Absolute master class in the shmup genre, a game I would recommend to anyone interested in getting into the genre-- especially those who think they don't like it. This one teaches you to how play and will quickly have you hooked for life. So clever, fast paced, made with so much soul, and a KILLER soundtrack. Extremely fair and fun at the skill floor and truly relentless at the skill ceiling, offering a challenge that will put any (non-shmup) game you have thought of as "hard" to shame. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up, absolutely worth full price. The only modern shmup that even comes close is Blue Revolver, but I think I prefer GunVein!
Good shooter!

Gunvein is about as good as it gets. The bomb heavy scoring system encourages aggressive play, while the restriction on hoarding lives keeps you always on your toes. The music and visuals are excellent. Lots of fun to be had with the challenge modes and arrange. This game really just does everything right, its one of the few modern shmups that I feel not just meets, but surpasses the quality of many of the great arcade shmups including those made by Cave. Gunvein masterfully achieves everything it sets out to do and is an absolute must play for any fans of the genre.
Outstanding!
BOMBAAAA
If you’ve ever liked an arcade game or an action rogue-like. This is the game for you!
A game that comes from a clear passion for and understanding of the shmup genre. It has a continue system that makes the game easier but still requires you to learn the game. No credit feeding!
one of the shmups of all time (buy it)
I've very much enjoyed my time with Gunvein!! The production and presentation is excellent, with adrenaline pumping music, satisfying explosions, interesting enemy and bullet pattern design. As a casual shmup player, I can't comment on the skill ceiling but for a dad of two with limitted gaming time, there's a lot here to chew on with satisfying, short play sessions. I also like the "capping" of resources (lives, bombs) and the "bomb to score" mechanic, it really pushes you to use the stuff the game is giving you rather than save it up. I particularly appreciate the hand holding in the "mission mode", which teaches you the basics and some advance techniques (some that I didn't know before like "bullet retreaming"!) as well as some quickly playable/repeatable score and boss rush challenges. I don't know if I'd recommend this as someone's very first shmup (maybe Jamestown and Devil Blade Reboot might be better places to start?) but it's a definite contender. These are excellent features that I hope other designers pick up. I haven't gotten beyond "Mild" difficulty or explored the "rogue lite" game mode but looking forward to exploring those!
Highway Chaos is the best shmup level theme I've ever heard
