Received this product for free from the developer. I didn't want to leave a negative review for this game, but there are several reasons why I should (and am). Typically, a game like this would be right up my alley. A game about logistics and production lines and efficiency. Also it's on a sphere and I'm a sucker for spheres. On the surface it looks great and fun. However, when getting into it a lot of the problems show through. Pros: -A rather relaxing logistics experience, good for if you want to kill an hour or so without any gameplay stress. -Trains. -Spheres. Did I mention I like spheres? -Calm relaxing background music. Cons -There seems to be no real goal aside from completing the steam achievements and getting on the steam leaderboards. If neither of these things matter to you, then you're going to feel like you're going nowhere. -There is a metric for how much you're producing, but there's no real cost management here. Rails and trains are free to build, there's no maintenance costs. And as a result there's really no point to the economy aside from getting on the steam leaderboard. -There is a resource called Moon Crystals, that are meant to be researched. As far as I can tell, researching these moon crystals does nothing except for give you another resource to manage. It unlocks a single steam achievement but otherwise does nothing. For all of the cons I mentioned, the full price of the game is $17, at the time of writing shortly after launch it's $10.19. If I had bought this game for either of those prices, I would have refunded it. However that's not to say that this game is without promise. It could very well be worth the money one day, if it would do things like add a use for the economy, moon crystals, etc. Simply put, steam achievements and leaderboards are not compelling enough reasons to do what the game wants you to do, and that's really the only motivations at play here.
Do you like trains? Do you like optimizing networks and making trend lines go up? Did you wish Mini Metro was also a simple, Euro-boardgamey economic simulation? Do you appreciate an unusual level of fidelity in orbital mechanics? Get this game.
This is a nice prototype that shows potential, but this is not a game. In under an hour I got to see everything it has to offer (what is left is maybe another hour of grind to get all achievements). This hour was mildly entertaining in terms of learning the mechanics, but this is pretty much the only kind of entertainment Hexa Trains can offer. You build train paths from mines to factories to other factories, and you schedule the trains going along these paths. You are not constrained on resources for your paths or trains. You are not constrained on time. You are not constrained on space. You have no goals. You can go anywhere, you can do anything. And you expect there to be some purpose for it all, but there just isn't any. So in the end, Hexa Trains is an okay metaphor for life, but a bad game. The developer has stated in forums that they will not be working on this any further, so I absolutely discourage anyone from spending money on this, as this is nowhere near a finished game, and looks like it never will be. And that's a pity.
Gameplay/Tutorial: https://youtu.be/eRH2lPHmTuY Pros: - Simple to understand - complex train system can be created or simple routes - You can travel to the moon Cons: - No fast forward I can't really write any other cons since this is a new game. I'm hoping that they add new trains, missions modes, and more! Gameplay/Tutorial: https://youtu.be/eRH2lPHmTuY
This felt like a prototype with programmer art put for sale on the store page, with the promise of it being worked on, yet never updated due to poor sales (check the forums). Sadly, dead in the water, and cannot recommend it.
Fun and relaxing game where you can build tracks to connect different industries. I love that you can aso get to the moon. Here is some gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX3n8e98Utw
A wonderfully relaxing and beautiful game about trains, logistics and space travel....I want to recommend it but;
REVIEW
So the game has a limited tutorial which teaches the basics. How to rotate the planet, create a NEW train, how to lay tracks and add stops to a ROUTE. Then it drops you into a game. Basically Farms -> Bakery -> (Cities & Space Station) (Iron Ore - Coal - Copper Ore) -> Smelter -> Warehouse -> (Cities - I think?) It doesn't really matter because the primary...no ONLY thing you need to do is get food to the Space Station. The Space Station takes food to the Moon (which is really cool) then that food is distributed to the Moon Base, which converts Moon Rock into Moon Crystals...With me so far? Good. Spaceship takes the moon Crystals back to Earth (or whatever planet) and you need to distribute them to the University who do....Absolutely nothing with them???? So what is the point of the game??? Search me, I have no idea either, which is a MASSIVE shame because this game could be epic if; Trains and tracks cost money (you have no money). The economy was driven in some way. Your objective is to continue to explore the galaxy...Mars, Jupiter, who knows.....That would be excellent. Multiple Planets producing Individual specific planetary goods and then you setup the space routes for supply. I would buy into that 100%. But this game, as lovely as it is (I LOVE the music) just goes nowhere and you reach that point a little too quickly. If this was EA with the promise of what I mentioned above, plus a few other missing features (delete train, name train, etc..) & I would 100% recommend this game, but right now as it is I just cannot recommend it at this price. Drop the price, or expand the game if you want my recommendation & what you have already is excellent so please expand it.
Hexa Trains is an interesting and relaxing indie game which you can play through in a few hours. Controls and graphics are not on AAA level, but on the other hand this game allows you to explore an original gameplay concept.
Interesting Concept
You get a planet (+moon) with fixed buildings on it, and have to build tracks and deploy trains in order to connect the buildings and grow the planets economy. There's no concept of money in this game - tracks and trains are free, and your economy doesn't grant you any currency to spend. Instead you get a score for your productivity level. Personally I don't know any game with a similar concept, so I found Hexa Trains quite interesting to explore.
Relaxed
There are no enemies, time pressure, or even currencies to run out of. You can not loose in this game, and that makes it super relaxed. If you are looking for a challenge, you can still try to reach a high score.
Easy Leaderboard
It's easy to get a top ranking on the leaderboard if that's your kind of thing, because there's no noteworthy competition (yet?). In fact I got to 1st place on the leaderboard in my second round of Hexa Trains. If you want some tips, I distilled my experience into a guide here.
Easy Achievements
It's also easy to complete all achievements in a few hours. If you need help on the looping achievement, the Steam discussions have you covered.
This is a really great foundation for a game. And as much as have enjoyed it, I feel that there could be more. I'm hoping this is an early release and the devs have more planned.
