter people than I have already said it. It's ok, but not good. To it's credit the game has mostly good voice acting, and there is even a TINY bit of character development. But I have to be honest, it's melodramatic tom clancy shlock with predictable story beats and mediocre writing. It shouldn't be the reason you are considering buying this game anyway. I do have to say though that the music is amazing, and kinda makes up for the poor dialogue in terms of immersion. It's a bit overdramatic at times, but when the theme is swelling and you feel in control of your plane, it's a great feeling. I hope this review helps, admittedly I just needed to get a couple things off my chest as well. Enjoy, and keep watching the skies.
It's not Ace Combat Zero but still awesome, lots of fun and stuff to unlock.
Physics are optional. So is paying attention to the giant blinking red bar and the voice screaming "missile" at you. 10/10 would get hit by a SAM again
Borderline pay-to-win crap with a lot of cut corners. Do you want to edit .ini files to get your flight stick working? This game is for you. Do you want to not be able to calibrate said flight stick properly? This game is for you. Do you want to unlock the exact same aircraft with the same paintjob but now in A/J/S/X variant? This game is for you. Do you want to watch cutscenes with 2010 tier animation work that are padded out with stock footage? This game is for you. Do you want to be forced into air battles against aces that you can only beat by using overpowered planes from a DLC? This game is for you. Do you want to use weapons that even though should be compatible with every NATO aircraft are shackled to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ planes in the game? Oh boy, this game is for you. Dude... Just buy Project Wingman. It is way better and costs a fraction of this piece of ♥♥♥♥.
Amazing game! Bought it on the day it came out, and finished the game. Kinda sad that I am now older and hence has difficult following the story whilst flying a fighter jet.
Overall, this is a good game I'd recommend. However, anyone who is considering playing this game with HOTAS (Logitech X-56 in my case) should know that it's not possible to configure your HOTAS controls in the in-game settings menu, and you have to go into the game files to set things up. I know this game was primarly made for controllers, but Project Wingman, an indie game made by a team of 3 people, managed to implement the ability to configure your controls, so I don't see why a big budget AAA game couldn't.
Really good game in my opinion, if you already expect it being arcade/unrealistic shooter. If you played games like DCS, War thunder (non arcade mode) or il2 sturmovik series then it is probably not for you. I do like the graphics of the game and I am surprised how smoothly it runs on my laptop, with it being instaled on external T7 ssd disk. Missions are fun, currently I passed first 8 missions, the only one that was really hard was mission 6, I tried playing with A10 or F16, but what worked for me was F14 equiped with 8 anti air missiles to shoot down more targets in less time. Story of the game is engaging, but a bit confusing due to having completely alternative universe/history of earth and made up states. Some people might dislike this with the fact that planes that would be enemies in our world can fly on the same side. I actually don´t mind this because you can choose whatever you want. I would rate this game solid 8/10, it runs smoothly, it is fun, but you need to keep up with the story and understand the lore of the game. I am not familiar with the rest of this series, last time I played ace combat was on psp when I was a little kid so it was even more confusing than now, but I think I will check the rest of this series. Also you can buy this game for about 10 euros on sale, and I do think for that price it is definitely worth it!
