Design computational circuits which defy restrictions of our universe in this open-ended puzzle. Your completed creations become components to solve future challenges. As you design a circuit and can place your design within it, where there is a smaller you doing the same, and so on to infinity.
Infinite Turtles is a really cool programming puzzle game. It uses grids and reusable components, like the developer's previous game ComPressure, and it focuses on processing lists of tokens, like TIS-100. But there is a big focus on recursion: the result feels more like writing functional programs instead of imperative programs. And getting to the point where you can add 1 + 1 to make 2 with your components feels like accomplishing a mathematical proof. You can copy components from other players, so there is good freedom to focus on the most interesting parts first.
Coming from ComPressure, this is generally an even better game in my opinion. The steam mechanic was quite interesting and unique but it was harder to fully understand and some designs could be too slow to respond for un-intuitive ways. Infinite Turtles has tokens that you directly control and test expect the given tokens.. just whenever, as long as they're in the right order. It's still fun to go back to optimise previous design but it's not necessary for future ones to function. I also really like the recursivity orientation of this game. A lot of "programming" puzzle games focus on loops, recursivity is a rarer concept to see in these games. And as someone who was aware of the concept but never used it, it's very fun to figure out how these puzzles are supposed to work. On the other side, the UI in this game is still pretty mid. It's (iirc) exactly the same one as ComPressure, it works, all the tools you want are in the game but they're not really gonna be as intuitive to use or to find as in most other games. Also this game doesn't have much of a story, just a general sci-fi concept inspired by that one meme. Not a big deal, I do love that meme, but it feels like a little bit of a downgrade compare to ComPressure. Overall a very fun and hard game, but slightly easier than ComPressure. Also it requires a little bit of patience to learn the UI. EDIT: I think I've undersold how great the modularity of this game (and ComPressure) is. The way earlier levels are used as building blocks for greater and more complicated puzzles is so fun and rewarding. And without the "efficiency" quirk of ComPressure, it's really just a fun feature with no annoying downside.
Review: Infinite Turtles
Very neat
Fun
Don't be fooled by the small size and the graphics. The game is deep ^^ Information you need to know is disclosed at the time you need them. Puzzles start really easy, until you hit a string of harder ones. Luckily, if you take your time, it's doable. This game implement the idea of delay and throughput, things I had to battle in real life scenario in automation. The idea of a token taking a journey is a metaphor used in BPMN (notation used to describe business processes accurately). Even better, YOU make the component, so, if the delay is unbearable or the throughput very low, it's on you ^^
In order to understand recursion you must first understand recursion. However once that's done, you're set.
My uppie asked me to review the game. I'm outsourcing it to my downie. A fantastically simple concept, executed very well. With just a simple set of starting components, anything is possible!
