This game aged like milk. The controls are incredibly bad, it's frustrating. Its basically just an awful Limbo clone with guns and zombies. Don't bother, save your bucks.
I had this game sitting in my library for quite some time and decided to finally give it a chance about a week ago. At first, I struggled to understand the negative reception. While the animations are noticeably rough, the game features a strong visual style and some appealing artistic direction, which initially made it seem more promising than its reputation suggested. However, as I spent more time with it, the underlying issues became increasingly apparent. The most significant problem is the lack of depth. Gameplay feels repetitive and fails to evolve in any meaningful way, which quickly leads to boredom. The story, which the game presents as a central and important element, is disappointingly basic. It follows a familiar and overused premise—a zombie outbreak combined with a search for someone important—without adding anything new or engaging to the formula. From a technical standpoint, the experience is also frustrating. There is a slight but noticeable delay in the controls that negatively impacts responsiveness, making moment-to-moment gameplay feel sluggish. In addition, the game suffers from a variety of bugs, some of which are disruptive enough to break immersion. Visually, the game is somewhat inconsistent. While the overall graphic design and art direction are commendable, the heavy use of dark environments creates visibility issues. At times, it becomes difficult to clearly see your character, especially when blended into shadowy areas, which further detracts from the gameplay experience. In conclusion, while the game has a few redeeming qualities—primarily its art style it ultimately falls short due to shallow gameplay, an unremarkable story, and technical shortcomings. I wouldn’t say I hated it, but I also can’t recommend it. For me, it remains a fairly average and forgettable zombie game. 4.5/10

A very good looking game with terribly cringe writing and finicky, unrealiable gameplay. The platforming is either super simplistic or trial and error. You either can't see where to go, or did things in the wrong order. The controls aren't reliable enough for quick gameplay or timed sequences, because Randal will decide which direction he's looking, and what kind of jump he wants to perform at any given moment, not you the player. There's much more to say but I've spent most of my energy on getting to the end, and the ending and the twist telegraphed hours ago drained the rest.
Locked up multiple times
got to a door and I couldn't figure out how to break it. Got bored of trying and moved on.
Actual score: 3/10 (bad) Actual play time (off-platform, Xbox 360): 6 hours (I aimed to get 100%...) So look, this is a game had a lot of potential, but there's so damn much that holds it back. For the story, its a great start, but it crashes rather than leaves something great, especially since the MC could've clearly escaped too. As a platformer, it leaves a lot to be desired, especially with buggy gamepad controls, which I did at least verify to be the same on PC. For the mechanics, it'll usually introduce something, then neglects it soon after its introduced, so you'll be stuck with a slingshot for half the game, that you can't effectively use elsewhere. Same with the fire axe and the guns. The game can be easily beaten while firing not a single bullet at a "Shadow", especially since killing em means nothing when more continue to show up after you get a kill. For the cutscenes, they just look like those rough sketches they use to set up scenes for animations. It may have been a stylistic choice for the devs, but it just makes it feel cheap in the end, and cheats us out of some good scenes...
Deadlight is a side-scrolling survival game that stands out through its atmosphere, visual identity, and strong sense of tension. Set in a ruined world shaped by fear, isolation, and collapse, it presents a version of the zombie apocalypse that feels more reflective than explosive. Instead of focusing on nonstop combat, the game builds its identity around movement, vulnerability, and the constant pressure of staying alive in an environment that never feels safe. One of the game’s greatest strengths is its presentation. The silhouette-based art style gives Deadlight a distinct visual character, turning ruined streets, abandoned buildings, and collapsing interiors into scenes that are both bleak and memorable. The environments communicate danger without relying on excessive detail, and the cinematic framing helps the journey feel dramatic from beginning to end. This artistic direction gives the game a personality that separates it from many other post-apocalyptic titles. Gameplay in Deadlight is built around platforming, timing, and resource management rather than empowerment. The protagonist is not designed to feel unstoppable, and that choice works in the game’s favor. Encounters often feel tense because every mistake carries weight, whether the player is escaping a trap, avoiding a horde, or deciding whether a fight is even worth the risk. The result is an experience where survival feels earned rather than guaranteed. At the same time, the game is not without flaws. Some mechanics can feel stiff, especially when precision is required under pressure, and a few sections rely on trial and error more than they should. Combat, while intentionally limited, does not always feel satisfying, and the controls can occasionally work against the pacing instead of supporting it. These issues do not ruin the experience, but they do prevent the game from reaching its full potential. Narratively, Deadlight succeeds because it keeps its tone serious and focused. It tells a personal survival story rather than trying to overwhelm the player with excessive lore or spectacle. The emotional weight comes from the world itself and from the sense that every step forward is difficult. While the writing is not especially complex, it fits the game’s structure well and supports the bleak, exhausted mood that defines the entire experience. Overall, Deadlight is a stylish and thoughtful survival platformer that leaves an impression through mood, restraint, and visual design. It may not be the most mechanically refined game in its genre, but it understands how to create tension and maintain emotional pressure throughout the journey. For players who appreciate atmospheric games with a darker tone and a more vulnerable approach to survival, Deadlight remains a memorable and worthwhile experience.
