♡ TLDR ♡
HOA is a beautiful art piece coupled with lovely relaxing music - and this sadly, is where my praise must end.
♡ DETAILS ♡
I hate to have yet another negative review, but I just cannot recommend this game. With 2.7 hours playtime (and at least 40 minutes of non-progression playing with my cat or lost in the dark); $15 USD just does not feel worth the experience you get. If it was $5 total, maybe on sale for $3 - Id say - ok, sure - that seems fair... Not because I think peoples hard work shouldn't be compensated, but primarily because it fails at being anything other than artwork - and by the end, it somehow even failed at that by introducing asinine mechanics that simply take away from its beauty - had they been implemented well, perhaps I would have a better opinion.
♡ ART & SOUNDS ♡
Stunning art, cute animations, Lovely color pallet, and relaxing music.
♡ MOVEMENT & BUGS ♡
the movement seemed fine 80% of the time - then the other 20% my character would just - respond with the wrong actions to my inputs? I press right, she goes left? or I press jump, she runs right? it was weird, moments where the game hiccupped and it seemed like input delay, but it was inconsistent. I guess you can call it jank - but it was a bit odd. My controller has no issues with anything else - and it isn't like this is an intense game on the system... It also seemed that sometimes certain mechanics didn't function as intended all of the time, causing confusion on how to progress. Late in the game
In the underwater section in the late game, there is a Jetstream blocking your progression and a crab nearby. I stood on the crab probably 4 times and he never woke up - after wandering around for quite some time, I trod on him again and he woke and moved, allowing me to solve the puzzle and move on.
In another section (early in the game)
There is the 1st bluebell hook you need to grab and swing from - when you approach it, leaves spawn under it, but too far to jump up and get to the hook. I spent a few minutes trying to jump to it, over and over, till I was about to leave the area assuming I was missing some key ability - and just as I began to leave the area, the lady bugs spawned that you have to jump from to get up there. Had they spawned properly, I would have moved through the section without a thought easily - but since they didn't, I was left wandering around thinking I had missed something.
ALSO!!!! The one section that could have been the star of the show... was just turned into a cutscene? with nothing for you, the player to even do... it just played itself. How disappointing. Things like this are particularly rotten because you never know if you are the idiot - or the game just failed to do what it was supposed to do.
♡ DIFFICULTY & GAMEPLAY ♡
Starts out as the easiest game, requiring little to no brain work, making you think its more a low difficulty platformer focused solely on the art that would likely be good for kids, but then in the later stages it begins adding infuriating mechanics that just aren't fun and serve to annoy. Had the difficulty remained consistent, I would say this is probably a good intro game to platformers for young kids... but I cant with the later stages.
♡ MAP AND NAVIGATION ♡
Navigation was mostly easy, again; until you reach the later levels of the game where obnoxious mechanics are introduced and level sections were repeated. I did get lost for probably 20+ minutes unable to figure out that I was supposed to 'fly' underwater to reach seemingly unreachable spots after smearing my face across the walls in pitch black level geometry. Playing blind is not my idea of fun.
♡ STORY ♡
Pretty vague lacking inspiration, failed to capture my attention in the slightest. /)/) ( . .)
♡ FINAL THOUGHTS ♡
Once again, there are just better games out there, and life is too short to play mediocre ones. Honestly, just watch it on youtube.

Great for kids, but to easy and short. Pity, you get only around 4 h relaxed gaming.
What a lovely game!
I loosely recommend this game, but with a bit of a caveat. I have some mixed feelings about this one: First of all, the visuals are STUNNING! All the environments look gorgeous, vibrant, colourful and interesting. All of the characters you encounter are adorable. For the most part the maps are designed decently (except a few instances where the player is made to take the LONG WAY AROUND! Even when they could have given a more convenient way to progress), with some annoyances, but most of the mechanics worked well in the game, except at times when your character doesn't grab on to items that he should. There were a few easy puzzles. It won't give your brain a workout but it was intended to be a chill cozy game anyway. There were a few things I found disappointing though, starting with the music. I personally wasn't a fan of the music. Most of it sounded too much like the easy listening piano music that you'd hear in your dentist's waiting room, and for me didn't add anything to the game. The dialogue is extremely shallow. The conversations with the leaders of each of the maps/areas were all essentially the same ("i haven't seen you since you were little. If you're looking for him you have to go to this place. I can teach you a new skill for 5 butterflies. Good luck, dear"). There's very little substance to any of the dialogue, which reflects the situation with the story-you have no idea whats going on or who youre looking for or why until the end of the game, when the entire story is dropped on you. I have no reason to care for any of the characters so it didn't have the emotional impact as the devs were maybe hoping. The gameplay is repetitive as well, collect butterflies, activate the leaders in the area, learn a new skill and move on to the next area, repeat. It just felt shallow overall. (Spoilers here!): near the end of the game there is a chase sequence, which would have been tense, but you dont even get to control your character, he runs away on his own. It would have been more engaging if the player had at least some control over the character at this point. The visuals are doing the majority of the heavy lifting in this title, and it kind of comes up short in almost every other aspect, which is disappointing because I had high hopes for this one and I really wanted to love it, especially because I like to support indie studios. It is a short game at just under 3 hours, and I understand that its really difficult to create an emotionally gripping story with engaging gameplay and rich dialogue in that short play time. I wish there was a sideway thumb because this game doesn't deserve a thumbs down but falls a bit short of a full recommendation, so ill just loosely recommend it, if you can look past the points I've listed above.
Such a cute, cozy and fun platforming game that progressively gets more challenging as you go, making each level interesting! Would love to see more lore and backstory as well with the upcoming 2nd game
Such a well-made game from Vietnamese developers! The art style, music, and story are so soft and heartwarming <3 It really reminds me of a Studio Ghibli movie! The last part might be a bit frustrating for some people, but it's a fun challenge and not too difficult to get through. Great job! :D
