Spooky Nostalgia Trip Done Right
I didn’t expect much going in, but Terror in Little Creek surprised me with how well it captures the heart of Goosebumps. You play as Sloane Spencer, uncovering the mysteries of a fog-covered town filled with haunted theaters, creepy woods, and strange neighbors who clearly know more than they let on. It feels like stepping right into one of R.L. Stine’s classic books, spooky but not overwhelming, playful yet eerie enough to keep you guessing. The puzzles are clever and the exploration is fun. Every new area has hidden lore and small details that longtime fans will appreciate. The atmosphere is the real highlight, with great lighting and music that gives off those nostalgic 90s Goosebumps vibes. It is not too long, around four to five hours, but it keeps the pace steady and the story interesting from start to finish. Some things do fall short. Character movement feels a bit stiff and visuals can look low budget at times. It is also not very scary for seasoned horror fans. But for what it sets out to do, a cozy horror adventure that welcomes younger players and nostalgic adults, it succeeds.
Final Thoughts
It is short, atmospheric, and full of charm. Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek delivers a fun, family friendly scare with enough heart to stand out from typical horror titles. It is exactly what fans of the books have been waiting for.
[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? Goosebumps is a well-known series of over 60 books—mainly in the USA. In Europe, the novels are not as widespread. The books by American author R. L. Stine are horror stories—primarily written for children. The heroes in the books are also teenagers who find themselves in frightening situations, often involving supernatural, paranormal, or occult elements. In America, some books are even banned in certain areas because some parents expressed concern that their children might get too scared… There was already the point-and-click adventure Goosebumps: The Game on Steam (as well as for Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch), but the game was removed from sale by GameMill on August 8 this year (possibly for licensing reasons?) after 10 years. Currently, you can still buy Goosebumps Dead of Night (released in 2020 by Cosmic Forces). Now comes the new Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek. Let’s see how the new developers at PHL Collective have handled the theme. You play as Sloane Spencer, a teenage girl who, together with three of her friends, investigates the strange occurrences in her hometown. Unexplained things have happened in the small town of Little Creek—the police have imposed a curfew and censored all posts on social media as well as regular news. But the teenagers have still learned that something strange is going on at the old library and the cemetery. So, they sneak out of their houses at night to see for themselves. You play with an over-the-shoulder perspective in a 3D world. You can walk, sprint, sneak, shine a flashlight, and shoot with your slingshot. Soon, you’ll also gain the ability to cast spells. Items can be picked up, and you can interact with the environment at various hotspots. Before long, you’ll need to solve puzzles to progress. The main goal is to remove obstacles—mostly opening locked doors. Enter a code, find a key, shoot a specific object—and new areas open up for exploration. Find objects that help in certain places. Clues for solving puzzles can be found in various texts—newspapers, notes, posters, signs… You’ll also meet several townspeople—like the new librarian (the old one has disappeared…) or a policeman who reminds you of the curfew (but doesn’t do much else). The librarian, however, soon becomes a much more active helper. The game automatically draws a map. You have an inventory with all the items you find during the game. These can be essential items like a shovel or consumables like snacks, medkits, and different types of ammo for your slingshot. Here you can also see your health status. Soon, you’ll encounter various monsters—which you can fight with your slingshot or sneak past. You can also hide in trash cans, cabinets, or under tables. A crystal ball gives hints for the next puzzle. The gameplay is modeled after action-adventures for older players—all the essential mechanics are there: combat, stealth, inventory management, plus some puzzles and creepy sounds—just in a slightly toned-down form. Enemies don’t hit hard and don’t search for you very long if you shake them off. Your friends accompany you on the adventure, but they’re relatively useless. Usually, they stand around at certain spots and don’t know what to do next. Only when you remove obstacles do they move to the next point—where they stand around again. You can talk to them when you pass by or via walkie-talkies. Sometimes they give useful hints, but soon they disappear completely… and need to be rescued in the museum and theater. Progress is saved at typewriters scattered around… as often as you like and at no cost. If a monster defeats you, you restart at the last save point. Graphically, Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek is solid but not a high-end game. The textures are okay, but nothing more. Don’t expect ray tracing, realistic water rendering, or elaborate character animations. It sometimes looks like PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360 level. But you don’t need a high-end gaming PC for decent performance. Conclusion: Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek is an exciting horror action-adventure for players who find the heavyweights of the genre (like The Last of Us) too scary and demanding. Like the book series, the game is designed for kids. For elementary school children, it might be a bit too scary. Older kids and adults can definitely have fun with it. The narrative level is comparable to Famous Five, TKKG, or The Three Investigators. Varied, not-too-difficult puzzles, manageable fights against (slightly) creepy enemies (hiding or running away works well), the game is quite fun. The voice acting is good — but only in English. If you want an introduction to the exciting action-adventure genre, Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek lets you explore a small town and fight monsters for several hours.
This is a cute short game targeted for younger children. I bought it out of nostalgia for Goosebumps and while it isn't scary to me, it will likely work for younger children. You're in a small town and move from location to location backtracking and opening new paths when you unlock equipment/powers. Gameplay is light puzzles (nothing too difficult but younger children might need help), stealth sections avoiding monsters, and combat (largely optional) using a slingshot. Nice art style, voice acting, and story (but remember the story is geared towards kids so it's nothing groundbreaking). There's no way to quit the game and the only way to reload your most previous save is by dying in game or ALT + F4ing the game and going back in. The game also doesn't tell you how to switch slingshot ammo: you press the number buttons 1 through 6. Due to the inability to quit and only being able to go back to your most recent save from a save point, I ALT + TAB'd out to idle until finishing my playthrough. So ignore my playtime, actual playtime is about 5 hours and there's some replayability as you can go back and make different decisions to get a different ending (there are 2 endings available). I'd recommend this game if you have young children and want a kid-friendly spooky game.
This game plays like Resident Evil for a younger audience. There's also a lot to love here for adults who grew up with the classic Goosebumps stories. I hope it does well enough to get a sequel because I'd love to see more of these characters!
You can eat the cop.
Definitely a hidden gem. Resident Evil style gameplay and a good story. Family friendly, but still interesting for adults.
I kinda liked the game i guess but it just feels very poorly made and the dialogue does not feel like it was well written, still a good horror game to get if you want to get into the genre.
This game wasn't play tested, and it shows. Goosebumps: Terror in Little Creek is just another shameless cash grab preying on nostalgic gamers and children alike. Sloane moves slow even when she runs, and the slingshot mechanics are janky at best. If you are in the mood for cheap jump scares and your favorite IP (because why else would you buy this?), this game is for you. My advice if you are on the fence: wait until this goes on sale. It is not worth $40 USD. Also worth noting: there this nothing related to Goosebumps in this game. It only has the Goosebumps name slapped on it with a bunch of half-baked and generic monsters.
It reminds me of a ps2 game i would have played when i was a kid, the kind of game i would have went searching hours for, wishing i could see what a goosebumps world would look like. This game is basically a book in a video game format. Super gun, even for an adult like myself. I recommend checking it out if you like gaming at night and wanna experience something nostalgic and fun!
