Short yuri visual novel about finding treasure. Honestly, it's better than I expected. The story might not be the deepest but I had fun reading it, the art isn't half bad either. I give props to the devs for including the h patch free of charge here on steam and the game not having any DLC achievements.
I'll try and gather my thoughts as this was a gift from a friend. Highway Blossoms is a bare-bones Western visual novel that wears its anime-inspired aesthetics on its sleeve. Developed outside Japan, it tries hard to capture that Sakura-game vibe with desert road trips, treasure hunting, and a yuri romance between two young women. It’s essentially a road-trip yuri story following Amber, a treasure-hunting granddaughter grieving her grandfather, and Marina, the random girl she picks up in the desert. I went in skeptical (thanks to a friend’s recommendation), and the game mostly confirmed my reservations. Presentation & Technical Side The art is noticeably inconsistent. Character models and CGs jump between different styles, which breaks immersion—especially in a short, linear story where the visuals should be one of the main draws. Character models and especially the CGs feel like they were handled by different artists with no strong unifying direction. Some scenes look decent, but the lack of cohesion hurts the overall polish. Backgrounds and locations do the job (they serve the story and that’s about it), but nothing particularly memorable. English voice acting is present, which is usually an instant turn-off for me in anime-style games. It’s… serviceable at times, but the mic quality is all over the place—quiet in some lines, clipping into static in others. It adds to the amateurish feel. Story, Pacing, and Characters This is a linear story with no choices or branching paths — just a straight narrative. And that’s where it falters. The dialogue often feels dragged out, with conversations stretching far longer than they need to.The biggest issues for me were the characters and their believability. Amber and Marina are both under 20, yet they navigate the American Southwest, treasure hunting, and life decisions with a level of independence and competence that feels unrealistic. Amber in particular is deeply inconsistent. She is a mess of conflicting traits. One minute she’s this guarded, independent, grieving granddaughter who lost her grandfather and has family baggage. The next she’s overly trusting of a random girl she meets in the desert, gloating about treasure, using fake names, and somehow having had multiple girlfriends despite seeming socially isolated. The game never sells any of it convincingly. Marina feels even thinner—like she mainly exists to be the other half of the yuri pairing. It never quite gels. The romance between Amber and Marina also left me confused. The game tells us a lot about Amber’s love for her grandfather and her parental issues, but the relationship progression feels rushed after the first kiss. There’s very little internal doubt or processing time — it jumps quickly to awkward acceptance and then full steam ahead. The first kiss itself was underwhelming, with weak buildup and payoff. After the first R18 scene, Amber suddenly spirals into doubt and has a massive emotional outburst… which then gets resolved basically overnight with almost no real processing. The game tells us they care deeply about each other but barely shows the internal doubt, awkwardness, or tension you’d expect. It goes from “first kiss” to “awkward acceptance and then they’re hitting it off” with almost no meaningful development in between. Later dialogue during the second R18 scene is straight-up cringe. Side characters are mostly functional for the plot. One bright spot is Mariah — I found myself agreeing with her blunt assessment of Amber more than once. Amber is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Setting and Tone The game name-drops real-world locations, but the world-building never feels grounded. The extreme open-mindedness of side characters toward the lesbian romance feels jarring when contrasted with the more conservative-leaning areas the story travels through. It breaks immersion for a story that otherwise tries to sell a somewhat realistic road-trip vibe. Final Verdict Highway Blossoms is a (too) short, straightforward yuri road-trip story that might appeal to fans looking for low-stakes sapphic fluff with some treasure-hunting flavor. But for me, the inconsistent characters, rushed romance, dragged conversations, technical hiccups, and lack of meaningful choices or believable development make it feel underdeveloped. It’s the kind of game where you can see the outline of something decent, but the execution doesn’t deliver on its promises. Score: 3/10 — Looks and sounds rough, characters don’t add up, and the emotional payoffs fall flat. It's certainly a read. You can do a lot worse with a story like this.

Good visual novel, might have an unexpected effect making you want to own an motorhome after reading it. 10/10
For the majority of its runtime its a somewhat fun if middling road trip story, albeit with its fair share of questionable moments surrounding the protagonists behaviour and many contrived / cringeworthy plot points. After a certain point I felt that the story was starting to go in a good direction and that maybe I could actively enjoy the remainder despite my issues with the prior acts, however very soon after this the narrative just takes a complete nosedive as all the character's worst tendencies are greatly exaggerated out of nowhere for the sake of hollow drama. I have previously enjoyed stories featuring incredibly toxic relationships before, but the way that the text treats the conflict within really makes me question how aware the writers were of how callous and outright abusive the actions taken by the characters (particularly Amber) are. The scene where Amber just hurls verbal abuse at marina as she repeatedly tries to calm the situation being immediately followed by Amber making a major decision that completely disregards Marina's autonomy is quite hard to sit through and she is near immediately completely forgiven for it despite her continuing to infantilise and lie to Marina!
