[h1]The title says it all. XD[/h1] [h2]Introduction[/h2] [i]How to Melt a Maiden's Heart[/i] is a yaoi kinetic visual novel developed and published by ebi-hime. You take on the role of Reo Fujibayashi, a high school student who's trying to win the heart of his childhood best friend, Chinami, even though she rejected him. It doesn't help that Reo comes off as rude and crass although his behavior doesn't bother Chinami. As he ponders over his dilemma, he discovers a secret about Yuuma Sugawara, the student council president who always follows the rules and tends to get on Reo's case about homework and getting to school on time. It turns out that Yuuma has been working part-time as a maid (yes, that's right lol) at a maid cafe (but certainly not by choice), and now Reo is using that information to blackmail him. In order for his secret not to get exposed, Yuuma agrees to help Reo get together with Chinami. How will Reo and Yuuma get along when they both can't stand each other? With the gameplay, the story is linear, so no choices are presented. There are a total of 4 chapters with several CGs, a varied soundtrack, and Steam achievements although achievements won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". No voice acting is present, but that tends to be the norm for indie visual novels. [h2]Review[/h2] Having played most of ebi-hime's visual novels by now, I've enjoyed these stories very much, and [i]How to Melt a Maiden's Heart[/i] is no exception. I enjoyed how the story starts off with Reo having a nightmare about confessing to Chinami, only for her to turn him down. However, it turns out that this actually happened even though Reo isn't deterred from winning Chinami over. Although Reo isn't an ideal student and can come off as rude with some people, he turns out to be nice. He's just awkward when it comes to interacting with people. Then there's Yuuma, the stern student council president. On the surface, he seems perfect, with excellent grades and all the girls wanting to be with him. However, there's the secret with him working at a maid cafe, which ruins that facade. Nevertheless, when Reo and Yuuma start working together, they learn about each other, and gradually, their opinions change. Reo realizes that Yuuma has had it tough with his family life, while Yuuma sees that Reo is a caring older brother and has good qualities although they're not in the field of academics. I like how the relationship between these two blossoms from enemies to acquaintances to friends and to - well, you can guess it - to boyfriends. It was sweet to witness it, and I couldn't help feeling happy that they end up together. ^^ The story itself is mostly slice-of-life and comedical but never over-the-top. It does have its serious, emotional moments, too, which reveals that various characters, especially Reo and Yuuma, are more than they appear on the surface. (On a side note, I like that the setting of the story is the same as in [i]My Dear Prince[/i], so there's a nice crossover although it definitely isn't necessary to have played [i]My Dear Prince[/i].) With the writing, it's paced well, and I only noticed a couple of typos. In regards to the art, it has a beautiful anime style that tends to be the case for visual novels. The sprites and backgrounds are drawn and colored well, and of course, the CGs are especially eye-catching. If you enjoy sweet yaoi visual novels that are mostly light-hearted and comedical but have a few serious emotional moments, enjoy visual novels by ebi-hime, and/or want to get all those Steam achievements, then it's worth checking out. For the asking price, it's fair for a newly released game, but you can always wait for a sale, and it's in a couple of Steam bundles. You step in the shoes of Reo, an 18 year-old high-school student who gets rejected by his childhood friend after finally confessing his feelings to her. Not long after, when Reo’s family decides to visit a maid cafe, he accidentally finds out that his strict, rule-abiding classmate and class president Sugawara is working there cross-dressed as a maid, largely against his will. At school, Sugawara is Reo’s arch-nemesis, who frequently scolds Reo for being late and neglecting his studies. While the game doesn’t feature voice acting, the soundtrack more than makes up for it with very catchy and memorable music that fits the tone perfectly. The game’s visuals are decent and colourful, but nothing out of the ordinary. [i]How to Melt a Maiden's Heart[/i] is a kinetic rom-com visual novel centered around a late high-school protagonist grappling with his first romantic experiences. Given that he and his best friend of more than a decade have slowly been growing more distant, he sets himself a deadline of a few weeks to woo her. As she seems destined to view him as a friend only, he forcefully ropes in his mortal enemy, the school council president, to assist. Unexpected feelings arise, etc. With the main character's single parent family and various students and teachers, there are neither too few nor too many characters for the story to unfold. His two twin brothers in particular are used as great comedic reinforcers. One of them has a pet dinosaur plushie that is used to express his emotions, which works excellently. As this is a fairly undramatic enemies-to-lovers story without any attempts at shocking twists, be prepared for a VN that most of all wants you to smile. I definitely did. The setting is the same Japanese island Omorishima as [i]My Dear Prince[/i]. Attentive readers may spot references to fictional media from other ebi-hime works such as [i]All the Words She Wrote[/i] or [i]Shut-in Vampire[/i], but not to the degree that any familiarity with those works would be required. It features that trademark ebi-hime writing style full of various Britishisms, so if you are looking for very simple language, or expressions like "to push the boat out" cause you irreconcilable disbelief suspension issues in a Japanese setting, [i]HtMaMH[/i] might not be your cup of tea. For me, her writing is the appeal here, so I'm in the opposite camp. At the risk of parroting the game's store page, it's up to 8 hours of reading and there's nothing all too explicit in it. Being fully kinetic, doesn't contain choices or require you to keep track of anything.

Saw a boy in a maid dress, and I knew I had to instantly buy this game. Sugawara is so cute! I love fluffy-haired characters. The plot is slow, but once it gets going, I had to finish it. A boy thinking he’s gonna get a girlfriend when he’s the protagonist of a BL? Always hilarious. Reo got his whole world *rocked*.

1) this was so sweet that it forgave my student loans paid for my water bill made healthcare free my dentists hate me more than ever etc etc i really dont know how to detail how many heart palpitations this gave me part of why this took me so long to read despite the fact i am generally a very fast reader is because i kept rereading certain scenes to go wwwaauuuhhughhuuuuehhhhh. i really admire a game that can do that, especially since i couldn't just pull up a log so id just manually go back many many lines to reread things. i dont want to put spoilers here, but i can say that my cat probably hates me because i'd keep shaking and shouting UAUGHHEUUGYYEWAHUUUUGUHHHH. also i had to clutch at my chest a bit. i really did feel like a 2013 anime fan going KYAAAH at things despite being an adult anyways incase it isn't obvious from the above paragraph: main characters were very lovely. i enjoyed their dynamic a lot. cute 2) i have to applaud this game for regularly making me think "LMAOOO THIS IS ABOUT TO BE HILARIOUS WEDDING SPEECH MATERIAL" or something along those lines. dev if you're reading this please know that if ever you post about reo and yuuma in the future of this game... i already follow you so i will be reading <3 3) it should be mentioned that i am fond (if at least in a nostalgic way) of the main inspirations for this and i am so glad that someone went BUT WHAT IF [MAIN INSPIRATION] WERE BL because i hadn't even thought of that so when i saw that i was like JAWDROP. Pointy-toothed dumbass has no idea he is a BL protagonist. Absurdly funny premise so far. The theme song is good, but a bit intense for a reading experience in my opinion, and it shows up fairly frequently. It’s in the trailer so you can make your own decision. Will revise review after I finish reading. EDIT: It was neato. Didn't last very long after the confession between the boys, but it was sweet.

The story is pretty amusing as it is a take on the enemies-to-lovers trope and the way it unfolds is great too. In a nutshell, the main character has a childhood crush but was rejected by said crush. During a family outing to a maid cafe, he sees his arch-nemesis, the strict student president, crossdressing as a maid. The main character uses this chance to blackmail the student president into helping the main character woo his crush. The characters feel like they each have their own personality which may be a no-brainer, but it makes their interactions with each other feel more lifelike instead of feeling scripted. The younger sister, who is mentally more mature than the main character, really did get on my nerves sometimes which is a good thing because it made me feel immersed in the story. Speaking of the main character, I love how we see the struggles of his life through his perspective and what he does to deal with them. Then it gets immediately challenged by the student president who assumes that the main character is being a lazy piece of sh*t. There's this dynamic between the main character and the student president in which they both assume things about the other until they actually start talking and bonding, Yeah, I recommend this BL novel which I enjoyed as a light-hearted visual novel in comparison to ebi-hime's other works (the ones with the cousins).

How To Melt A Maiden's Heart is brilliantly well-written VN where the protagonist, Reo, is an athletic and very physically-inclined, in contrast to academic, senior high school student. He is determined to claim Chinami as his girlfriend, even if it involves (mildly) blackmailing President Yuuma. Reo's younger sister, Hitomi, playes a very amusing role in the story, as do his young twin brothers. The artwork, music and UI are excellent and I sincerely thank ebi-hime once again for a wonderful VN!
