I played the original several times, way back when. So far this remake has been excellent, just hit chapter 2, playing on hard mode. It's just as unforgiving and punishing as I remember, and it still def has some of the jank present in how it operates. But the game has lofty goals which i admire, trying to make the world, camps, and characters feel gritty and lived in and ...well downright MEAN at times. But i appreciate that the game doesn't try to coddle the player at all. It's probably not a game for everyone. It's not often difficult in the dark souls way we've come to know. It's difficult in the "Welcome to the Colony" way. Where you're an unskilled freshie that can barely swing a stick and you just got punched in the mouth. now good luck, you'll probably die. I dunno, i like that i feel i have to avoid bloodwyn until i can pay him or beat up his thug. Actual consequences in a game feel nice for a change. Also, a divisive opinion: i think the new lockpicking system is excellent. It's rewarding to solve a lock under pressure (even under water pressure) and sometimes yeah, they are too difficult at the moment and i had to leave and comeback with a real-world notebook. I also don't mind the new economy system. I am okay with not being able to sell trash to vendors to make tons of ore. And i feel like i still have plenty anyway. I get what they were going for, and i'm okay with it.
As a massive fan of the 2001 original, I was skeptical about how a remake would handle the unique magic of Gothic. I am so incredibly happy to be proven wrong. This remake is a masterclass in how to update a classic. The developers kept the brutal, no-hand-holding philosophy that made the original great, while entirely modernizing the combat system so it feels fluid yet tactical. The visual overhaul of the Barrier, the camps, and the monsters is stunning, and the sound design perfectly captures that old-school nostalgia. You can truly tell this was made by fans, for fans. Thank you, developers, for treating this masterpiece with the respect it deserves!
Still one of the best games ever made and Alkimia absolutely nailed this remake. Can we have Gothic 2 next please?
Pretty game, phenomenal premise and story. I love games that take the roleplaying seriously and add in human interactions with NPCs. People will just mug you and ask for bribes; you're not treated like the main character at all. It's peak. And the defeat mechanic is AWESOME. BUT Half of the other mechanics are the most annoying thing in the world. The fun cooking at the start deceives you. The lockpicking is solvable by assigning the tumblers to "the row vectors of a sparse matrix" and one guy calculated a lock as having FIFTY-SEVEN steps to solve. But don't worry, all locks are always pickable, even though SOME CANNOT BE SOLVED WITHOUT INCREASING YOUR SKILL. Why let me pick the lock, then???? Coming into the game having not played the original, but enjoying games of similar ages, like Morrowind, I was expecting to have to find my own way, but this game doesn't even reward exploration early on. As a player with no background in the Gothic series, do you want to get weapons? Good luck. It'll drain you of all your ore and give you maybe +2 damage. Wanna get armor? Couldn't begin to tell you how to, even after FIVE HOURS of interacting with the world. The combat isn't even GIT GUD. The controls are simple enough to give you a low skill floor, and a low ceiling, but the enemies are just stat-checks, I've only been able to use a bow, a club, and a sword the whole time. The damage output of every enemy when you don't have armor is also nuts. On the standard difficulty you can get bodied by anything in two hits, one hit if it isn't the starting area. Don't grind through the fights like I did, though. There is NOTHING to loot anywhere that gives you a practical advancement in skill or equipment. It gives you meat and other ♥♥♥♥-tier weapons to sell off and scrape together enough ore to buy....nothing, really. Fantastic universe, awesome story, great factions, horrible gameplay to carry you through it.
As a kid, I fell in love with the original. Now, I get to fall in love again, but with the remake. Well done and recommending!!
I liked it
Slugging combat, punishing difficulty, lack of clarity on how to progress.
Juegazo esperamos el gothic 2 remake
