This is one of those that define good, but not great. It's like any number of deck building rogue lites that you've played before. So the backdrop of this one is you get 1 of 4 different characters that allow you to play as with 4 unique deck styles. Good. The story. I actually really like the way the story is presented. I think the quest system going through each of it's 4 maps is pretty neat (The last map is just the final boss run) I think they do a good job establishing the lore and give some contact to the things you're doing in the game. It's rare you get that a whole lot in the deck builders so I'm happy with it. Sound design. Both in terms of voice acting and music. I wouldn't call either great, but both are very solid for a base price game of $20. Art direction. I think they do a good job with the eldritch style both for the monsters, characters and the backgrounds. Bad. Class balance. The game really only seems to have 2 viable end game classes . with one other one being kind of mid, and one being just awful. This is pretty disappointing. Difficulty spikes. The games difficulty spikes feel more frustrating than fun. Especially going to the last fight where it seems grinding out levels and additional bonuses is the only way to win due to how little you get before the fight. Overall number of cards. The game really feels out of sorts with the different builds you can do within each class. It looks like the game really wants you to play one of two ways if you want to win which is disappointing. Overall grade: C+ For $20 it's solid pick up if you get it on sale like I did I think it's a very worthwhile buy. Just don't think it's going to reach the heights of a Slay the Spire, Inception, or even the Tainted Grail card game.
I think this game is okay overall. It isn't hard and the grind of going for 100% like in Menace of the deep is a lot shorter. It's fine for what it is but there are several pros and cons about this game that I should get into for anyone looking for a roguelite deckbuilder. Overall the artstyle is nice and the sound track isn't bad either. It's very stylized and that isn't a bad thing at all. Meta progression feels pretty good like it makes a massive difference in your power, but there are draw backs to that heavy power from progressing. Achievements to 100% this game are pretty straight forward and simple and just need some grind to get finished. The game feels very manageable after your first 1-2 runs making it so you steamroll through the content pretty easy. The negatives to this game however are kind of high. For one, the 4th act is a massive difficulty spike from the other 3 expecting you to have beaten the other 3 acts 7-8 times each at least if you want to take on the challenging final one. Another unfortunate thing is that the meta progression isn't cards or relics since you have access to every card and every relic right off the bat. There are no additional unlocks for any of the things you will find on the run which makes it kind of dull having a full run allow you to see almost every card and relic available to you making for very samey runs since you will probably get the same cards and the same relics to finish. Unlike other deck builders, this game feels like there is basically only 1 or at most 2 ways to play the agents which heavily limits any form of build variety. The mental health meter similar to Darkest Dungeon's stress bar hardly will ever be taken into account as if you've been given far too much to finish the run. On top of that, the system uses something called Doom where as you progress and pick different locations, the longer it takes to get to the end, the more scaling the enemies get which often wasn't a problem and easily avoided as long as you didn't make decisions like +1 energy per turn at the cost of faster doom scaling. Having maxed out characters often made this stat a nonfactor anyway and it was simple to keep in check. The overall balancing seems a little off where some runs seem extremely easy like you will melt the boss down to nothing before it even does anything if you know what you're doing. Most bosses even until now I don't even know if they were threatening because they just die in a few good turns. You get few chances to upgrade and removing cards is extremely easy so it's very possible to go into infinites with 0 cost draws on some characters. Enemy variety isn't really all there. 3-4 types of rats, 5-8 types of humans, 5-7 types of man-made machines, 7-9 types of creatures/beasts and a handful of bosses. Sounds like a lot but the issue is every fight usually contains 1-4 different kinds of these enemies so you end up seeing the entire chafe roster in a few runs minus some bosses. Different acts you'll even see the enemy types bleed across them so you'll know what you're fighting right away before the fight starts. It's nice that there are animations for the characters but the game can break if you play cards too quickly. Characters only attack for the first animation while the other hits go through like normal and they just stand there which was a little disappointing. However, something that was annoying was if you played your cards too fast, sometimes the game doesn't even register you played a card. It goes to discard, it gets played, it doesn't have any effects and you just wasted energy on nothing. Trying to rush through spam clicking has broken the game before and was a slight issue for me when trying to 100% Menace from the Deep. Overall this game is a dumbed down version of Menace from the Deep and if you want a power crept deck builder with little challenge, this one might be the one for you. For what it is despite having many negatives, this game is just considered fine. It's not great, it's not the worst thing in the world, it's just okay. Get it on a discount though because this game doesn't really have a lot to it.
Beautifully drawn, nicely voiced, stylish card game with plot. LOVED it
