It's like if CAVE came back from the dead and made an actual good new DoDonPachi game.
A game that comes from a clear passion for and understanding of the shmup genre. It has a continue system that makes the game easier but still requires you to learn the game. No credit feeding!
it’s basically crack! I’m relatively new to shmups so really really appreciate the tutorials! Music is a banger, stages are awesome, and the patterns are juicy. Have the game on two platforms and really became a favourite! Just buy it and don’t even think about it.

The more I played the expert mode the more I thought "Hey, this Bog guy's a real jerk!".
This is simply a case of Good Game but not enough to call it a full product. Feels like it was rushed out of the gate. I do like the base game mode but i wish there were more modes with different collectibles and scoring mechanics. The roguelike mode just doesn't do anything for me. Look at Ketsui Deathtiny for example. Those new collectibles, scoring mechanics, systems and modes is what i am talking about. No way to save replays or view them either? I will change my review to a positive if the dev(s) adds new interesting modes to the game. Until then this is a great concept that is lacking in content. The roguelike mode is just not my thing. I want to talk about the great music and fluid gameplay but that is evident in any and every video you can watch on youtube. I am just here sharing my complains so that the game becomes patched and more enhanced and complete in a future date. One can always hope, right!
Gunvein is a very fun game. On the game play front it is very well done. My two biggest issues are the score play and level themes. Every stage looks the exact same, and it is hard to differentiate between them. Overall the game looks pretty generic, and there is no explanation to what your fighting. The other issue I have is from the score play. There is a lot of boss milks, and it makes it very boring to score. Other than those two points the game is very fun, and has a lot of modes to choose from.
The more I play of this title the more I enjoy it and notice new things. One ship is like Ray storm / Ray crisis, one ship is like Dodonpachi type B, and the last ship reminds me of Zero Ranger a lil bit with the charge shot. All fun to play. Gameplay wise def reminds me of Dodonpachi and Crimson clover. If you like those there's no reason you wont like this. Solid 7/8 out of 10 shooter
As a casual enjoyer of shooters, this hits the spot. Scoring mechanic is very satisfying and the ships have unique play styles. Music is banging, which is always required. Haven't tried to roguelike mechanic but the arcade mode alone is worth the purchase. Will keep playing this one over time.
It's fine, but I wouldn't call it a beginner shmup as suggested by the reddit shmup community this is due to the level of difficulty present for Normal "Mild" Mode. It just feels like too much juggling of weapons, lives, bullets, bullet speed, boss bullet patterns that seem to peak in difficulty midway thru the game before tapering off, then becoming really stupid again at the final phase of the last boss. The Tutorial is praised by some in the community, yet I didn't find much there that couldn't be found in a quick youtube video on "How to get better at Shmups," but hey, it's here if anyone is brand spanking new. Also, looking online some ppl can't even pass it, and I understand why because there is a slightly confusing bit where you have to lead the enemy bullets into a bucket that is swaying left and right at the bottom of the screen. I must admit the objective confused me for about a minute or two. The Challenge Missions could have used a few easier missions to clear. Again, I kept hearing this shmup was beginner friendly. The challenges are gonna require a bit more effort than I want to give given that they are either tied to mastering the scoring mechanics, or they require amazeballs dodging to finish the higher difficulties. Like toss me a couple bones to motivate me, ya know? And guess whatelse is tied to completing the challenges? CONTINUES. ...So let me get this straight. You basically, have to master the game to get these continues. To then use in Arcade mode which if you've mastered the Bosses on Intense & Expert, then you aren't going to need those continues. LMAO and cry me a river, but what kind of stupid game design is that? I did 1CC Arcade Mild on my 2nd try, but I play this genre from time to time, so no surprise there. 1CC'd Mild Arrange on about my 5th try w/only 2 deaths, but I still retain that this isn't the most beginner friendly shmup, and I believe that is due to the lack of difficulty ramp-up. I beat Intense Mode up to the final boss with a 1CC, but the final phase of the final boss kept beating me with like inklings of life so I basically gave up after like 50 tries (partly a skill issue / partly I would jack up at the first phase boss then perfect run until final phase and just bad luck & blinking my eyes), so I cut the fps down by 15fps (45fps) so I could route the final bullet pattern of the final boss bc I honestly couldn't tell what was going on even tho I saw it about 15 times at full speed. Anyways, I completed Intense Mode. I have now completed a scoring mission challenge and that was fun, but again, the ppl who need Continues to complete standard mode are the ones who need continues, not freaking hardcore, pissed off, longtime shmup players like me, so again awful game design choice there. Lives & Bombs are capped at 3. Well, I guess you can earn a shield, maybe? Anyways, the game would be a cake walk if they wouldn't have capped that. Again poor design choice imo that the game is such a cakewalk until the final bosses where stacking would be useful. The difficulty on Arcade & Rogue is almost the same on level 1 as level 5. It's a very poor difficulty plateau that I can't remember the last time I experienced it on this scale. Imagine walking across Nebraska. Corn. Corn. Cooorn. More Corn. Corn. Corn. Corn. The game is also designed with GameMaker so even with a 9070xt and 5900x , I still get slow down. Can't say I'm complaining too much as it helps out from time to time ha! This shmup also cramps my hand more than usual for a shmup so that sucks, but I'll toss on a pair of compression gloves and maybe that'll solve that issue. Well, those are my negatives, check out other reviews for a more positive take, or check out the other negative reviews for more in-depth issues bc most of them are spot on. I'm going to change my personal review to NOT Recommend due to poor difficulty balancing and the levels all muddling together, however, I'll leave the Steam review as a Positive for the sake of the genre.
