About
Island Off Outer Darkness follows the narrative of the Postman, a resident Postal Worker new to a small fishing village in Antarctic waters off the coast of a volcano (the titular Outer Darkness). They start new to the job, and must deliver packages to residents day-by-day, week-by-week. As they learn more about the island and its townsfolk, aberrations in space begin to appear. More broadly, Island Off Outer Darkness is an exploration of the grief of community collapse and personal withering. Featuring a 31-track OST by CalamityRhapsody and visual artistic work by several people, Island Off Outer Darkness is the story of this town, and these people.

Live out the life of a kind of antisocial government employee in an alien place.
Act out thrilling strand-type delivery simulator gameplay.
Chat with townsfolk in a menuing and dialogue system inspired by classic RPGs.
Go green with the gardening and hybridizing of over 15 otherworldly crops.
Chum fast by fishing in the ocean, with over 60 reelable fish, plants, and rocks.
Keep your ears peeled for a 31-track OST composed by the artist CalamityRhapsody.
Experience an unfolding story full of intrigue... and mystery.
Discover the world of Kolob, via its effects on the isolated fishing village.

Pluripotent Fester, a former freedom fighter and political writer for the liberation of Argyre for Pluripotentkind. Depressive, and in exile.
Brucehilda, a grandaunt, plumber, and resident of the island for over 60 years. And a doppelgänger, of her "twin sister".
The Postman, a gender-nonspecific mid-twenties youth from the mainland, new to their Postmanly job on the island.
Leonargo, a scholarly sea people from the depths, fished up and localized a few years before Island Off Outer Darkness takes place.
Aleks, an awkward farmer on the desolate rock and lover of his devoted partner Bucephalus.
Bucephalus, Aleks' partner-turned-horse who has a love for botany and the culinary arts.
And many more!

What a game. For some reason I really like games where you can be a little guy with a little job, so I was instantly hooked, but it's also strange and atmospheric in a way I loved, and it's intentionally full of friction in a way I find really delicious in games. Like, the walking is too slow, and some of the characters never ever warm up to you. It's probably not for everyone but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ was for me. And the soundtrack is gorgeous. I did think the game was ending when the Postman leaves Rekkieg for wetter winter(?) (this world has very confusing seasons) (< complimentary) and I got really sad, but don't worry, there's quite a bit more. I'm guessing I'm the outlier in taking 22 hours to play the entire thing but I just really loved hanging out in this world.
Truly fantastic postman game. Love delivering packages to freaks
A slow burn game, but very good narrative and ambiance. I think it deserves more attention. Interesting characters who all have opinions about each other and the world that builds a lot of depth.
I'm only around halfway through, but Island Off Outer Darkness is a really special game that I'm sad hasn't had more attention. Highly original, extremely imaginative, and absolutely gorgeous music. The setting is so intriguing and full of exciting ideas, and the characters are incredibly well-written. It's games like this that make you hopeful for the future of the medium! Wowee!!!
This is what video games are supposed to be
An incredibly overlooked gem! So glad that I heard about it.
Postman life on an isolated island in the far south neighboring outer darkness, delivering mail day by day to lots of variably cagey people, some more unpleasant than others. everyone feels very grounded and real and eventually has a lot to say, the detail of the world and how its is conveyed to you is very clever. fun little minigames. overall great writing, decent music, clever use of its limited visual style. I enjoy a lot of things inspiring this (as listed in-game) and I can see how they come through but this is still very much doing something unique and doing it well.
A very special experience. The combination of the unique setting, engaging characters and writing, and evocative atmosphere and music made for a game I played obsessively until completion. It's slow, more akin to a visual novel than a full on game minus some platforming sections. For the right person though, this will be magic. Highly highly recommended.
Picked this up after hearing about it on Side Story podcast - writing on point and vibes immaculate, if you like Disco Elysium or what bookshops call 'weird fiction' you'll probably get a kick out of this. I'm only early into the game but can tell it's got legs and is (slowly) going somewhere interesting - even if I'm wrong I've easy had £10 worth of entertainment out of it already and I haven't even met the lobster guy yet. Bucephalus Horse armour DLC when?
