This has got to be one of the most peculiar Early Access games I've played. It's both extremely undercooked but also shows great care in some aspects. The artstyle and the enviroments look extremely pretty. The soundtrack, while mostly unmemorable, fits the game well. The developers of this game wanted to mix up the playstyle a bit by giving the main character ranged only skills, which with the lack of a dash with i-frames, makes the gameplay focus more on positioning and finding a safe spot you can fire from before having to dodge an attack. I've quite enjoyed this change in gameplay since most metroidvanias I've played focus on melee-based combat more. All this is sadly more or less irrelevant in how the game feels to play. The story is for the most part nonexistent and whenever it resurfaces, it's weirdly disjointed and hard to truly care about. The events in each of the locations feel very loosely tied and there's essentially no build-up. The writing in the game tries to be somewhat ethereal and metaphorical at times but it falls extremely flat due to how poor the English translation is, making you wonder if what you're reading is a 1:1 or an inaccurate translation of the original. The map, while unique in its presentation, is for the most part worthless. Some automatic markers that mark quest items or NPCs would be very welcome, otherwise you need to cruise through the same areas over and over if you forget to pick something up. The currency you gather from totems and enemies is for the most part worthless since there's only one vendor in the game and their inventory is rather small. I have a feeling most of the kinks won't be ironed out on release. I've had the same hopes with another metroidvania I've put high hopes on - Lost Epic, which was also promising but was released in a rather undercooked state as well. Then again, if the game will improve on its current state, I'll probably beat it since it shows a lot of promise and soul, especially considering how extremely small the development team is - I've counted three individual developers in the staff roll. I'm patiently waiting for the full release and the game being improved so I can turn my thumb the other way, but as things currently stand, I cannot recommend buying this game. Also I'm not going to lie that I really want this game to succeed and turn out to be good and worth recommending. I'll keep a close eye on the updates and see if anything changes for the better. It's ultimately these small games made by passionate developers that are worth the highest amount of love and support.
I will give this game a recommended rating because I am personally enjoying it and I want it to gain visibility so it can get better, but to me, the translation both in English and Spanish (my native language) is awful. The dialogues, menu options and game texts are plagued with grammar mistakes, inconsistencies and mistranslations to a degree that is not expected of a commercial product. The team should seriously consider hiring a translation team to fix this ASAP, because it drastically reduces the quality of an otherwise brilliant game. In terms of visual quality, gameplay and story progression, it's an amazing metroidvania which can easily compete with the likes of Ender Lilies, the Ori games or even Hollow Knight. If you like any of these games, don't even hesitate and buy it. Regarding the map, even if it's not very detailed, I think it gets the job done.
Cute and funny metroidvania with a gorgeous art style. Important to note that the game is currently in early access, expect some bugs and some missing translations. Reviewing metroidvanias fairly is incredibly hard due to the incredibly high standard set by games like ori, hollow knight, and ender lilies. These games are so outstanding with small dev teams and small price tags that its hard to compete within this niche. However if you treat glimmer like the reasonably priced early access indie game it is, you'll have a pretty great time. The story is engaging, the combat fairly satisfying, and the collecting just as fun as its peers. Highly recommended to people who want more of a good formula.
无能的策划真得给美术磕头了,到现在还没有牛魔的答复,活全家了
While it's not a bad game, I'd wait for it to get out of early access as there are plenty of issues that can stop you from enjoying it. My experience so far... Positive: -Some fairly varied enemies. When it comes to normal enemies, there is nothing mechanical wise an experienced Metroidvania player hasn't seen before, but the art is done well and they're not overly boring. - Bosses aren't a push over. 5 hours in and I haven't found a boss I was able to kill on the first try, but once I figured it out none were overly difficult. - Graphically the game looks good, as you can see from the screen shots/video. Neutral: - While the bosses can be tough until you figure them out, the normal enemies are all so far pretty easy to get around. I've not yet felt like I was in danger of dying while just exploring the world. People can determine if that's good or bad for themselves. - Movement is, so far, uncomplicated. I feel that it's slow, but some people may find it enjoyable as it doesn't require a high level of skill to just move around. Bosses come down more to predicting what move the boss will do and being in the right spot before the attack goes off, rather than dodging out of the way. Negative: - The map. This is why I'm putting the game down for now. Maybe they'll make a map that works, maybe they won't, but so far it's basically useless. Artistic, but useless. It's just connected 'stars' for each area connected to each other. So you can tell "Blah" is west of "Meh," but that's it. You don't get to see individual rooms, things you've explored, or where save or teleportation rooms you've visited are. If you're just looking to beat the game, you'll likely spend a fair bit of time wandering around trying to figure out what to do, if you're a collector and want to 100% everything, you'll spend a LOT more time being simply lost. -Bugs. I've already mentioned that I had a crash on first launch, but there are also some logic issues. I've given up on following the story for the most part, because occasionally the text will just change from English to Chinese mid conversation. I've also had the game lock after a story bit ended. I didn't regain control over the character. Couldn't move, jump, or open any menu, but the music and graphics continued until I force closed the game. I'm not not recommending the game because it's bad, but because the current execution is flawed and will greatly diminish ones enjoyment. Once the game is out of EA, I'll gladly come back and pick up where I left off if the more major issues (map for me) have been resolved.
This game is very pretty, but the action is constantly interrupted by cutscenes for every object you pick up off the ground. They are very twee and very annoying, much more so than a game it most resembles, Ender Lilies. Where that game has lots of secret places to discover, the demo for Glimmer in Mirror is very linear. The localization is also slightly off (something evident from the title's missing "the"). The writers don't know the difference between an ardvark and a "salamander". If the rest of the game is like the demo, I would be too bored and aggravated to continue playing.
Beautiful blue lily with small underwater spikes
Gimmer in Mirror is a good metroidvania. I really liked the style of the environment and characters. It was interesting to explore different locations and fight different enemies. Big amount of abbilities and possibility to upgrade them in different ways gives you a lot of space for experiments. About the plot . It, frankly, just complements the overall picture. In addition, due to problems with localization, it is difficult to understand it sometimes. As I got it, the main language was Chinese, and then they translated it into English, most likely by machine translation, and then adapted it to other languages. I started playing in my native Russian language, but, unfortunately, all the descriptions of abilities in this translation are in Chinese. So I had to switch to English. And English one isn't perfect either, there are moments where I had to guess the answer options for lines where they were in Chinese. I think this will be fixed later, since the game is in early access yet. Regarding the bosses , they are interesting, but not all are balanced. I completed the entire game on normal difficulty, but had to beat the last boss on easy difficulty. It's too hard in comparison with another enemies on the road. It would be nice if developers fix this later. But, thanks to the style and the main character of the game, you can forgive a lot. The developers will continue to add content to the game, since it haven't got a final ending yet, as I understand it. And there are many different secrets that are not available at the moment.
从关注开始哥们儿都从高中生到研究生了,参与过众筹和测试,趁开始忙起来之前赶紧打了,但内容没什么变化说实话很失望。想说点什么但看到多少还算有动静就还是算了,等毕业了再回来看看了……
A promising start for an Early Access game. If the level of polish up to the first boss (the point I got to) is to be upheld though the whole game, the final product would be a hit.
A very nice Platformer in the vein of Ori and Hollow Knight. I literally gasped out-loud the first time I saw the graphics. There's also a dash of Ender Lillies in here. Obviously it's not quite as good as either of those games, but competent enough. And to the devs: Just make a normal map. The one you made it's beautiful but it will just make people mad and the game has so much going for it it'd be a shame if that stopped people from trying your game. I'll say this: at this price, a no-brainer.
