We wanted to share an update with our community. Hyper Light Breaker will not be receiving further development for the time being. We’re incredibly grateful for the passion and support you’ve shown since Early Access. Please stay tuned to our official channels and Steam page for any future updates. - The Arc Games Team
This is unfortunate, because I had a lot of expectations.
Development is ending prematurely as they're laying off staff. This game likely needed another year or two to really bring it all together and it's a damn shame it will never get a chance to shine, as there was some really cool and unique ideas here.

I’m a big fan (and backer) of the original Hyper Light Drifter, and unfortunately Hyper Light Breaker doesn’t really have many similarities to it besides the title, aesthetics, and maybe the combat. That said, on its own merits it’s not really a bad game. It’s a good foundation to grow into something more, but at the moment it’s just a bit empty, repetitive, and half-baked. What’s there is interesting as far as being a work-in-progress, and I was willing to wait to see what it turned into as it was developed more. Sadly, they just announced that they’re laying off the team and cancelling anymore work on the game after one final update. While we still need to see what that update brings, the game is so far from being worth the price that I’m pretty confident in saying that I don’t recommend buying Hyper Light Breaker. If you haven’t played Hyper Light Drifter, definitely get it instead. It’s heartbreaking, Heart Machine. Edit: the dev team is entirely laid off now and the publisher announced that they won’t even be releasing the final update they promised. The game is fully abandoned, and *no one* should spend any money on it at this point.
Bought day 1 and was loving it, but it ran like crap so quit until 1.0, kinda wish I'd just refunded now, beyond gutted that it's cancelled, even more gutted people lost their jobs, whole thing sucks.
As of early access this game has a mountain to climb. I tried really hard to enjoy this game, and it's completely possible it's just not for me, but I have some notes. The art style, sound design and character design are all wonderful. That is where my positive notes end. The style of the game is nice, the cracked foundation has a really pretty coat of paint. On both controller and mouse + keyboard, the combat is clunky. Lock-on targeting does not benefit this game in a 3D space with how instant you need to react to attacks that deal 1/5 of your health from almost every enemy. Parrying is too little of reward for the risk, you might get 7 of your 90 hp back, but you're stuck in place and get no follow up. Staggering (poise break) gives you an animation locked attack that takes so long and does so little, you're better off attacking other enemies in the mean time as you'll get more damage. Ranged builds rely on RNG so heavily that attempting to play as a ranged character is pointless, despite the fact that 2 characters are built around their ranged weapons. The movement is atrocious, in a day and age where so many games are copying the stamina climbing systems of Breath of the Wild, HLB somehow does the impressive job of making a worse system. The glider lowers your altitude extremely fast so its not good for long distance gliding, but also you take so little fall damage that I'm surprised there's even a glider anyway. The hoverboard is fun until you want to turn at a decent rate and then collide with a pebble and can't move. There IS a "vaulting" mechanic, but it's only when you use your dodge at a wall or surface to run up it. The loot extraction is a fun mechanic, until you realize how little most materials matter because you only want weapon upgrades and the main items to unlock bosses, so everything else is pointless even though you're supposed to be upgrading the HUB area. I really hope they expand on all these features and make this combat even somewhat clean. This feels like a game I would be trying in 2012 on Steam Greenlight. I don't mean to be overly negative, but using the Hyperlight Drifter IP, yet doing almost nothing with it, begs the question of how this game will turn out. I really enjoy these types of game, but exploration and combat being the focus mean they have to feel buttery smooth, and I keep finding chunks and lumps and it's getting gross.
I've been looking forward to this game since it first entered early access, but I held off because of the criticism it received. As a huge fan of Hyper Light Drifter, I was thrilled about a sequel and even more excited when I learned it would be a roguelike. After watching the trailer for the Double Down update, I decided to dive in. Although it's still a work in progress, the game feels incredibly polished. The new direction, especially with the changes from the update, feels fantastic. I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying it and can see myself sinking hundreds of hours into this. It feels like the developers have combined the combat and atmosphere of Hyper Light Drifter with the addictive gameplay loop of Wizard of Legend, all in a beautiful 3D space. This game is a rare gem that perfectly hits my sweet spot. It's not overly complicated yet remains deeply engaging and feels endlessly replayable. In fact, I love it so much that I'd want the option to wipe all my progress and start over from the very beginning.
You never should've chased the roguelike trend. Hyper Light Drifter was an all timer... This is just sad.
