The best game for people who don’t have time. Maximum nonsense per minute. You drop into an adventure for 20 minutes, talk to a gun, ignore a psycho knife, watch enemies tell each other to frak off, and leave. Absolute fire.
High on Life feels like someone gave Rick and Morty unlimited budget and access to aliens, guns, and questionable life choices. Your guns never stop talking. The enemies never stop talking. The story is ridiculous, the humor is either the funniest thing you've ever heard or a crime against humanity and I spent way too much time listening to random NPC conversations instead of playing the game. 10/10. Lost brain cells, gained happiness.
Once the comedy wore off there wasn't a lot left to this game. Bosses provide a challenge but the repetitive gameplay loops make this a bore to play. I have no intention to return to this game after I finish it. It's not a bad game by any means, it just gets boring after a while.
Funny – Until It Isn’t
High On Life starts strong. The first few hours are genuinely good fun – the humor lands, the world is bizarre in the best way, and the central gimmick of talking guns is a real stroke of creativity. Those weapons, with their snarky comments and constant back-and-forth chatter, are easily the highlight of the whole experience and give the game a personality few shooters bother with. For a while, I was hooked. The problem is that it does not last. Just a few hours in you have essentially seen everything the game has to offer, and from that point on it becomes much more of the same. The jokes run dry, the novelty of the guns wears thin, and what was fresh starts to feel repetitive. The moment-to-moment shooting is competent but unremarkable, and the story underneath it all is mediocre – not enough to carry you once the comedy stops doing the heavy lifting. The result is a game that shows you its best hand early and then keeps replaying it.
Summary

Pros
✪ Creative premise – the talking guns are a genuinely clever idea ✪ Snarky, well-written weapon banter that gives the game real personality ✪ Funny and enjoyable for the first few hours
Cons
✪ Runs out of ideas fast – you get everything it offers within a couple of hours ✪ Repetitive once the novelty fades ✪ Jokes run dry and stop being funny ✪ Mediocre story that can’t carry the game on its own ✪ Merely average as a shooter
Rating: 5/10
An average FPS with a great sense of humor that it can’t sustain. The talking guns are a genuinely creative touch, but once the jokes dry up there is not enough beneath them to keep it enjoyable. Worth a look if the premise grabs you, but for me it wore out its welcome.
Yea this game is pretty fun but its short, so only buy it if its on sale ngl
This is a very fun game. It's comical and irreverent, and the gameplay is unique and I chuckled multiple times while playing. Most enjoyable.
A comedy FPS from the creators of Rick and Morty whose mileage will vary depending on how much you click with the game's humour. Play as your average human teen, caught up in an intergalactic drug cartel looking to harvest humanity as a new drug for alien consumption. Take on the mantel of bounty hunter, teaming up with a washed up mercenary and a set of talking guns in order to take down the G3 drug cartel, along with Garmantuous, the head of the cartel. Accept bounties from a bounty board in your family home - acting as your base - travelling to other worlds and locations via portal. Killing a bounty will net you a bundle of pesos and usually a new upgrade available to purchase at the pawn shop. Gameplay is a fairly average feeling set of FPS mechanics, moving from world to world fighting the same two sets of enemies over and over. You will collect four weapons over the course of the game, with a fifth being acquired at the end as a sort of superweapon. Start off with a pistol-style weapon that can launch enemies into the air with its secondary or move marked platforms, followed by a disc shooting shotgun for platforming, a machine pistol that is part sniper weapon and time slowing device, then a sort of grenade launcher style weapon that shoots little blue humanoid aliens that can mind control an enemy and short circuit electrical stations. Each of these weapons can get upgrades in terms of ammo capacity, secondary recharge rate, and alternate fire modes in the form of equipable mods that change the colour / overall look of the weapon. Your weapons are not the only upgrades you'll collect, grabbing a whip-like knife for traversal and stabbery, a dash, slide, and jump pack for reaching hidden treasure chests that are scattered throughout each zone. As mentioned, there are treasure chests scattered around each zone of a world which can be detected on your mini-radar. These chests will net you pesos, warp crystals, or collectable cards in the vein of the Garbage Pail Kids. Warp crystals can also be detected on your radar, usually found attached to mini-bases the enemy warps in on; trade these crystals for diskettes to warp in small bonus scenes at specific areas for additional comedy. Multiple B-movies play in full on your home television and one in a theatre you can warp in with crystals. Mentioned films include Tammy and the T-Rex, Blood Harvest, and Vampire Hookers; genuinely surprising me with the full frontal nudity in Blood Harvest. At the theatre you can view the B-movie Demon Wind in its entirety, all while three members of the popular YouTube channel RedLetterMedia commentate along with the movie. I really enjoy the work of Jay, Mike, and Rich Evans, so hearing them riff a movie Mystery Science Theater 3,000 style was a treat for me. The comedy of High on Life is going to be the main draw and determining factor of if you end up liking the game as a whole. There were a number of moments where I laughed, particularly with the pawn shop kid Jorb, but there really isn't any room to breathe when it comes to jokes; a constant barrage of commentary from NPCs, characters, and your weapons made me wish they would just shut up at times. There is a setting in the options to adjust how much enemies and your guns talk thankfully, making me wish I had used it more during my play through. If you're not a huge fan of Rick and Morty / Justin Roiland, then your mileage is going to vary greatly in terms of enjoyment. Graphically, the game is quite nice to look at, although it is what I would describe as not being migraine friendly when it comes to the liberal use of colour in the cartoonish design of the world and characters. The soundtrack isn't really anything to write home about, although the voice acting is pretty on point. I had a pretty okay time with High on Life; it wasn't mind blowing or anything like that and I did end up getting it on a pretty deep sale. If you're able to get it for 75% off and are a fan of Rick and Morty style humour, I'd say go for it. Alternatively, there is a demo out for High on Life 2 at the writing of this review if you want to get a taste of what it would be like. I'm not a gamer that typically likes games like this, but it's pulled me in. I'm a huge Rick and Morty fan, so if you go in looking for that style of humor, you'll be satisfied. PROS: Funny, interesting, plenty to do, looks great, great mechanics. CONS: NO MAP... Good luck keeping track of ♥♥♥♥ you can't access yet, because you don't have the necessary equipment/skills. You'll walk past it, understand you'll never remember to come back, because you can't mark it on any map, and try to sleep that night. That's pretty much it. Conclusion: If this game had a map that gave you the ability to mark points of interest, allowing you to revisit cleared zones to 100% them, it would be a 10/10.
Kinda meh, it gets old fast. It's not horrible but it drags on and reuses the same jokes that weren't particularly funny to begin with. It is the same gameplay over and over and over though, run while endlessly left clicking to shoot with basically no pay off at the end of each gig and the forced Rick and Morty style humor is quite stale in 2026.
Oh boy. I really wanted to like the game, very colorful, the Guns are very interesting mechanically and okay on comedy, but everything else around it is horrible. FIrst off enemies arent smart or tacitcal, they are just bullet sponges, so you take the highest damage weapon and start firing, there is no strategy in switching out guns unless there is a puzzle in the arena itself that you want to interact with. Secondly, the NPCs are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying, they just keep on and on and on and on with their bit, talking for 10 minutes straight about the same ♥♥♥♥. Its funny the first hour, then it just becomes annoying. Finally the Maps are... mostly linear, with lots of places that are just empty expect hidden tresure chests that are a pain to find because the radar is useless and so is the scan. So good luck trying to collect everything. Movement is crisp and fun, expect the Jetpack is slow as ♥♥♥♥ and ruins any fun you can have with the run and gun and the hookshot and melee combos. Honestly, its amazing, i usually complete games 100% so losing me not even 8 hours in without active frustration is amazing, its just boring. The only games I drop are the frustrating ones and the ones that are so boring that I can't stand it. Somehow this one made it into the second category despite being so damn colorful.
