Great game, they really nailed Hogwarts and its surrounding world, just beautiful.
Recommended (under protest.) Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most frustrating games I have ever enjoyed. It is simultaneously one of the best and one of the most exasperating adaptations of an existing universe I've played, because every single time it does something brilliant, it immediately follows it up with a design decision so baffling it borders on self-parody. I bought a game about being a Hogwarts student. What I got was a part-time job in magical customer service. Apparently my unique affinity for ancient magic also qualifies me to retrieve your gobstones, locate your missing scarf, deliver your parcels, settle your family disputes, investigate your suspicious well, participate in Merlin's pathological fascination with low-effort environmental puzzles, and eradicate the local poacher population before dinner. The wizarding world is on the precipice of catastrophe. Anyway. Shame about your gloves. The atmosphere is, without question, the game's greatest triumph. Hogwarts is astonishing. Not "good for a video game" astonishing - just astonishing. Every corridor invites you to wander off, every classroom looks like it has a story to tell, and the castle has this uncanny ability to derail your plans for the next hour because you spotted a staircase you haven't climbed yet. It's the kind of environment that makes exploration feel instinctive rather than obligatory. Which is fortunate, because the game seems pathologically incapable of exercising restraint. Every square metre of the map has to contain a cave, a chest, a page, a balloon, an astronomy table, an Ancient Magic hotspot, a Demiguise statue, a bandit camp, a landing platform, or something that requires me to cast Revelio for the seven hundredth time. Seriously, the game treats empty space like a personal failure. At some point exploration ceases to be exploration and quietly mutates into unpaid administrative work. The combat, to its credit, is genuinely excellent. Once you've unlocked a decent selection of spells, battles become fast, creative and surprisingly expressive. It never really gets old turning an unfortunate poacher into an unwilling participant in what can only be described as an ethically questionable physics demonstration. The narrative, however, suffers from a chronic inability to commit to itself. It constantly gestures towards moral complexity, political tension and genuinely interesting ideas, only to abandon them before they develop into anything meaningful. One minute you're dealing with ancient magic that supposedly threatens the future of the wizarding world. The next you're chasing someone's Mooncalf because apparently the apocalypse operates on office hours. The tonal whiplash is spectacular. And then there's the side content. Not because side content is inherently bad - quite the opposite - but because Hogwarts Legacy appears convinced that quantity is an adequate substitute for depth. Which brings us to the Merlin Trials. I genuinely need to know who sat in that meeting, looked at the concept of small environmental puzzles, and confidently said: "Excellent. Let's make fifty-two." Fifty-two. Not because the mechanic evolves. Not because the puzzles become increasingly sophisticated. Simply because... fifty-two sounded reasonable, apparently. The first handful are charming. The next dozen are repetitive. The last twenty feel less like puzzles and more like a legally binding contract. And your reward? A marginal increase in inventory capacity. You spend hours completing the life's work of arguably the most famous wizard in history just so that your pockets can accommodate approximately one additional speck of dust. It's difficult not to admire the audacity. Speaking of avoidable suffering: Revelio. Whose idea was it to make the single most indispensable spell in the game expire before I've even finished processing what it highlighted? Half the time it proudly reveals something so astronomically far away that I can't tell whether it's a collectible or a small village. The other half it points somewhere that can only be described as "best of luck". By the end of the game I wasn't casting Revelio because I wanted information. I was casting it out of muscle memory and spite. While we're here, whoever decided that learning Alohomora should unlock increasingly difficult lockpicking minigames instead of, you know.. unlocking locks, owes me several hours of my life back. The technical state of the game doesn't help. Random stuttering. Frame drops. Objects materialising out of thin air. NPCs whose daily routine appears to consist primarily of staring into the void. There are moments where the immersion is so complete you genuinely forget you're playing a game. And then a staircase, a wall, and two students simultaneously decide to load into existence. The illusion is hanging on by a thread. Which is perhaps the most frustrating thing about Hogwarts Legacy. The brilliance is unmistakably there. You can see it. You can feel it. You can almost reach it. Beneath the bloated progression systems, the repetitive activities, the underwritten characters and the occasionally schizophrenic pacing is an absolutely phenomenal game desperately trying to escape. It just needed someone in the room whose sole responsibility was to ask: "Do we actually need this?" More often than not, the answer would have been no. Despite everything I've just written, I kept playing. (Apparently, so did the developers. Nobody told either of us when to stop.) I explored every corner of Hogwarts. I chased collectibles I absolutely did not need. I spent an embarrassing amount of time coordinating outfits before fighting dark wizards because looking good is, evidently, an indispensable component of combat. I complained. Constantly. I also couldn't stop playing. So yes, I recommend Hogwarts Legacy. I just wish someone had told Avalanche that "more" and "better" are not synonyms.
- unnecessary woke - bugged physics - frequent crashes + worldbuilding + combat
Hogwarts Legacy is not bad. There's many things it does very well. Their rendition of Hogwarts and the surrounding area is genuinely beautiful, the entire game oozes polish, combat and movement feels good. But at the same time it's painfully uninnovative and boring, both as a game and as a story. The open world just screams "Bully: Harry Potter Edition". There's so, so much Avalanche Software could have done here. They poured hundreds of millions of dollars into creating the best digital version of the Harry Potter universe there ever was. But the end result is... a mechanically bland, theme-park-like, Open World™ AAA game with heavily railroaded quest chains and meaningless side activities that just serve to kill time. What a waste. The open world is not alive. NPCs are window dressing, nothing of consequence happens without the player initiating it, there is no real sandbox to play around with, there are no interesting mechanics that sell me the fantasy of being a student at Hogwarts, hell, even the selection of interactable objects in the game world feels like a token inclusion. The game is just a very shiny Harry-Potter-branded AAA timewaster in which you do a quest, kill some time, do another quest, kill some more time, repeat ad nauseam. Frequent crashes and performance issues are still present in the game years after release (though seemingly not as bad as they used to be). Some UX/UI design choices are genuinely baffling (joystick-driven cursor menu navigation on controllers?! Are you insane?) and cannot be fully fixed through modding. I was also looking forward to full DualSense support on PC, but alas, it's not present and has to be modded in. On the topic of mods: with a recent update, modding was tied to a walled-garden system which requires a WB account and gives WB full editorial control over which mods are allowed in the game. Many old mods do not work anymore. On top of that disappointment, one thing that really irks me is the obvious Hollywoodization of the setting that's going on. I won't relitigate the culture war nonsense surrounding this game here, but I need to mention that Avalanche spent significant resources on attempting to please an audience that doesn't play video games in the first place (and didn't appreciate their effort anyway) while simultaneously being staggeringly culturally insensitive towards Brits. Forcing in a very clumsily written Zimbabwean character while completely ignoring Scots, the Welsh and the Irish (in a game set in Scotland during the 19th century, mind you) is certainly a choice. As another reviewer wrote, this truly is something only Americans could make. I would absolutely not recommend this game at full price. 60€ or your regional equivalent is nuts for a game that you're realistically going to play once and then never again, since there's nothing mechanically interesting beyond the main quest. I got the Deluxe Edition for 10,49€ during the Summer Sale and I think that's about right.
Jeu visuellement beau.
