Okay, so let me first of all say that this is one of my all time most favourite games EVER! It is incredibly satisfying to play, the story is incredible. The characters are unique and really awesome! Also the artstyle is superb. And on top of all of that it's not just a rhythm game, but an action rhythm game. One of the most awesome combinations of genres possible (that is, if you ask me :3). However the game does still have some annoyances, some odd design desicions that can be rather frustrating at times. So here are my points of criticism/feedback: 1. The audio calibration wizard sadly kinda sucks. It's quite hard to actually get it adjusted properly. Only after playing the game for ~80 hours I had finally figured out what I need to look out for to be able to adjust it correctly. A small thing that could easily improve that a lot is to show early/late in the calibration wizard. 2. Checkpoints are allways set BEFORE cutscenes, or the cutscenes just replay every time if you quit to hideout and restart from the checkpoint. Which you do sometimes want to do if you're going for S-Ranks/highscores. To be fair, most of the proper longer cutscenes are skippable, but it still ends up being rather annoying frequently. 3. There's a cheering SFX when you're at S score multiplier, that is confusingly off-beat for some reason and there's no seperate slider/option to turn it down. After playing the game for dozens of hours I eventually just started blocking it out/ignoring it automatically, but eh... 4. There is no way of disabling tutorials that pop up at certain points of a playthrough. All the longer interactive ones are thankfully skippable, but there's still the regular popups. And two smaller ones: 5. The additional rhythm visualization doesn't stay enabled between stages/quitting and reloading checkpoints. 6. The scoring system is quite odd on any difficulty that isn't Rhythm Master (aka the highest difficulty). On Rhythm Master it's all good and fun and feels intentional. But on lower difficulties (which you gotta play through at some point if you wanna go for 100%) it straight up feels like the devs don't want you to play the game properly? (If you're going for S Rank specifically). It's really odd. Despite all this though, as I mentioned above it still is one of my all time most favourite games EVER! And I'm not saying that lightly. It's an abslutely awesome game! It's right up there next to Astral Chain and Halo: Reach, and those games have Legendary status for me.
2nd time playing this masterpiece
Played a tiny bit of this on Game Pass when it first came out & thought it was super cool. Ended up canceling GP after all the BS going on at Microsoft & unfortunately forgot about this game. So when I saw it pop up on sale for $15, I had to get it. Only a couple hours in & I absolutely love it! While playing, I kept thinking how crazy it was that Microsoft let this IP go & closed Tango. They have very few IPs that got this level of critical praise, and they're heavily lacking in new IPs / IPs with personality & style like this. Everything they go for is the same mature, realistic, AAA serious stuff. Whether it's Halo, Call of Duty, Doom, Gears, etc. it's all targeting the same audiences over & over again. They don't see the value in expanding their reach. If a game isn't a mega hit, it's not worth it. But because of that, their audience slowly shrinks & shrinks. People enjoy playing a VARIETY of games. People don't play dozens of live service games... they play 1 or 2. Genre variety matters, and a game like this, regardless of sales, is critical for building up a brand that appeals to more than just a dwindling crowd playing the same handful of games. There's a reason Nintendo still makes Fire Emblem, Xenoblade & Metroid games, despite them all selling less than 3 million units on average. Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Smash, etc. may sell tens of millions, but it's important to appeal to more people to grow your install base. I know this is a weird tangent, less about the game & more about the state of Microsoft / Xbox, but playing through a unique experience like this, I couldn't help but constantly think of how short-sighted that company is. Thank you Krafton for re-opening Tango & saving this game. Can't wait to play more!
