Naoki was really excited about spending Christmas with his beloved. But those plans weren't meant to be - Naoki saw her hugging another guy. Christmas seems ruined but just one random encounter can change everything. This is a Japanese-style kinetic visual novel about Christmas.

Let's get this out of the way: Winter With You is not a game in any sense of the word. For those of you who might be new or unfamiliar with the Visual Novel genre, this is (as advertised) a kinetic VN. That means there's no interaction beyond clicking the mouse or tapping the enter key to advance text. As such, this is going to be reviewed much more like a book than a game moving forward. The story follows Naoki, a guy who thinks he just caught his girlfriend cheating on him around Christmas, and his seemingly chance encounter with Yume, a bubbly blonde. The story itself was written in Russian (or some other Cyrillic language, apologies if I'm wrong – I have very little knowledge on them) and translated to English. I'm inclined to say that this wasn't a machine translation – it's very good, but there's a handful of spelling or syntax errors. They were nothing that I'd call problematic; I had no issues understanding what was going on, or the intention of the speaker, but they were noticeable. The backgrounds are very detailed, and the CG's are lovely. There's a noticeable step down on the character art in non-CG instances, but it's at least at the standard of an average VN at all times, and generally a touch higher. The sound and voice acting are good, particularly when compared to other indie VN's, and are definitely a highlight. It touches on themes of commitment and growing up, and is very well-done, but again, this is a kinetic novel, so there's no choices to be made, even cosmetic ones. You spend a lot of dramatic time with your girlfriend, and a lot of lighthearted time with the other girl. All of this feels like perhaps it could have worked as a very basic (and more traditional) visual novel, and left me feeling more curious about what it could have been, rather than what it was. I enjoyed the story itself, but it did end a bit abruptly, though really..if the worst thing to be said was “I wish there was more of it,”...that's not really a condemnation, is it? If you like the kinetic style of VN, this is definitely worth your time.
Kinetic novella about love and Christmas. Decent read.
Winter With You is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This one has a "christmas" theme and a bunch of the developers imaginary waifu's that he dates in his fan fiction, or whatever... these things are always written like trash fan fictions, this is no exception. The images are all asset flipped/construction kit hack jobs slapped together with Live2D/cubism, so no actual artistry was conducted by the "author" here. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. You can get better quality books and comics for free online or from public libraries, or from bookstores for a fraction of the price of this "game". Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games. Winter With You has the laughable, eye-watering price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this E-Book as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the E-Book (to date). Until this status changes, this E-Book will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this E-Book.
The game is fine, even funny at times and I really liked the Christmas atmosphere. I even like russian voice acting, although english translation left me confused sometimes, one more editing pass would be great, A bit shame everything ended rather abruptly since it would be great doing hatsumode with everyone as epilogue. Whole thing kinda left me wanting for more :D There were few scripting bugs but nothing too serious since this is kinetic novel. I really liked Yume a lot, probably even more than Miyuki. This is probably due to fact that the MC spend the most of time with her having fun while Miyuki got all the drama in comparison. Too bad there were no choices she would be my go to heroine. In the end the story was extremely simple but I still enjoyed it and liked the characters. Perhaps a sequel set in spring might be nice?
Read this same story before in another visual novel and didn't like it then either.
Pros
+ Animated sprites + Nice background art
Cons
- Incoherent, unlikable story Final verdict: ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆★★ 2/10 - Awful I was searching for Christmas-themed visual novels to read during this season and Winter With You appeared among the results. I was puzzled because the images on the Store page looked highly familiar and I could have sworn I had already read through this, but there was no review from me so this couldn't have been the case. I was curious and decided to get this one. The story began simple enough, a saddened young man, Naoki, encountered a cheerful street musician Yume on Christmas and took her to dinner. They got along and he complained about his girlfriend, Miyuki, to him as he believed she was cheating on him. Around this time I realized I had absolutely read this story before, but it had been in another visual novel. The developer used to have another visual novel called Crystal Winter on Steam, which they had published under the name “Izimov A.”. Looking into it, Crystal Winter was released in December 2022 while Winter With You was released January 2022, which is just incredibly odd. My memory of Crystal Winter is not perfect as it has been couple years since I read it but I do not recall it having voice acting. I do remember the basic story though, since I reviewed it and thought it was moronic, and the same events occur here. I have no guesses as to why the developer would have released this game and then some months later re-released it under a different title and (slightly) different developer name... Crystal Winter was removed from the Steam Store in May of 2025, so these two games existed side by side for quite a long time and I'm surprised I hadn't noticed that before. It likely wouldn't have come to my attention if someone hadn't listed Winter With You in a Christmas visual novel list. As for the story... It is largely the same as it was in Crystal Winter, but I believe this might have more content that that version; it certainly felt longer than what Crystal Winter had been and there were couple characters I couldn't remember. I still do not have anything favorable to say about the plot itself. I'm not entirely convinced that this wouldn't have been generated by an AI rather than written by an actual person – even if the release of this visual novel pre-dates the AI boom – it seems so baffling that a real person would've thought this story to make any sense. The main character, Naoki, is confusingly juvenile and unlikable man. Every decision Naoki makes during the first half of the story reeks of something you might see in a clumsy harem comedy, not something you'd want to see in supposedly heartwarming story of a young adult dealing with an issue. The two female leads are both superficial and their personalities are robotic, neither of them raise any conflict toward Naoki for anything. Miyuki doesn't mind her boyfriend essentially sniffing at a teenager's bare thighs under the table (and neither do Yume's parents), and she's only apologetic that a misunderstanding had formed. Their reactions are so disingenuous that both girls give off Stepford Wives vibes, giving the whole moronic story an unplanned horror undertone. It's made worse by the fact that both girls, for some reason, are perfectly fine with discussing the other's breast size with Naoki. There is even a scene where Naoki and Miyuki lie in bed and their conversation briefly steers into talking about a teenage girl's breasts. The story also just ends on a freeze frame, which made me think the game froze entirely but no, it just doesn't end properly. The CGs in general were passable, with the background arts looking quite lovely and inviting with their use of color. Character art was a bit poorer, the proportions were off to a point it was distracting to look at yet they were also given nice, solid coloring work. Certainly not hideous to look at and I wouldn't have been too bothered by the proportions problem if I had been enjoying the story. The most positive thing about Winter With You is absolutely the animated sprites for the main girls, and while their animations are minimal and slightly awkward, it does give some life to the kinetic novel.
