Reviews
I bought this on a whim after reading the few but nice reviews on Steam that said it wasn't what I expected and, indeed, I didn't expect it to be this...weird. I said 'weird' because there were other things I liked, such as the menu title (it's comparable to PS/Switch), the VA, the character sprites, the BGM, and so on. Even if the background is derived from a real photograph, it is OK as long as the plot is compelling. But the plot is quite dubious in my opinion. The world-building and concept are intriguing, but the story's flow is absurd. The events just...happened one after the other, with no explanation, link, or build-up at all. I ended up on the demon god's route without even realizing it; I assumed I was still in the prologue because how the story was still so linear at the time. If the romance is there, I cannot feel it because how poor and illogical the writing is. Sadly, my request for a refund is turned down since the playing time exceeds 2 hours. So here I am, writing this review, to give whoever reading this a different perspective to consider before buying it blindly. If you want to try it out, I suggest waiting for a sale or trying out the demo beforehand, because it's not worth it, the art may make it seem so, but the story is seriously just worth comparing with the Otome constantly released on Android/ios. *Demon god's route - Spoiler ahead* So, the first time we met, he claimed to have abducted me and insisted on marrying me because he liked me, and I felt like sunshine without ever meeting. Okay, I thought, maybe he'll explain more when he opens up to me. But no, he said the same thing even when I was nearing the end of his story. There's nothing wrong with that reason; it only feels wrong because there's no backup for it. We just met, and all of our exchanges along the way are the MC attempting to figure out his background in order to escape, and even when he does open up, it's as if we're performing a job interview instead of confiding in each other. And throughout that period, everything the MC feels (at least, that's what she thinks) is sympathy for him. If you choose not to kill him, she will suddenly declare "I love you," be willing to die for him, and abandon her former life to run away with him. Yay, what an empty happy ending, without solving or feeling anything, even the Koshimpuk has more personality than the main couple. *Final thoughts* I guess I'll just wait for Pewrep's route for the time being, as he has a history with the MC, and I'm hoping that their development will be better than the game imposing events and feelings on us like it did with the demon god's route.

What got me into the VN was the art - and most of the time i liked it a lot. Anyway, the good things are: - Voice Acting for the LI's - Interesting Story - Dictionary that makes sense - Most of the CG art looks super good! - I like the character designs - Some minor animation (like snow falling down; I like small stuff like this) - You can instantly switch the language to Japanese and back to English. Neutral: - The game is short (but it's also said so in the description - so no worries!) - Backgrounds are often just photographs Contra: - The CG Art of Huaisu's route is super different from any other CG art. A completely different style. It doesn't mean that the art is bad - but for a paid game, I hope for some consistency or at least mentioning it on the Steam page - Sometimes the music just feels like it's missing. I don't know if it was intended for some scenes or not. For me, it just felt a bit off. - One hidden Steam achievement has an insane recruitment
die 100 times
. It just makes the game longer than it is. Hence, I didn't go for it (I should have found most of them though). - I still didn't find out how to make the text invisible to stare more closely at the CG's besides using the art gallery (might be my fault). - I hated most of the endings (just my personal thing. I wanted more happy happy stuff but ehh considering these settings, it's understandable why they didn't do this) Anyway.. While I think that Yukar of the Abyss is an interesting VN, it sometimes feels a bit unpolished. The endings feel a bit lacking, and the plot is a bit messy. I'm still annoyed that the CG art was totally changed in one route. If you can overlook this parts and just want an interesting read with some Japanese VAs (only LI's) then sure, why not. Otherwise, I won't recommend this.

Pewrep
Moshirechik
Kyril

Yukar From The Abyss is a fantasy, otome visual novel developed and published by LocaGames. You take on the role of Kurumi Oki (whose name can be changed), a young woman from Tokyo who recently moved back to her hometown of Hokkaido after having been fired from her job. She's on a train, heading home. However, in her drunken state, Kurumi accidentally misses her stop, so after hastily paying the train conductor and getting off the train, she finds herself at an unknown, very remote place. As she walks around at night, the snow continues to fall and it continues to get colder. Soon, Kurumi finds herself in another unknown land, free from the snow and cold, and she sees some unfamiliar figures in costumes. One of these figures captures her and informs her that she's dead, but somehow, she arrived in the land of the gods rather than the human underworld. How will Kurumi get out of this situation? I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. As for the gameplay, there are plenty of choices presented throughout the story. Many choices lead to death endings. (There are even Steam achievements tied to the number of deaths for the MC.) There's the common route, of course, and depending on the choices made, there are one of four romance options that Kurumi can pursue: Pewrep (the Mountain God who takes on the form of a bear), Kyril (the CEO of a major trading company who seems to be human), Li Huaisu (the God of the Wetlands who takes on the form of a crane), or Moshirechik (the supposed Demon God). Each romance option has one of three endings, with the first ending being the happiest while the third ending being the most tragic. Also, after the first ending with a romance option is unlocked, his after story/epilogue can be read, available in the Scenario section on the Main Menu. (You can replay a guy's route or ending in the Scenario section as well). In addition, there are lots of CGs shown as well as a varied soundtrack and full-on Japanese voice acting for the romance options. A Dictionary section is presented as well to introduce the terminology of the Ainu language. As mentioned earlier, there are Steam achievements, too, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. As a fan of visual novels, I love ones that have a great story and some romance (although the latter isn't required for me, personally). Yukar From The Abyss delivers on both. I love how the story starts off, with Kurumi on a train late at night, only to find herself at a remote place and then later, in the land of the gods. Right away, I knew that this story would take on the fantasy, supernatural turn and that there was something special about Kurumi since it is extremely rare for humans (dead or alive) to end up in the land of the gods. With some help, Kurumi returns to the land of the living even though she later finds herself in situations where she ends up being dead again, only to come back alive. There is some mystery going on, and it's later revealed that
there are one or two beings pulling the strings that are dictating Kurumi's fate. Fortunately, though, Kurumi later has the ability to decide her own destiny
. In regards to the characters, Kurumi is pretty much a clean slate character. She doesn't have much of a personality, other than being kind and understanding, and she isn't always the smartest (especially if you force her to make stupid choices lol). However, I'd say that she's fine as a protagonist, and I like how she would adjust her actions and such, depending on the romance route. Speaking of the routes, the four options have varying personalities. Pewrep is the friendliest although perhaps not the most refined, while Li Huaisu is more cold and reserved (at first glance). Kyril is outgoing and friendly although it's suspected that he's hiding a secret, while Moshirechik initially comes off as intimidating (but he ends up having a past that you can't help feeling that he got wronged somehow). I like that there's varying personalities and that the routes vary. If I had to pick a least favorite route, though, I'd say that Li Huaisu's was my least favorite, simply because there isn't much romance. (Although I did enjoy his story route, there isn't even a kiss.) If I had to pick my most favorite, this is up in the air, but I'd probably pick Kyril's route. There's romance (yes, even kissing and cuddling CGs XD), and I really like how Kyril has very complicated reasons for his actions although
they end up being well-intentioned. Also, his relationships with humans are complicated, but unlike other gods, he doesn't seem to really hate or distance himself from them
. In addition, I feel like in his first ending, he and Kurumi get the happiest epilogue. In regards to the writing, I found it to be fairly well-paced. I noticed occasional issues in regards to missing punctuation as well as weirdly placed quotation marks. They might due to translation issues, but they don't distract from enjoying the overall story and routes. As for the art, I found it very beautiful. The backgrounds are well drawn, and the sprites are in the usual anime style. As for the CGs, they are lovely to gaze at although I should make a note of this. For the most part, the CG style is consistent except for the CGs for Li Huaisu. (I'm guessing that another artist was commissioned for those CGs.) This inconsistency might throw off some readers although I was fine with it. Regarding the music, the tracks are quite beautiful to listen to. There's variety, and I felt like they depict that feeling of being surrounded by the gods or being in a fantasy setting. Also, I like how there's Japanese voice acting for the four romance options although I wish that there had been voice acting for the other characters. However, there are a lot of NPCs, so I can see why that may not have been possible. Overall, would I recommend Yukar From The Abyss? If you enjoy otome visual novels, are looking for one in a fantasy setting and don't mind the more emphasis on story than romance, then this is worth taking a look. For the asking price, I'd say it's worth getting, as it took me over 15 hours to complete all of the routes and get all of the achievements. (To be fair, though, I had to grind a bit to get that 100 deaths achievement. :o) It has a beautiful soundtrack, voice acting, and lovely art that goes along with a great fantasy story. Finally, I want to give a major thanks to LocaGames for the review copy. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
1. Nice Art 2. Very good Voice Acting 3. Realistic Heroine 4. Nonstop action 5. 4 Routes 6. Some suggestive themes and CG's but not too much 7. Great writing/very brief and to the point You should buy this game it's fun but the heroes are intense. Other similar games: Dark Nights, Theory of Fear, Enchanted in the Moonlight, Kissed by the Baddest Bidder, Men of Yoshiwara, Men of Ohgiya, anything from Voltage 365, honestly I reccomend Misao, Mad Father, VGPerson Games, Kinder the RPGmaker games, Mogeko Castle.
I've finished the six released endings, the deaths, and the end stories, and I've loved every moment of this game. It's a really interesting look at Ainu myths, but it still feels familiar if you know anything about Shintoism. Of these two routes, I really loved Kyril's. I had expected to like his from the beginning (just a hunch), and he didn't disappoint me. I'm really looking forward to being able to play Li Huaisu's route in a few days. I don't think I'll love Pewrep's route (based on his character and my preferences), but I'm sure the story will be fully finished up in his route. The story is... well bloody when death is involved at all, but the good ends feel really good. While romance is involved, it's not what makes the game good. The story itself is interesting, and it makes me want to know what's happening and why. The romance portion moves super fast, and it feels like you're just suddenly in love with the LI. If you're looking for a super romantic otome, this isn't it. If you're looking for a fun interesting story based on myth, then it's for sure worth the money and time.
Whoo- that was certainly a trip. Yukar is definitely a visual novel BEFORE its an otome... now that's not to say there's no romance (I would say the most romantic routes were Moshirechik and Pewrep) but I wouldn't say the game is particularly focused on the romantic aspects. That said- I really did enjoy it. In a lot of ways you can tell that its a small indie company, but that just lends itself to making it more of an endearing game over all- you can tell there was passion behind the product and the end result is a very sweet story that delves into a category of Japanese mythology that rarely gets to be explored. There were a few bugs and mistakes here and there but nothing that detracted from my experience in any major way- Ultimately I would say that Yukar from The Abyss is a short but fascinating VN that is well worth its price-tag.
JUST PLAY IT !
Dear me... I don't think this book was for me... I will compliment you on the artwork and the backgrounds. Upa is adorable. Zooming into bear-ears is cute. But oh my... Is the MC dumb. Terminally dumb in fact. Not only that... She is overly naive, believes everyone is utterly good and can do no wrong, useless af, a simpleton, a people pleaser to a point where she will DIE if no one will stop her and nothing surprises her. A God reveals himself to her? She is like "oh okay". A certain situation occurs "Oh, it ain't real. Just a dream, so it's okay!" And let's not forget... "You want me to cut off his head? As in kill him?" Yes MC... That's what it literally means........................................... Also... Upa is just there to "dumb things down" for this MC and give her stuff she doesn't deserve. She was also given "something powerful"... Which she also doesn't deserve. Gods are fighting over her and her attention... And all for what? A piece of paper would be far more entertaining than this one! Was she ever useful? I guess. When the bird TOLD HER how to be useful. She needs someone else to think for her and to rescue her. BORING! USELESS! "I want to go back to my old life". She has no life. She nearly died bending over backwards for everything and everyone. If that's her "life", wow. Just wow. That... Aside... Can the Love Interests redeem it? Or at least the story? Moshirechik -> Moody af and with mommy issues. He has a reason for "liking her" and yet... It's psychologically incorrect. (I say this, because I worked with men that had a similar "event" happen to them and NONE of them responded in a way this character did. Nor would they.) That's what you're going to realize a lot about this novel: It's motives and reasoning are completely off. Like running up to someone in a fight and telling the opponent to "stop, because I am talking to him!" Are you kidding me? Are you FOR REAL?! Anyway, the owl-looking thing, Moshirechik. He does "something" to her and then she wails about it, before instantly changing her tune to liking him. Then she loves him afterwards. What the f ever. Weirdly enough... While unstable... He may have been the only "so-so" Love Interest. And THAT speaks volumes!!! Huaisu -> ... I don't even know. I don't like him. Like at all. He does favors for this bint (MC) and she instantly rejects when he asks for stuff. He has an agenda and is easily swayed "to the other side" by MC giving him an "item". Only for the MC to IMPOSE her WANTS on him, just so that she can "rub it into his face" in the future. (This is also the one route where she
bludgeons
a guy to near death, because Huaisu left. Very stable MC.) Kyril -> He is insane, so it all makes sense. He does a lot of "sheet" to her and when he is like "oh sorry for this and this" (WHICH CANNOT BE FORGIVEN EASILY!!!!!!!!!!) and she goes "nah, I forgive ya hehehehehehe!"...... What a great personality you got there MC. Freakin' A! Pewrep -> He has bear ears. Apart from that... He is good on other routes and uh... Overly
possessive
in his own route. Also, someone recommended a "2nd ending" of his as A "GOOD ENDING". Well that someone... Certainly has an
imprisonment
fetish. I wont go into anymore details. It's enough for me. If you LIKE the following: being abused by men (not physically) / really enjoy overly insipid/useless Main Heroines / or don't really value yourself and/or if anything goes? This might be up your alley! Honestly... If you are younger... Or if you just don't want to think and read something like this? I guess it's work too... But otherwise? Use your own judgement.
