The difficulty will vary depending on how you limit yourself in using a character's skill, which will affect a certain part of the game. Pros: - Unique combat system that relies on equipment rather than stat - Unique boss fights - Touch-based encounters Cons: - Endings are too similar - The limitation for a certain mechanic prevent you from exploring everything that the game has to offer - Sometimes you can't select a target whenever you are in a battle Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you like to play RPG Maker games that are focused on combat, buy this game.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
The game might look similar to other RPG Maker games because of the default, RTP assets, although it also uses some customized assets in it. The most apparent one is in the portraits that are replaced with anime-styled characters. Speaking of customization, the battle screen is also neat and clean-looking. It shows everything that you need while removing the excess boxes that are commonly seen in other RPG Maker games. The dev also nailed a good job on the mappings. Areas don't look too vast nor small with a lot of variations in them. I never got bored walking around the area despite me traveling through the same themed map for a long time.
Story
This might come as a surprise for a game that boasts of multiple endings, but there isn't much to be told about the story. Interactions are only limited to small talk between either NPCs or the main characters whenever they are resting for the night. Emoticons become the most used method to express characters' feelings, letting you figure out what happened to the story on your own. It makes the story unique, although this also makes the story to be lacking in depth as a result. Endings are too similar. The dev claimed that there are 4 endings, and while I only managed to find 2 throughout my playthrough, the only difference between both of them is on the final boss mechanic. There might be slight alterations of the dialogues in the epilogue, but they look so forced to make them different. It's not worth it to play the game again just for the other endings.
The Game
Gameplay The game is focused on exploring the area and beating bosses that are blocking your way. The lack of dialogue helps to shift the game's focus to exploration and combat, and it does a good job at it. A lot of secrets are hidden beneath the area, forcing you to explore every corner of the map to find them. They usually reward you with some items, whether it's a weapon or a skill book, which help in combat. The skill usage limitation on one of the characters might hinder you from experiencing everything the game has to offer. There is one character that contributes to one achievement, which is affected by how many MP was used to cast a skill. This limits the said character from overusing her skill, forcing a magic-type character to use a physical attack instead. While it still works to some extent due to the stat distribution, some parts of the exploration require you to use this character's skill to reach a secret area and hints for boss fights. It seems as if the dev doesn't want people to get this achievement at their first playthrough despite having nothing new to offer for another playthrough. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2641779004 There is a mechanic called darkness affinity that contribute to a certain aspect on the game, but the game never explains about it, especially on how to increase it. I only realized that my run was screwed since I already used a lot of MP outside battle for exploration purposes after doing some testing, and there is no way I would pay attention to it if not for the achievement description. The thing is, there isn't any difference in the game's content to justify another playthrough, and achievement hunters are bound to aim for the best ending at their first playthrough as a result. Moreover, certain parts of the game might change if you have a lower affinity throughout the game, which I failed to do as well. Combat Combat is what the game excels at. First of all, the game has touch encounters with a 100% escape chance. This might not sound important at first, but since the game encourages you not to use skills if needed, it is important to reach the healing point as often as possible. Luckily, healing points are abundant. This changes the exploration part into running away from all enemies that you find to reach the next healing point. To be honest, battles are kinda slow, so I'm glad that I could just ditch them all without feeling guilty about it. In battle, gears are more important than stats. Different weapons give different skills that you can use, forcing you to alternate between them to finish the fight quickly. Switching between several weapons in battle is a common thing to do if you want to maximize your damage, although you need to wait for some turns before you can switch it again. Moreover, some enemies can only be hit by a certain type of damage, giving another reason to switch your weapon as you fight. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2641778558 Bosses have unique mechanics. The variations give a reason to use a certain weapon in battle, although you might need to fight it several times before you know what to do. It was fun figuring out how the enemies are doing and formulating a strategy to beat them. Moreover, the MP usage limitation gives more challenges to the fight. I always try to refight the bosses to find out if I could defeat it with less MP. Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 9.6h. I replayed the game from the beginning after playing it for 3.1h since I thought that I couldn't get a good ending from that save. The rest of my playtime was spent checking the other endings and looking for the rest of the achievements. The game's difficulty depends on how much MP are you willing to spend. Bosses are quite easy to beat if you just want to spam skills, although there might be a limitation in the character's maximum MP - the base MP is very low, and upgrading the MP pool will prevent you from getting the good ending. I even had to retry some bosses several times after my party got wiped and sometimes, I even had to rely on luck to beat them without using too much MP. However, bosses become very easy to beat once you know what to do and are willing to spend MP. Problems Sometimes, the game won't allow me to select a target in battle after I alt-tabbed it.
Conclusion
The only thing that I remember from playing Journey On is its combat. Combat is solid with the weapon switching mechanic, giving a unique feeling to each fight. A harder enemy in this game doesn't mean a tougher and bulkier enemy. Heck, you don't even need to grind to defeat the bosses at all. The limitation from getting one achievement might be annoying since you need to limit yourself from using the skills that you can use, but the game is fairly easy in general. At the end of the day, Journey On still proves to be a satisfying experience and I could recommend it to those who like RPG Maker games that are focused on combat. As beta tester and bug squasher, I love the story of the 2 sisters. Maps could have improvements, and are a bit rough, but the story is nice and a nice adventure to compleet. As a Hardcore gamer, battles require a bit of thinking of best approach, but is fairly nice balanced. Some bosses or enemies are harder, but that depends on the weapon you carry for the battle or swap in between, so think ahead before making a move and you can beat most battles easely. I only did some darkness path and the cutscenes on the sanctuary is really nicely done, if you want to dive deeper into the story and makes you stronger as well. Taking the light path is the hard way so think twice. Enjoy the story of the 2 sisters and help them on their adventure to defeat the evil. Are you able to save your sister from turning pure corrupted?
If you're looking for a classic JRPG adventure with fun & challenging gameplay, this game is definitely worth trying. Combat is traditional turn-based style, with the ability to switch weapons and armor mid-battle (which will prove to be crucial in some fights), a gimmick that I really liked. Boss battles are unique and well-thought out. Some fights were really thrilling & beating them felt satisfying! Exploration is rewarded with very relevant weapons & armor, as well as tips against tough enemies. There are some funny NPC interactions as well. The story is simple (given the scale of the game, keep in mind though that multiple endings exist) yet enjoyable, and was interesting enough to make me look for different bonfire cutscenes. tl;dr This game is a nice throwback to traditional fantasy JRPGs. Its strongest point IMO is the combat, which is pretty engaging. I definitely had fun beating every boss.
I was a beta tester for this game. Journey On is a classic jrpg that isn't afraid to embrace everything the genre has to offer but also add its own touch on it. Going through the entire game was a pleasure, especially having choices that affected both the story and how you actually played the game; this is something I wish more games did. Combat is turn based with a heavy focus on picking the right equipment load out(which you can change in battle but with a cool down on that option after you do), picking the right abilities and spells, and getting an idea for what works for each boss or mini boss. Some of the normal monsters will require that you change the tactics and weapons you employ, some fights won't allow you to just spam the attack option and expect a win. The story's main draw to me was the idea of the choices you make actually mattering as I have mentioned before. I won't spoil much but if you go for a certain path don't expect things to be easy. There are a lot of small touches during the story, and exploration just make you feel the passion put behind this game. These things and all I described above made the journey truly worth it.
Story
Selena and Shirley must journey to the fallen Kingdom of Askhar to defeat the source of the Darkness, or demons will eventually become too much for their village to handle. While Selena can receive blessings from the Goddess of Light, Shirley is a practitioner of dark magic and is disallowed from entering holy places. However, she can increase her powers by corrupting in soul in the Dark Sanctuary, a place that functions as a sort of shared spiritual world for all dark magic users. The game is touted as having moral choices and soul corruption, but I found this to be very weak in comparison to games with similar plots. For one thing, the protagonists are silent, so it's very difficult to tell how the soul corruption affects Shirley's personality or her interactions with Selena. Additionally, there aren't that many opportunities to make moral choices, at least for mandatory events, though this may be due to the story's short length. The are two major moral choices concerning brainwashing and ironically enough, obtaining the final light power up. The game has multiple endings depending on Shirley's corruption and a certain side path right before the final boss. Unsurprisingly, the ending is happier if Shirley isn't corrupted, but the no corruption and partial corruption paths only differ in small ways, which made the morality system feel underutilized. The full corruption route can branch in an interesting way that makes the player question if their choices were worth it and there is an interesting twist for the light power up.
Gameplay
The game features a standard turn-based system, but bosses are heavily evented so that there's a puzzle aspect to their fight. While their gimmicks are fair and victory is fairly reproduceable once the player figures them out, it can take a bit of trial-and-error to realize what is going on in the first place. My least favorite boss is the Corrupted Assassin, since his gimmick has more of a luck factor compared to most other bosses. That may explain why there's a secret way to skip his fight. Selena has no MP or magic, but she can learn physical skills that have their own cooldowns. While this made resource management simpler with her, I feel that her accuracy isn't high enough to make up for the cooldowns, especially for life-saving skills like Shield Bash. It's entirely possible to see an enemy charge a strong attack, use Shield Bash in an attempt to stun them, miss, and eat a ton of damage. Shirley seems like a standard mage at first and her kit covers all offensive and support needs, but she has no MP growth, which means the player will have to use her MP carefully. Soul corruption can increase her max MP and give her more perks, which means the party doesn't have to spend as many turns using MP items, giving them better turn economy for difficult bosses. Most enemy attacks are survivable and fair, so it's entirely possible to cheese even the no corruption route with a big bag of consumables. However, the 2100 Darkness Affinity achievement can make the resource management aspect of the game much harder. DA is accumulated for every point of MP spent by Shirley, which means to get the achievement, the player must minimize their MP usage. This can also make it more tedious to grind for resources, though the middle section of the game does mercifully have physical-vulnerable mobs that drop Toka Grass and Soul Essence. There are occasionally campsites that the player can visit to cook healing food items and rest. Cooking requires ingredients, and only Toka Salad is infinitely farmable if you're a hoarder. Resting requires one party member to stand guard while the other one sleeps. The guard has a chance of having to fight an enemy, though I have yet to get into a situation where the enemy can be immune to one of the party members' attacks, so it seems to be balanced. If Shirley is the one who sleeps, she can visit the Dark Sanctuary, and the closer the party is to the final boss, the more corruption Shirley can gain, though it does require DA thresholds.
Verdict
7/10 The gameplay is balanced enough that it's possible to beat the no corruption route even with sloppy gameplay, albeit with trial-and-error for some bosses. The story and morality system are lacking, but there are some interesting plot elements that could be made better if the protagonists had properly written dialogue, enough that it could have bumped the game to 7.5/10 or 8/10.
This is a fun but short little adventure. Pros: +Some boss fights are challenging but fun to beat. +This game is more fast paced than most turn-based JRPG. +Charming style. Cons: -Not a lot of dialogues, simple story and silent protagonists. -Short -Minor technical issues. Such as stuttering or mouse target selection overriding keyboard.
I'm not a native English speaker, forgive my bad English. Is worthwhile playing. The boss battles are kinda hard for me, especially in the light path, but is acceptable for me. It needs tactics. The story is nice, and the bgms for maps are chosen wisely. It will be better if several languages support can be added. Here are some personal thought in improvement: ·The control of riding boat is kinda uncomfortable[strike],or I'm just too weak to play[/strike].
This game presents itself as Story that has many different paths that the reader can choose. The story is amazing and the fact that u can learn things that happened in the past with dark magic is mind-blowing. This game may not present itself the best graphically, but the mechanics and the lore has definitely did it justice. Each story unfold is worth the adventure and the relationship between Selena and Shirley has created a longing for more! The Light vs Dark Path has pretty much gave me the notion of whats going to happen in the future among the girls. Battles were strategic and giving the game has much rtp, the developer has done it right!
A fun, challenging rpg, though may have to play again to get the good ending, even though i resisted the darkness at every rest stage. Highly recommend.
Battles are as hard as rpg "Luka's adventure".
