I really like the idea behind this game and I love the pixel graphics, but GrubDash Driver is unfortunately lacking in many aspects when it comes to its gameplay and controls.
Incorrect control mapping for controllers
I've played the game using both keyboard and controllers (Playstation), and I've noticed two things: 1. playing using the keyboard is a bit hard (not as smooth) during the driving bit of the gameplay, and 2. the mapping for the buttons on my PS4 controller vs the ones shown on the screen is different. The dev/s have mixed up the "X" and the "O" buttons. For the Xbox controller, the "A" and "B" buttons are bound incorrectly too.
Repetitive gameplay with very little content and variety
As another reviewer has pointed out, the game is pretty interesting when you start playing it, but after just 40+ minutes, I already felt like I've seen everything the game has to offer. The images in the mini-games are basically the same, especially the ones for pick-up, and there's just no variety. Even the dialogue option is fairly limited - a quick background here: in this game, you're expected to greet your customer and make some small talk (of some sort). The trick here is to remember which dialogue option you've used before (out of the 4 choices) so you don't use the same stuff again. However, considering that these are different customers, why would they notice (and hence, decide not to give you a cash tip) if you used the same greeting for every customer?
A GPS navigation system that could have been more helpful
What's the point of having GPS when you still have to get down from your car and search for the shop/restaurant in question manually by foot? The GPS isn't very accurate either - there's at least 1 white box - these boxes are supposed to represent a shop/restaurant - that turned out to be nothing in the game world. The GPS also takes a while to boot up... but why though? The year is 2020; not 2000.
Street signs pointing in the wrong direction
The delivery part is just made unnecessarily frustrating mainly because the street signs that are supposed to help me find the house is sometimes are pointing in the wrong direction, especially if the street in question is vertical rather than horizontal. Personally, the house numbers don't seem all too "randomized" to me since they do fit within the range of the numbers that the street signs show. Maybe the reviewers who pointed this out didn't know about the street signs? Shrugs. ---------------------------
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5qM5ogVjNw ---------------------------
There's no point in the game where you can refer to the order details
This is important since during the home delivery part of the gameplay, you're required to remember the name of the person who made the order. If I happen to forget the name, I'm basically screwed and will lose out on some tips. I think I should be able to whip out my in-game phone and check the order details if I'm willing to lose some seconds/minutes on the timer.
The driving bit of the gameplay isn't as responsive or smooth as I'd like
This part is fairly okay, albeit being a bit frustrating because I don't feel like my car responded to my controls as smoothly or as rapidly as I'd like, and that it feels like the game intentionally spawns obstacles right in front of me whenever I boosted my car. I'd also like to point out that for some weird reason, my car will sometimes "drift" by itself over to a different lane even when my thumb is off my controller. This doesn't happen if I played on the keyboard.
There's no real end goal here
You'll just make deliveries, earn cash, upgrade your stats and your vehicles, and also to purchase items to decorate your home. There's no story to advance. --- That being said, despite being a sub-par Groober, I still made good cash and was able to buy a couple of (cheaper) items for my home after doing just 3 deliveries. Due to this, the grind might not be as bad if you're determined to buy everything the game has to offer. For me, I just don't feel that drive to do so. Oh and a quick tip, if you're playing using the keyboard and mouse, I'd recommend using the mouse during the Preparation and the Freshness mini-games - you'll be able to respond faster.
Overall
Despite having a cool concept and theme, as well as some nice sprites and pixel art, I honestly just can't see myself spending $8 on a game like GrubDash Driver, due to its repetitive and oftentimes frustrating (due to factors out of your control) gameplay. This game may cater to a very niche-type of gamer but it's not for me. Its like its made by guys in business suits BORING !
I love this game it was one of the most fun 8-bit games i have played in over a year i will recommend to anyone of like this type of games
The game is very simple in it's design and not overly difficult to learn overall. The time limits are tight and the delivery process is straightforward and does get repetitive over time, but I'd say it's a fine way to kill some time. The GPS is not very helpful when it comes to walking around, so it's a lot of figuring out where to go and the housing areas constantly change numbers per street. If you map out the different locations using a notepad or something, it does help when finding the businesses though. Good game, nice upgrade paths, and fairly worth the price tag of $8.
I really wanted to like this game. It has a quirky charm and theme to it but sadly falls short of the mark. * Content is sorely lacking. The concept is good but there needs to be more to it. The whole "deliver, upgrade, repeat" cycle loses its charm quickly as there doesn't seem to be any story or real goal other then cosmetic house upgrades. * I get the whole idea of finding addresses is supposed to be challenging but when there is literally no rhyme or reason to the layout of the streets and housing numbers, random wandering can get annoying very quickly if you are unlucky. * Too much of the game is unexplained. The developer did explain some of the mechanics such as what boosts the chances of getting tips but you have to dig around for it as virtually none of this is explained in game. Also I keep finding items that I have no idea what they do as they are not the usual delivery upgrade items and the game makes no effort to explain what they are for. * Music is catchy and charming for a while but the game could really use some more soundtracks. They get repetitive (like much of the game) very quickly. * I came across quite a few bugs. Random crashes and being unable to pick up items right in front of me until I restarted the game popped up more often than I would like. A real shame as the theme and character of the game has potential but the core mechanics really don't quite come together. If this was a demo, I would say it would be a positive display with some good potential if worked upon but as it is, the game feels unfinished and not ready for full release.
Absolutely adorable!
So the game itself is ADORABLE! The only issue i have is that the streets are a little confusing. For example: I will read a sign that says 0-400 and then go down the block expecting the numbers to be in the hundreds but instead im looking at the 4000 block. Other then that I like the game, Also Id like to suggest being able to customize the drivers because we dont all look the same *wink *wink if you get my drift..Thanks for this little game its fun so far, I cant wait to see what im going to unlock next :)
A nice little time killer game. It has the aesthetics of SNES style games like Earthbound, with a similar style humor. The pleasant sound track make's it relaxing, but the timed mini games gives you a small sense of urgency to get deliveries done in time. Buying upgrades with your earned money keeps the game going, and upgrades come frequently enough to keep going and just want to do 1 more delivery. I will say it seems like some of the mini games can be a bit too random at times, and will set you up for failure that is beyond your control. Mainly the house address being randomized, and the driving mini game obstacles. If these were tweaked a bit to have a bit more consistency to them, it would be a great game instead of a good game.
I am really in love with this game. I feel like this game is one you can just pick up and play. I haven't found anything I didn't like yet. Worth the money in my opinion.
