This is an awful game, Boring, pointless, difficult to control and with some bafflingly bad design decisions. I've stuck with this far more than it deserves and I didn't enjoy any of it. Do not waste your time or money. The core gameplay here is that you control a shiny white circle, which you move around various indistinguishable labyrinths using the mouse. You are followed by a collection of let's call them fish. The aim is to solve some basic puzzles and defeat some enemies in order to get to the exit on each level. Fairly basic. The puzzle solving is uninspired but it generally works. The problem is with 'combat', and with your followers. Combat consists of your white followers fighting black fish. I got about half way through the game, and have no idea what the mechanics of this are. I certainly don't feel like there's any real strategy beyond having as many as possible. You have very little control over your followers beyond them trying to follow you, so every combat encounter was either trivial (when I was given huge numerical superiority) or luck-based (when not). That is not enjoyable gameplay. It get's worse, too. You often need to maneouvre your followers past obstacles that can kill them. On later levels, this is necessary to keep enough followers to win enemy encounters. But the fact your followers are AI controlled can make this very irritating. The best strategy is usually to inch slowly past danger when possible. This minimizes the possibility of your fish overshooting or veering away into danger. It is also boring. Worse, though, are situations where there are strong currents or simultaneous enemy encounters. In the former, the lack of control makes gameplay almost entirely luck. In the latter, the unreliable AI makes it completely so. But it was none of this that finally made me quit in disgust. I was about half way through the game, when I got stuck in a location where I had no escape but also no way to die. That is already bad design. But I thought it would be okay, I'd just restart from the most recent checkpoint. I'd already overcome a difficult boss fight, and most of what I'd lost was pretty easy. Except... this game has no words anywhere. The menus exclusively use symbols, and on several occasions I had made the wrong selection because of this. That had been a pointless irritation, but ultimately only cost me a few seconds. This time, I failed to guess what an icon did, and accidentally restarted the whole level. After a dozen attempts to get past that boss encounter again, I decided my time was too valuable to continue wasting on this thing. The lack of words has significant effects on the game's story. The effort has obviously been made to tell a story through images alone. No words, and no expressiveness on any of the entities. And what was that story? As best as I could understand, some evil black fish attacked the white fish because they're evil. Wow. I got most of the meaning I did by using the game's achievements, which at least told me something about my actions. Some ideas are not done very often for a reason. Oh, but the achievements won't unlock if you play on a Mac, as I did originally. The sad thing is that while this game made me angry when it wasn't making me bored, there was clearly a lot of effort put into it. Maybe people who really like experimental story telling might enjoy this. Fans of games where you only indirectly control your forces, such as the RTS genre, might be more tolerant of the controls. But to me, this is a failed experiment and should be treat as such.
Tags: Platformer Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Kind of the ancestor to Spermination. Mechanically it works alright but the appeal is limited. Removed for declutter. http://store.steampowered.com/app/363460/Spermination/ This is a Unity Engine Object Routing/Platformer Hybrid. You navigate protag from beginning to end area, navigating through a maze and picking up power ups along the way. Xbox360 pad detected and working smoothly. Limbo aesthetic and underwater style controls work well for the title coming together into a thin but respectable offer for simple gameplay. Despite the simplicity and appeal, the audio could had received more attention, the repetitive nature of the gameplay was not broken off with variety in visual assets and levels could feel like they dragged on for too long. Especially with the very limited field of vision and the lack of a minimap. Conclusion: Would not go out of my way to recommend but was not really a hater either. Ultimately what kills this game is the oversaturation of the genre and the limited appeal of the featureset, narrative and mechanics.
I can't explain how uncomfortable this game is. The idea of good and bad "swimmers" and good and bad "eggs". I can't unsee it. Beyond that traumatizing horror, the game is boring with the same mechanics over and over. It's all attrition. Did you collect enough to make it to the next level? Did you unlock the exit? Did you kill the evil? Did you watch the same cut screen over and over because it won't let you skip it? Did you find the white vs black theme uncomfortable?
