It’s 1926 and there’s no place on Earth like New York City. You left the small town you grew up in to seek fame, fortune, and romance on Broadway, but success and true love have both proven more elusive than you imagined.

When Choice of Games first announced launch of the new series, Heart's Choice, I met the news enthusiastically to say the least. I have always loved the romance focus in their games, and if it is mixed with great storytelling and a vivid world, then oh my glob! So I will just say it straight: my expectation for Heart's Choice were very high – after all, this series claims that “Heart’s Choice label puts romance at the center of the story, and you at the center of the romance”. Sweet, right? Unfortunately, this became my ultimate downfall. Why? Well, you see…
Pros
Jazz Age is by no means a terrible game and it definitely shines in some aspects. To begin with, the atmosphere and the setting. Both were described beautifully! New York of the 1920s is a beautiful and alluring place where all your dreams come true. If you are ready to suffer, bleed and sweat to achieve them, of course. The city was described in a very charming manner – it has both a very dark side and the one full of dazzling light. Clubs, hotels, theaters, even the railway station, all of them have something unique and stylish. New York is also the city of fashion and dashing beauties of all genders. The author, Nicola R. White, was able to describe clothes of that period really well. Lila was particularly impressive. Second, I would really like to mention characters. I remember most of them quite vividly even several days after I completed the game, which proves that their personalities felt realistic and were interesting enough to remember. Both John and Lila are also interesting choices for romantic paths, but I have not read their love triangle route yet, so cannot say much about it. Toni was a real charmer with her bubbly personality and outgoing attitude to life. Fern, the little sister of our protagonist, was more annoying than anything, to be honest. But at least she is sincere, I guess? There is also one technical issue connected with her, but I will talk about it later. Well, sadly, these are all features I have to complement. Now we are getting to the cons part. And boy are they disappointing as heck!
Cons
While it was quite easy to read the whole text and there were no mistakes or typos, I still cannot really praise both writing and story without complaining. The main issue is that the plot does not feel complete. No, it has a proper ending, even an epilogue. However, I could not shake the feeling that either half of the story was removed or it was simply missing. Specifically, transitions between the events – they were literally non-existent. For the most part, there were just a few words at the beginning of the scene like “your character did this and a bit of this”, and that is it. This also affected interactions between characters, as they were limited to the present moment only. What does it mean? That apart from meetings within the main plot line, there is hardly anything else of substance. Why do we fall in love with John? Just because he told us a sob story about himself at the very beginning? Or because he loves blue color? The protagonist will meet him two or free times at best before falling in love madly and singing serenades on stage. The same goes for Lila – yes, there is some attraction from the very beginning as our character is impressed with this woman’s fashion and personality. But, once again, why do we even love each other?! Just because it is convenient for the plot? And for God’s sake, my character was able to kiss her just about one hour after they met! This is awkward. To sum up, there were just not enough special moments between my character and her love interests to make me believe in their undying feelings for each other. The same goes for most side characters and even family members. Another strange thing is that you have all three romantic options open all the time. I never showed any interest in John while on Lila’s route and had just 55 points of relationship with him, but he still confessed his love to the protagonist in the end. And I was able to choose between him, Lila and the love triangle – even though I did not do anything to promote two of these options. Also, both romance routes were exactly the same, just with different dialogues. So none of them felt really unique and special. This brings me to the conclusion that the story was also rushed – which explains the feeling that something is missing. We jump from scene to scene on some mad ride that takes place within one month, as far as I understood; one moment you have just failed your audition and moved to Lila’s place, and the other – you are already in the theater trying to impress a famous director. The beginning of Jazz Age had a very nice pace and introduced characters and places perfectly. However, after it everything started to speed up too much. The ending came too fast and felt abrupt and dissatisfying. Speaking of the one and only adult scene in the game, I should confess that it made me more uncomfortable than anything else. Compared to Heart of the House, where sex scenes were described in the elegant style of Angelica - Marquesa de Los Angeles with its subtle yet quite revealing manner, the one in Jazz Age feels crude and unappealing – in John’s case more than in Lila’s. Maybe it is just the problem of my own taste, maybe I am being too harsh, but I just could not find any good points about it. For me, there is a huge difference between novel-style writing with gentle interactions and lots of artistic descriptions and a smut book where sex is added just to attract bored housewives. And the last small point: Fern’s surname in the Stats page is always Irving, no matter what your character’s full name is. In the text itself Fern gets your surname, though.
Summary
Jazz Age has an amazing wrapping – like a shimmering golden liquid shining brightly under the night sky of New York. And when you see such beauty, you cannot but expect something absolutely delicious inside. Swiss chocolate with a hearty sprinkle of hazelnut mousse and maybe even bits of actual hazelnut. But when you finally open this lovely treat, you just get a bland mint fruit drop. Well, it is sweet and tastes not that badly, but it is definitely not what you were hoping for. It really pains me to give Jazz Age a negative mark, but its shortcomings outweighed all positive aspects, sadly. I did not find what I was hoping for – an endearing and maybe spicy love novel full of meaningful interactions and a rich story. If this game was longer and had more content, it would be way better and really worth a positive review. As of now, it feels shallow and rushed. I've played a number of CYOA games and this one was not it. It's short, clunky, and it doesn't feel like a well written story. It feels like a decent first draft/outline, but it's lacking in many aspects. I feel bad being so harsh but after playing other games where I enjoyed the stats, writing, and/or romance, this one didn't check any of the three. Try it out if this is THE genre you're interested in, but if this is just a passing curiosity then I recommend you keep on looking. Stats: Didn't feel relevant to the game. I'm sure they are, and this is honestly the least of my concern since I personally would rather not worry about my stats being high enough to beat a stat check. The problem was, it didn't feel like any of them were really reflected throughout my play through. Writing: The plot was too fast paced for my liking. So many things happened at once and it didn't feel like it was intentional. It feels like something rushed that someone would later on be like 'huh? oh yeah! I did that on purpose yeah!' when asked. It didn't feel like my character was overwhelmed, it felt like /I/ was. The characters aren't memorable besides how annoying the little sister is. And there's no/very little bonding happening between anyone so it feels like I have no loyalties. Romance: The character genders are preset and there is only two R/Os. The two characters are on vastly different sides and even though I'm bi it felt weird being stuck with one option if you were straight. And again, the are on very two different teams so your views/stances might not match up with the gender you want to romance. Everything feels like when you pluck up two things and smoosh them together to kiss. THIS is what disappointed me since it was advertised as a Heart's Choice game, the romance oriented side of Choice Of Games. All in all, I was personally VERY disappointed. If you want to try it out and see for yourself, go right ahead. And if you like it more than I did then that's great! But this was definitely not for me, and I hope the reasons I listed helps anyone that has similar criteria.
I was stoked when I read the story of the game since I love history, however I did find it personally very uncomfertable that it contains very detailed described sexual scenes of which there is not a single warning of on the store page. One of the choices you make is literally about a sexual action and it was very distastefull to read, it felt like I was reading one of those smutty novels which housewives buy at the grocery store. This game is not for me sorry. Big bummer since I liked the historical theme. I really would have liked a heads up at least, I don't mind brief mention of sexual themes but this was honestly very distasteful to read and felt like I was reading a badly written fanfic.
So, this has five characters. Two of the characters are great! (Toni & Vilma). Then three are terrible! There's the creep theater director, the cop who breaks into your apartment to sexually harass you, and the landlord. The stalker cop (ACAB) and the landlord are the are the only ROs! And you don't even have an option in most cases to be like "Nah I hate them I'm gonna just stay single and keep away from them," and in fact you have zero choice about ending up with at least one of those pieces of ♥♥♥♥. For the character of John, his behavior is so egregiously awful that the game really ought to come with a trigger warning for victims of stalking and sexual harassment.
I personally really enjoyed Jazz Age! Although it may be a bit shorter than other games like it, I found the story very compelling and I loved the characters! Toni was great but John was my favourite!! I definitely can't wait to play it again and again!
I love history and Choices of Games so of course I was going to play this game. Its a text only game but it's so well written that in my opinion you don't need visuals. there are only 2 love interests though 1 boy and 1 girl both are excellent characters and the romances are great fun. you can become the leading role in a new show, support actors rights to unionise, play your love interests against each other and even help save a speakeasy its great fun and your MC in the tradition of Choices of Games there are plenty of options to design a unique MC. I love this game I would say that it's quite a short game, it has no audio, and is text only if that's not your thing { I listen to jazz whilst playing it sometimes )
The ending was incredibly abrupt. It felt like the story was just getting started when the curtains closed. I'd understand if this was part 1 and part 2-5 came out later. But as it is, I'm disappointed. The characters were well-written. They felt like different people. Yet they didn't feel real based on how they interacted with the main character. Scenes felt alive in the first half, but later they weren't very well described. It felt like the second half was rushed. The UI was nice for the price point. I enjoyed reading through what little was available and making decisions which often felt impactful. Bethesda could learn a lot from this game. Character creation was decent. Not incredible, but good enough for the theater of the mind. I'm left wanting for more. I might buy another game, but one with better reviews than this one.
“Jazz Age” is a stylish, atmospheric romance set in 1920s New York, but it’s also a very short experience, and that brevity affects almost every part of the story. (6/10) The inclusivity is welcome and you can pursue any romance regardless of gender, but it doesn’t always mesh naturally with the historical setting the game aims to evoke. The tone is far more tolerant than the era realistically suggests, which can create some dissonance between premise and execution. Because the story moves so quickly, the romances develop at a rushed pace. You can end up kissing someone you supposedly “love” before the narrative has really given you time to get to know them. The game also ends quite abruptly, and many players, myself included, were left with the feeling that the story didn’t quite reach a satisfying conclusion. It reads more like the first half of a longer tale than a complete arc. Despite these issues, the writing has charm, the characters are interesting to get to know, and the setting is fun to inhabit for the short time it lasts. Just be aware that this is a brief, lightly sketched romance rather than a fully developed journey. (6/10)
Super fun and interesting! I love the ideas that occur in the story and I also just love anything set in the 1920's era!
