Grim Dawn pushes the Titan Quest engine to its absolute limits. The fourth and final DLC introduces the Berserker class featuring werewolf and wereaven transformations, a first in the game's mechanics. Story-wise the DLC is something of side-content. It deals with defeating more evil and restoring peace, but doesn't advance the overall story or expound much upon our character. The quest that takes you into the new content can be started from Fort Ikon, requiring that you get through some portion of the base game. Other additions include Ascendant difficulty, potion customization, combat drop/enemy customization and ascended and awakened gear, all of which is welcome. Set pieces continue to add support for ever more niche builds and much of the new content, including collectibles, NPCs and loot are not limited to the new locations but can be found throughout Cairn. I will agree that boss mechanics that involve unavoidable danger and huge area denial (looking at you Loghorrean) are not generally enjoyable for me. But my sub-optimal Wereraven Evoker was able to handle Ultimate Beronath without much issue. If you're fighting him as a melee character ask someone else. I adored the aesthetic and distant mountains and buildings made the world feel more alive to me. For fans of the AARPG genre, this entire franchise is a labor of love. You can keep your PoEs and your Diablos. For me, the dawn looks best when it's a little... Grim. *cue sunglasses and sick guitar riff*

Up until basically the end of the DLC, it was very enjoyable. The Kurn People are extremely unenjoyable to play with or quest for, and the fetch quests are extremely bad game design especially because they're reliant on the other DLCs that you have to basically play/complete first despite allowing you to enter Fangs of Asterkarn before starting Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods??? Expect extreme back tracking. The only good thing about this expansion is the background lore(which is 10/10) and the kastorran beaver-people(amazing game design, why can't we work for them???)
Shi tty DLC crashes every time you try reload game. Locations are too big, OMG so empty and boring. Like every other DLC it brakes totally progression in game - finish normal and you got almost all devotion points. In devotion nothing changes - no new point no new constellations, no new mechanics (was so hard to add empowering or sth...?). Components are even more obsolete - they drop like crazy so it makes all mechanic not fun. Most of enemies are reskin of already introduced. Music is at best ok. Overall money and sentiment grab DLC - if it wasn't in game you wouldn't miss anything. Even cliche desert FG was better than this crap.
They cooked with this dlc. I have about 3,500 hrs into the game already. Time to put another 3,500+ into it
This expansion is GREAT for end-game optimization, the new mastery (Berserker) absolutely rules and it looks and sounds great. The new areas are very big and atmospheric, but lack a bit in depth - denser mobs and a few additional caves or mini dungeons to explore would be very welcome. The balancing is still a bit iffy, but nothing that can't be polished. Not my fave expansion but worth it for Berserker alone!
The claim "biggest expansion so far" is not true at all. It may "look" big because the areas are huge, but it doesn't have half the depth, the immersion, and the polish of Ashes of Malmouth or Forgotten Gods. Ascendant difficulty is not exciting and doesn't add anything new. I would have expected the progression to be somewhat linear with item upgrades needed to finish the questline, No, I simply picked a lvl 100 character and finished it straight away, didn't see any interesting new item drop either. The currency to ascend is extremely scarce and the new region lacks replayabilty value: (It's huge and there's no totems and no multi-floor dungeon) And there's the altar, easily the most hyped addition to the game. All it does is adding some extra chances of mechanics/drops (negligible percentages mostly) at the cost of sacrificing reagents and adding substantial buffs to the monsters hp and dmg. It's nothing groundbreaking but everyone likes rogue-like kind of challenges right? No. The buffs are EXCLUSIVE to the session you are currently playing, so you got to pay the price for activating them EVERY TIME. How they managed to not make it ON-OFF toggle with permanent unlocks, is beyond me, I don't want to be feel forced to play very long sessions to make the most out of the reagents costs. Simply ramp up the cost to unlock altar perks by 10x and make them permanently available. This is really bad design, and disrespectful towards people time. (Not to mention some altar options requires MUCH rarer reagents. penalizing builds that want to activate them) This DLC would have been Ok-ish if it released sooner and without so much hype. As I sad, Ashes or FGD is VASTLY superior in every compartment. I believe it's easily fixable by reworking the altar and drop rate in Ascendant, untl then i cannot reccomend it.
Overall I had a really good time with the dlc. the new areas are really nice, lots to do, some interesting fights and stories if you are into lore. If you played the original game and like that it is well worth getting the dlc. There were some bugs and balance issues when the dlc launched but most (if not all) of that has been patched so the game playes really well now.
