Even though it's still in early access, it's been very enjoyable so far. Would recommend if you like choice based 2D games. My main criticism is that the trailer does not reflect the gameplay at this point, but it was fun nonetheless and I hope that it gets even better when it is done. Soundtrack and art are both really nice, did not encounter many bugs even running on a compatibility layer on Linux.
After I played Platonic Partnership's first game "Lydia", which affected me deeply, I immediately sought out their other games. When I saw that "Good Mourning" was available, I bought it and played it immediately. "Good Mourning" hit closer to home for me, but I don’t think I enjoyed it quite as much as "Lydia"; however, they are completely different. The story is really interesting, accompanied by an amazing atmosphere, art style and soundtrack. The game as a whole, especially the ending, really affected me, and "Good Mourning" has a lot to say about life as a whole, the decisions we make along the way, and the regrets we have afterwards. I saw a lot of myself in the main character, and unfortunately, that’s not entirely a good thing. I will definitely be replaying this soon, because I didn’t experience everything. -- 9.5/10 -- The reason I give it a 9.5 instead of a 10 is because the game is repetitive, however, the repetition is purposeful & part of the narrative’s point. I still felt that it could have used a little bit of trimming.
Good Mourning: A Narrative Game Redefining Linearity
"Good Mourning" weaves a compelling tale of rejoicing and regret, redemption and release. It's a narrative that explores the duality of life, self-reflection, choices, and opportunities, all within the framework of fantasy. This narrative-driven game places a strong emphasis on replayability. While its main storyline consists of handcrafted elements, they are randomized for each playthrough. The goal is to create an emergent narrative through gameplay, evolving alongside the core story. In the spirit of the critically acclaimed "Lydia," "Good Mourning" tackles weighty themes while celebrating the small joys of everyday life. However, it approaches these themes with warmth and empathy. The presentation of the story is as crucial as the narrative itself. "Good Mourning" is a run-based visual novel, evolving with each playthrough. Different outcomes offer distinct perspectives, shaping the interpretation of the narrative. The ultimate ending remains shrouded in mystery, awaiting discovery by the player. As the game progresses, the story can take unexpected turns. "Good Mourning" challenges the conventions of linear storytelling, recognizing that digital games thrive on choices and interactivity. It leverages the unique possibilities offered by games, such as randomly generated content, which is impractical in traditional media like literature and film. Gameplay Highlights: -"Good Mourning" combines visual novel storytelling with a collection of mini-games. -It encourages players to engage with the story through multiple playthroughs. -The narrative adapts to player choices, with portions randomly selected to enhance replay value. -Replayability is central to the story, impacting the character's choices and how they are perceived by others. -Emergent narrative emerges as players piece together segments of the storyline. Impressions: Having spent over 20 hours navigating this linear narrative game, I found myself both intrigued and somewhat perplexed by the story's progression. Scene after scene, the main character grapples with familial failures, toxic relationships, and life-altering choices. As the narrative director of the game, players contribute to the main character's emotional baggage. Platonic Partnership's intention appears to be to explore social interactions, specifically the consequences of how people engage with one another, leading to positive or negative effects on each other's lives. Certain parts of the story provoke reflection on one's personal life and choices. Although the game is currently in early access and only available in English, it demonstrates technical stability and artistic accomplishment. It's worth noting that the game may benefit from additional language options in the future. Regarding replayability, while I haven't explored it thoroughly, the presence of 100 Steam achievements adds an enticing layer of challenge. "Good Mourning" differs significantly from Platonic Partnership's earlier title, "Lydia," which left a profound impact on me. While "Good Mourning" resonated with me on a personal level, I may not have enjoyed it quite as much as "Lydia" due to their distinct natures. Nevertheless, "Good Mourning" offers an intriguing story complemented by an exceptional atmosphere, art style, and soundtrack. The game, particularly its conclusion, left a lasting impression and imparts meaningful insights about life's journey, decisions, and subsequent regrets. My rating: 9.5/10 I withhold a perfect score due to the game's intentional yet somewhat repetitive nature, which, while serving the narrative's purpose, could have been slightly streamlined with the ability to skip or speed up sections to reduce fatigue on the player. While not inherently important, our time is limited. Overall this is a lovely game with many narratives that touch the heart. I highly reccomend it to those who enjoy slice of life stories where art reflects on life.
I love odd and strange games and by far Good Mourning is both of those. Simple "walking sim" but w/ very strange plot. At first I didn't know who I was in the main plot but I might've figured it out (maybe). I love the soundtrack. I know it is early access but there were couple of typos and I managed to get stuck at one point but restart helped. I like the graphics. Simple but effective. Looping soundtrack is kinda annoying at some point and one has to constantly mess around w/volume. It has its bug but Early Access - pretty sure things will be sorted out soon enough - If you liked their previous game "Lydia" you will fall in love w/ "Good Mourning"

If you don't mind deterministic view of life as inescapable shi*hole full of crap people, it's very interesting game about piecing together picture of main character's life from small, well narrated vignettes. With strong sense of style and a bit of nonlinearity. It's just... almost unbearably depressing and skeptical.
The writing is good and some of the scenes are quite visually striking.
