Reviewing Journey is like trying to describe a scent in a memory using algebra, so I won't even try. I'll review the companions I met instead, the kind souls who made some steps with me, learned and taught, played with little noise patterns and stayed in awe, with me, looking at the scenery. Guys, you're a 10/10. As is this game. No words, just awe. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3750441800
Didnt realize until the very last level of this game that the "NPCs" I was playing with was actually players online. I was like "wow interesting choice to have NPCs that solve the puzzles for you sometimes and other times be complete dogwater". Beautiful game though- I'll definitely replay it sometime
i can only imagine how people felt at the time of release with something so different, especially during the time where indie games were really starting to grow into experiences that could leave as much of an impact on people the same way AAA games did. you can tell the developers were very passionate about the atmosphere in the game, so many great cinematic camera positions. I didn't know about the seamless multiplayer aspect until i stopped playing originally. I do know that you're given a list of the names of people who you play with, but i didn't see it. It may be because i dropped the game only after like 30 minutes originally a few months ago because of distractions or am just blind. i only played during late hours so i only ran into one other person the entire time i played and it was near the very beginning so i was very curious as to who it was. been wanting to play this for like 13 years because i remember seeing the costumes in LittleBigPlanet as a kid.
I know others have had a really good experience with this game, but that was not my experience with it. I think a lot of the game's whimsy and magic is based on encountering and playing with other people, but this is completely chance based. I didn't come across anyone when i played and so i just got to play hold forward for 2 hours. And don't get me wrong the environment is beautiful, but its not enough to make me enjoy doing p much nothing for 2 hours.
This game is so beautiful. I had 4 companions along the way, and I finished with one of them. Even the end scene had both of us. Honestly, one of my top 3 favorite games. The music, the visuals and the story have been chosen in the best way possible. Congrats to the team that created this masterpiece.
Journey Review
I was embarrassingly late to playing Journey, and I completely misunderstood one of its biggest ideas. Throughout my first playthrough, I assumed the companion I occasionally met was just an NPC there to help me through certain sections. It wasn't until I finished the game and looked through the achievements that I discovered those companions were actually other players. Wanting the achievement for completing the journey with the same companion, I asked a friend to help me. It took us quite a while to end up in the same lobby since matchmaking is completely random, but eventually we managed it. Playing through the entire journey alongside someone else felt completely different. The little moments suddenly meant so much more. Cutscenes and glyphs acknowledged both of us instead of just one traveler. During the freezing mountain sections we'd stop to recharge each other's scarf. We'd constantly "meow" at each other (I still have no idea what that sound is supposed to be called), and somehow ended up giving names to half the cloth creatures we encountered along the way. Looking back, I think I was playing Journey the wrong way the first time. The gameplay is simple, and the story is deliberately minimal, leaving much of it open to interpretation. Yet having another person quietly share that experience transformed it into something far more memorable. It's difficult to put into words, but by the end it genuinely feels like you've gone on an adventure together. The presentation has aged remarkably well too. The soundtrack is beautiful, the atmosphere is peaceful, and there are several moments that feel like they're straight out of a cinematic despite remaining fully interactive. Earning the white robe ended up feeling surprisingly rewarding, and I like the idea that one day I might come back not to replay it for myself, but to quietly help another traveler reach the mountain. The name Journey couldn't have been more fitting. It was never just about where I was going; it was about sharing it with someone else.
if you already played sky, then journey is not worth buying. i have played sky before journey and you can tell that skys plot was heavily inspired by journey with just REALLY small differences here and there. journey is like sky without in game purchases.
Please take advantage of the sale and try this gem... I understand now why I heard so much good about it. A very intriguing, moving, honestly spiritual experience. And it's nice to meet a fellow player along the way to support each other thru the journey :)
beautiful game and definitely 2 hours well spent! The only real downside to the game is that without having other people around, it really does feel like a 'press forward' sim and the game gets dull quickly. overall I'd give it a 6/10 or even a 7/10 for the stunning visual style that really sets it apart from other games. The lack of gameplay mechanics and interesting choices to make really brings down the score.
