Plays like a PS2-era game. Feels awesome to obliterate hordes of enemies. You can unlock Brandon Heat from the anime.
So, if you're expecting as AAA Title masterpiece, you will be disappointed. But PLEASANTLY disappointed. This game offers a fun from a long forgotten era of older PS2 and PS3 games. All combat, quirky dialogue and cutscenes, and a story that takes the backburner before the action... this game is very fun and enjoyable. Honestly, this is my first introduction into the Gungrave series. I wasn't even aware of the prior games, and because of the silly dialogue, cool gameplay, and some plot, I am gonna be seeking out the other gungrave games just to experience them. This is a unique experience and I think anyone who enjoys DMC style combat, resident evil levels of dialogue, and a semi serious but also taking fun portrayal of the story, this is a game you can spend some time on. IT can be repetitive, so I would recommend taking frequent breaks to minimalize that. But this is definitely a game you should pick up on sale or G 2 A, and give it a try.
There's a good game buried under here, there really is. First off, there's so much to love: the arcade score-chasing gameplay; plethora of skills to acquire, the ability to kick a giant rocket at your enemies, and a jiggly-jawed skull in your UI that yells "Woo-Hoo-Hoo!" when you do something cool. But sooner-or-later, you'll find that that red-eyed skeleton is having much more fun than you are playing Gungrave GORE. OK, that's a bit harsh, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have fun with Grave n' the gang. I just think the game has two glaring issues that make it hard to recommend for most, and a neutral to negative for me. At it's core, GORE wants you to chase continuous hit combos throughout the level to reach that tasty S-rank. So much so it puts destructible elements in-between battle arenas to pad out your hit count. But the levels are labyrinthine, generic-looking, or both. So much so, that you often lose your way, and that combo. I imagine they want you to replay levels to memorization to get the best score. But the arenas are just long enough, at 8-10 minutes each, to discourage that notion. Plus, there are just too many levels. Which brings me to my second main gripe of the game: there's just too much of it. If it were meant to be a balls-to-the-wall action arcade game that wants you to replay it, it should have half of its 32 levels. And if it wants to be a serious, story-driven action drama with lore-filled cutscenes, the gameplay should have more depth. It's a game that doesn't know what it wants to do and we all suffer for it.
Dumbgrave… More? I’ll start off saying I got this at a deeeeep discount and if you’re in the mood for something like this, that’s the way to go. This game still would have been clunky, janky and goofy in the Xbox 360 era that it absolutely looks, sounds and feels like it came directly out of, despite just being released a couple years back. The game lacks a certain amount of polish to the point you can actively feel the publishers pushing it out to market way too early. There are countless invisible walls with jank galore of all sorts, the combat and movement overall feels unbearably slow in a way the vibe of the game seems to want to directly contradict. This game very badly wants to be Devil May Cry, or rather DMC, the obnoxious, less respected little brother from again the 360 era. The levels start with “Kick Their A*ses” and stage 3 introduces giant c*m monster enemies, not to mention that I head the phrase “die f*cker” layered over dozens of enemies at once on repeat at my most generous underestimation about 10 billion times by the end of the intro level. Even then, the combat in DMC still blows this out of the water. The big dumb coffin weapon that the very edgy anime boy protagonist lugs around has like 4 moves, making it feel like a cool-looking massive paperweight which causes you to move at a bumbling slow pace with one of the most belabored looking jumps I’ve seen in a game. There is a hilarious Indiana Jones trap that has to move so slowly to account for this movement pace that I almost died laughing, I could repeatedly spam the “stand still and spin around to look cool and kill everything” button, toss half a dozen guys into it and it would have moved about 5 feet, it even came back later in the level and I didn’t even notice until the incessantly screeching radio character said “HURRY” and I looked back to see it about a mile away. The voice acting is what I'm guessing to be the result of the direction being "yell everything and never shut up" or a no second takes policy in combination with either poor translation or writing for some of the best bad voice acting I've heard in a larger budget game in years. I muted voice audio and the game instantly became more tolerable. I also find it funny that the main character is essentially just Alucard from Hellsing with a horrible barber and none of the traits that make him a good or memorable character, aside from ripping off his entire aesthetic but worse and only speaking in awkward revolver spins before and after everything that happens for every lazy cutscene following the only high effort initial one. That being said, it’s fun for what it is, what it is, would be very dumb. But it’s the kinda dumb where your gun spawns a bullet 5 times the size of the gun itself which is for some reason designed to be kicked at guys. Or you can use your mele coffin to chain yank a guy for a meat shield and then throw him at another guy so hard that they both explode into a cartoonish bouncing pile of disembodied limbs. I’d call it a 6/10 like 15 years ago, but if that’s your vibe, here it is lol.
Gungrave G.O.R.E
Ты- one man army.
hurt my thumbs levels massively overstay their welcome sloppy Unreal Engine graphics (should've kept the PS2 games' style) its pretty fun doe. the numbers go up!
the vibe for this is the type of person who grew up watching edgy anime while having biker parents who drive harley davidson motorcycles
Super fun and amazing gameplay
