Beautiful art trapped in an incredibly shallow game
I don't want to bash a small indie studio for not making a giant, expensive, bombastic game, but the difference in quality between the art & music and... almost everything else is just jarring. The world is gorgeous to look at, and the hand-drawn art is honestly fantastic. Unfortunately, that's about where the good stuff ends. The gameplay is incredibly simplistic and super linear. There is basically no challenge and almost no thinking required. In fact, the game holds the player's hand to the point where it starts feeling condescending. For instance, you come across ladybugs that serve as platforms, but they fly away if you stand on them for too long. In other words, a platforming mechanic that's existed since the dawn of time. Yet they immediately tell you: "Be careful, we are easily startled!" ...as if you couldn't figure that out on your own. Later, two ladybugs alternate as platforms, meaning you have to jump before one disappears. Again, something most players would understand after about five seconds of trial and error. Thankfully, the game once again comes to the rescue with this invaluable line: "You first, then my turn!" ...sigh. Which brings me to probably the weakest part of the game: the writing. The game was made by a Vietnamese studio, so I obviously can't judge the original script, but the English translation is, to put it nicely, abysmal. At first, the dialogue at least tries to stay in-universe: "Her Majesty is right up ahead, but she's in a deep slumber. To wake her up, you need to light up the sacred engraving." After that, though, every NPC seems to forget they're living in a fantasy world and starts reading gameplay tips directly from the design document. For example: "Ah, the Old Beetle? To get to him, you must be able to jump twice in a row." "5 butterflies. It's time to learn a new skill." Followed immediately by: "Now that you can jump twice, you will be able to get past that cliff." ...which conveniently points out the only place left to go, just in case you somehow hadn't noticed. Then later: "5 butterflies. It's time to learn how to push." But my favorite line in this mystical fantasy world full of magical creatures has to be: "Cross the lake, and you will find that guy." (It is never specified who "that guy" actually is.) This game had so much potential. Visually, it could have been a short Ori-like experience. Instead, whoever was responsible for the gameplay and writing completely dropped the ball. The game is gorgeous to look at, but one I'd honestly rather experience as an animated film or a beautiful art book. You might as well watch it on Youtube. If you're six years old and have never played a 2D platformer before, or you don't care much about gameplay and just want to admire some gorgeous artwork, you'll probably have a good time. I'm neither of those, so I can't recommend it.

Hoa – Beautiful Painting, Questionable Platformer
As a Vietnamese player, I really wanted to love Hoa. Supporting a Vietnamese-made game is great. Pretending the game is amazing just because Vietnamese developers made it? Yeah... no. The Good: - Absolutely gorgeous hand-painted art. - Beautiful atmosphere with very obvious Studio Ghibli inspiration. - Music is relaxing and fits the world well. - Cute creatures everywhere. - It's nice seeing a Vietnamese indie project with this level of visual polish. The Bad: - The controls are janky as hell, especially jumping, grabbing vines and landing. - Platforming feels stiff rather than satisfying. - UI and some mechanics feel unfinished. - Most levels follow the same formula: explore, collect butterflies, unlock something, move on. - Puzzles are so simple my remaining two brain cells never had to communicate. - Almost no challenge. - The story is incredibly shallow and failed to hold my attention for more than five minutes. - Bosses barely feel like bosses; many encounters feel like the same mechanics wearing different clothes. - One of the few moments that could have tested everything you've learned becomes... a cutscene. And then the final section suddenly decides: "You enjoyed relaxing for the last few hours? Cool. Now enjoy weird camera tricks and reversed controls." Final Verdict: Hoa is a beautiful art project trapped inside a very average platformer. The artists absolutely cooked. The gameplay department apparently ordered delivery. 5/10 Support Vietnamese developers, absolutely. But support them by giving useful criticism too, not by pretending every Vietnamese game is automatically a masterpiece.
has a few bugs but i really liked it, the music is amazeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee made me so emotional ueueu
thank you devs please make more games like this
♡ TLDR ♡
HOA is a beautiful art piece coupled with lovely relaxing music - and this sadly, is where my praise must end.
♡ DETAILS ♡
I hate to have yet another negative review, but I just cannot recommend this game. With 2.7 hours playtime (and at least 40 minutes of non-progression playing with my cat or lost in the dark); $15 USD just does not feel worth the experience you get. If it was $5 total, maybe on sale for $3 - Id say - ok, sure - that seems fair... Not because I think peoples hard work shouldn't be compensated, but primarily because it fails at being anything other than artwork - and by the end, it somehow even failed at that by introducing asinine mechanics that simply take away from its beauty - had they been implemented well, perhaps I would have a better opinion.
♡ ART & SOUNDS ♡
Stunning art, cute animations, Lovely color pallet, and relaxing music.
♡ MOVEMENT & BUGS ♡
the movement seemed fine 80% of the time - then the other 20% my character would just - respond with the wrong actions to my inputs? I press right, she goes left? or I press jump, she runs right? it was weird, moments where the game hiccupped and it seemed like input delay, but it was inconsistent. I guess you can call it jank - but it was a bit odd. My controller has no issues with anything else - and it isn't like this is an intense game on the system... It also seemed that sometimes certain mechanics didn't function as intended all of the time, causing confusion on how to progress. Late in the game
In the underwater section in the late game, there is a Jetstream blocking your progression and a crab nearby. I stood on the crab probably 4 times and he never woke up - after wandering around for quite some time, I trod on him again and he woke and moved, allowing me to solve the puzzle and move on.
In another section (early in the game)
There is the 1st bluebell hook you need to grab and swing from - when you approach it, leaves spawn under it, but too far to jump up and get to the hook. I spent a few minutes trying to jump to it, over and over, till I was about to leave the area assuming I was missing some key ability - and just as I began to leave the area, the lady bugs spawned that you have to jump from to get up there. Had they spawned properly, I would have moved through the section without a thought easily - but since they didn't, I was left wandering around thinking I had missed something.
ALSO!!!! The one section that could have been the star of the show... was just turned into a cutscene? with nothing for you, the player to even do... it just played itself. How disappointing. Things like this are particularly rotten because you never know if you are the idiot - or the game just failed to do what it was supposed to do.
♡ DIFFICULTY & GAMEPLAY ♡
Starts out as the easiest game, requiring little to no brain work, making you think its more a low difficulty platformer focused solely on the art that would likely be good for kids, but then in the later stages it begins adding infuriating mechanics that just aren't fun and serve to annoy. Had the difficulty remained consistent, I would say this is probably a good intro game to platformers for young kids... but I cant with the later stages.
♡ MAP AND NAVIGATION ♡
Navigation was mostly easy, again; until you reach the later levels of the game where obnoxious mechanics are introduced and level sections were repeated. I did get lost for probably 20+ minutes unable to figure out that I was supposed to 'fly' underwater to reach seemingly unreachable spots after smearing my face across the walls in pitch black level geometry. Playing blind is not my idea of fun.
♡ STORY ♡
Pretty vague lacking inspiration, failed to capture my attention in the slightest. /)/) ( . .) ( づ♡
♡ FINAL THOUGHTS ♡
Once again, there are just better games out there, and life is too short to play mediocre ones. Honestly, just watch it on youtube.
Great for kids, but to easy and short. Pity, you get only around 4 h relaxed gaming.
