I loved the demo. I was looking forward to this game, it was easily one of my most anticipated games of October. I've not been this disappointed in a long while. It's almost palpatable. Alright, a few things.. This is not what I'd consider a modern text adventure whatsoever. After the initial part of the game, what you saw in the demo, it is certainly anything but a modern text adventure. Yes you can list commands, but there aren't many that it actually understands. And then there were constant issues where the game no longer recorded my inputs and I had to leave to the main menu and come back. The game is about 35-40 minutes long at best, and honestly you could probably finish it a slight bit faster. While there are different endings, I can't even receive one ending because I just get this stupid black screen when I'm at the part of the game that is supposed to trigger the ending. I'm glad I won this on Twitter and didn't end up buying this, because I'm just incredibly disappointed with my experience.
예를 들어 “Do you love cats?
I thought long and hard whether this is a “thumbs down” game. There’s great stuff here – originality of the gameplay mechanics, cool visuals, mix of genres, horror element…but all of this could be summed up with the word “potential”. What we actually have once it gets going is a bit of a jumbled mess, restrictive parser, slightly deceptive demo and a “poof!” of an ending. So, despite it being a promising title, if I ask myself a question Steam asks me when I write reviews – “Do you recommend this game?”, the answer, unfortunately, would be a no. What worked: - A blend of text adventure with graphics on top is a very neat idea. It’s almost like a point’n’click added to the mix. The demo of this game (something that sold me on it) is fun. A bit nonsensical as far as the tasks go but Fun with a capital “F”, nonetheless. - A fusion of visuals nicely reflects horror theme; think of Buddy Simulator 1984 (a brilliant game I Doesn’t Exist, probably, took inspiration from). There are colorful pixelated parts that add an eerie charm, and green-hued ones that speak of retro-horror. There are green 3D psychedelic-like environments too. We spend very brief amount of time in them, but the change from one to (often unexpected) another makes everything extra mysterious. - The idea. The idea is novel and funky and spooky. It looked and felt like they were going to crush it with this one. What didn’t work: - Text parser which is supposed to be the core of this game. After downloading self-hosting AI that brings this text adventure size to over 10 gigs and loading times of several minutes, you get to play with a fairly standard set-up common to any IF for a bit (the demo part). Then game switches to open-ended questions which are incredibly restrictive. Any deviation, however slight, from a straight as a railroad track question it wants you to ask met with “[blank] doesn’t exist”. I see what you did there, game. Haha. It was funny for the first 5 times, but after a while you start asking yourself what is the point of this? Just present me with what you’d like me to say, and I’ll press a button, as in your standard dialogue tree, since you aren’t letting me play around with it; otherwise, it’s an immersion-breaking exercise in frustration. - Very short length (you can finish it in an hour and a half, and demo covers about half of it) for what this game was trying to incorporate. It’s a text adventure that is also standard adventure with a maze and a puzzle; a pixel graphics adventure that is also 3D adventure; a horror that is also meta that is also about mental health… It’s a tall order to deliver it all in a coherent manner, and I wish there would be more time to showcase all these ambitious ideas developers had, but after that first 45 minutes or so, everything just wizzes by in a flurry of drastic changes, and it ultimately turns out underbaked. It's telling that in a 90-minute game that promised to be so much fun, I didn’t really want to go for a different ending. It felt like a chore, and I blame it on the raw implementation of the most important part here – the text parser. If the AI-fueled wonder would have worked as intended – I could have spent, potentially, hours more in-game, just testing the limits of what I can do and playing around with it, transforming a short disappointing experience into a longer satisfying one. As it stands, this game had enormous promise and potential and turned out to be a letdown precisely of how high it was able to set my hopes up at first. Strong start warped into a fizzled-out ending. Still, the talent is definitely there, so I’d love to see what they have in store for the next one. Let’s write this one off as a shaky debut.
DO NOT BUY THIS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GAME
Quickfire why you shouldn't:

It's not a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ text adventure, for starters
Instead of using a normal text parser, it uses an AI
It's hosting an AI on your machine locally, so get ready to fry your laptop!

The game is just a meandering conversation where all you can do is side with one of two characters. That's it. It's total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Well, I wanted to like this. The music, the ambience, and the pixel art in the beginning is quite well done. The parser is dumb--so dumb that it's very frustrating. Even the basic Inform 7 parser knows more than this one. Infuriating. There are single solutions to every puzzle. And the world "within" or what have you leaves a lot to be desired. Chatting with the character, a repeated theme, often leads absolutely nowhere. I think there's a gem of a genius game here, but it needs a LOT of refinement to get the message across well. Don't sell yourself as a "modern text adventure," when you're trying to be unnecessarily provocative and deep.
While
feeling deprotagonized
is usually un-fun, here it was part of the (interesting) narrative conceit, so I was tentatively OK with that. (To a point.) But on top of and separate from that, I felt like the game kept railroading me into these WE MUST MAKE TIME FOR YOU TO PLAY WITH THE PARSER situations. And *in* those situations, the parser wasn't good enough for me to actually communicate the meaning or action that I wanted to! "How do you behave in circumstance X?" stops being a meaningful question when your agency over your actions drops below a certain point. Emotionally, the experience felt like trying to help someone in the throes of a mental crisis using a glitchy version of Google Translate, and getting alternately sobbed at / yelled at for things I neither meant nor wanted to say as a result. I was close to quitting as a result of that, and then the game LITERALLY
forces you say terrible things to someone in pain - not as in "the parser interpretation of my words is wonky" but as in "when you try to type something, different words are put in their place".
Maybe the game has an awesome story arc, but it's locked behind some unknown duration of me feeling like I'm being horrible. For an extra bonus, the narrative conceit also turns quitting the game into a guilt trip!
Tried to do something neat, what with the nature of conversing ingame, but it was far too clunky to really work.
It has some key moments and it seems some people have really connected with the game. But it's not for me. What could have been an amazing text based adventure turns into a chaotic multimedia dispute between the game character, the system AI and myself.
