This game is hardly playable in its current state. The gameplay loop is unbelievably boring and repetitive. Enemies just rush at you without any real intelligence. Starting out, your only option for combat is to whack a stick, stone, or leaf and move around. All those weapons feel identical. You just click the button and whack. Want to buy a new weapon? Good luck getting any significant amount of coins from killing enemies. Your only real chance of getting coins is to complete the game's "objectives." Which means you have to suffer round after round of a total snoozefest until you take enough damage, deal damage, kill a certain amount of enemies, etc. Then even when you can get better weapons, who cares? The game has no variety or challenge to offer. There's nothing to work towards. It's insulting that this is being sold as an early access game - this is early prototype material. Very disgraceful. The developers seriously need to step in and add more to this game if they're going to be selling it.
Steel up for the arena and slay waves of egg-shaped potatoes in this seemingly simple indie... until you look under the hood to discover a surprisingly diverse arsenal unlocked through luck and crafting. Sprinkle skill trees and stat points and it you won't notice an hour or two fly by as you evolve into the ultimate warrior.
Note that this game is in early access, so contents may change and not be reflected in this review Survivors-likes have certainly exploded in recent years, primarily because they're a fairly easy formula to emulate. GP is fundamentally one, structured around increasingly difficult foes from all directions, and a randomized upgrade choice at the end of each successful round. Your options allow for a measure of build flexibility, since you can count on, say, life upgrades if your core stats are fully offensive. Survive 25 rounds, and you'll be crowned champion. But what sets GP apart from the numerous other wave defender games is its crafting system. One that, at the time of review, honestly isn't explained well. You're shown that you can buy two sticks from the shop and drag-and-drop them to form a pointed spear, after which you're pretty much left to your own devices. My second act was to buy a stone and, surely enough, was able to upgrade its offensive power by giving it a bladed tip. From there, you'll find that two leaves craft rope, and rope plus stick equals bow. Being a sucker for ranged weapons, my bow carried me from start to finish. But little did I know, I missed out on all the fun. You see, the shop is apparently gated by your luck stat. If you don't upgrade luck, you won't find all the cool toys: Shurikens, (homing) bats, fire spells, ice potions, power stones... and maybe other things I never discovered... because I didn't upgrade luck. Everything that I describe here was discovered after i completed the arena, making me wonder what other crazy combinations I could have enjoyed instead of smashing endless sticks and stones into my bow. You can, for example, drag an ice potion onto the bow to give it frost element, slowing enemies. Or you can craft multiple bows and combine them to upgrade rarity. The skill trees open up important tactical options, like shields, healing potions, and the absolutely mandatory dash. Upgrades not only improve their hit points, but also add perks like bonus damage, collateral attacks, and round regeneration. You really will become invincible if you earn them all, which could be a flaw if you want more challenge. Two other features worth mentioning are the challenge mode, where you essentially fight special bosses (for fun, no real reward), and objectives, which are in-game achievements of sorts that award extra cash to spend on gear. I've been through a lot of cheap indies with my time on Steam, so I'm impressed to see so many layers to a casual game like this one. It wouldn't be a fair critique without mentioning demerits: Too many dead bodies in the arena become hazards, blocking shots, trapping your escape, inhibiting dash. The physics can be wonky - ranged weapons like bow don't always hit unless you can figure out where to aim your mouse, dependent on the range stat and the fact that it has an incredibly narrow hitbox. Speaking of hitboxes, crafting can be annoying because slender objects have to nearly kiss to combine, and I had a number of irritating moments trying to upgrade my bow by sliding it around the screen. Movement is "slippery," like mario on ice, but you'll only ever really need dash so it's easy to overlook. For its price, I feel it delivers more than many others in its category, and scratches that one-more-round itch. For that, I can recommend it. But keep in mind it's early access, so the roadmap of features still remains to be seen.
Achievement Hunters: Straightforward - kill bosses, complete the arena. Everything else will be earned along the way. If you can manage to get a high rarity or luck-gated weapon like bats, it's a breeze. Possibly ~2hrs to 100% at fastest, upgrades and skill dependent.
Simple wave-based game that needs to balance certain things. The first thing you must do is purchase a weapon from the store. The most common are a regular stick, a stone, or a leaf. Although the pick is random after each round, you can pay a few coins to reroll and possibly find a slightly improved main weapon or something new. Better stuff is pricey, and you may not have enough money. In this situation, you can lock a weapon and return for it once you have earned enough. When bought, weapons are dropped on the main screen and can be moved around. There’s a physics engine included so you can use one weapon to push others to the edge of the screen and beyond. This creates a problem. If you push a weapon too far, you won’t be able to select it. Such as weapon is lost because it doesn’t respawn at the center of the screen. This can be very painful if it happens with an expensive and powerful weapon. Money is acquired by beating enemies and obtaining loot, but mostly by accomplishing the main and daily missions. The more you play, the more you will earn from doing basic things such as kill the required number of enemies or grabbing coins. There are no experience points from the enemies, but you still get to pick an upgrade after each wave. Each comes with two effects, but one of them can be a negative. For instance, “Life bloom” improves healing but also lowers your damage by one. The more waves you survive, the bigger the odds of getting a better perk. Your success can be improved with a few very basic skill trees. Since the game is still in early access, there’s only defense that boosts shield and archery for double arrows and critical damage. Melee and agility skills are still work in progress and are not available. The trees are currently pointless because the bow is not included yet or is very rare. I played for a couple of hours and haven’t seen it. Every melee weapon feels useless and not very fun. Especially because of the »bounce« mechanic that keeps pushing you around enemies until you die. The only path to success is an ice potion that can hit more enemies at once. Because of the floaty controls, negative perks that involve movement make no difference. You can easily choose damage or attack speed and quickly take out every enemy.
Gladio Potato is a very fun and very addictive game. Even it's in early access you can play for countless hours. I have played four hours straight for now but never encountered a bug. The game has very nice and unique crafting system, great music and visual art and very challenging gameplay. You can make unique weapons with basic tools to aid you in your adventure and get to choose random perks each round based on your success. You can feel the progress in the game. Each time you defeat enemies in the arena you get stronger and richer to make more unique weapons as reward to your playing skills so you can't get enough of it. Developer is very active so the game got new features each time you enter the game. If you like games like Hades i recommend you to enjoy this!!
love the game it is a great time waster and more would recommend
duuude i didnt expect much but im kinda glad that this is not just another survivors like type of game and some cool mechanics as the crafting for better weapons i love it tho
At first I was a little confused due to the lack of tutorial, but I went to the store page and read the info boxes, and thats how I learned about combining objects to make them stronger. The game could definitely benefit from a short in-game tutorial. The first 20 minutes or so I felt very powerless, getting flatlined over and over again, and I wondered if this game was designed to be played with multiple people instead of trying to troupe through as a solo act - But, then I realized the point of the game early on was not to defeat opponents, but to earn coins to use to build stronger equipment. After figuring that out it felt a lot less burdensome, and like I was actually accomplishing goals, but I wish getting stronger at the beginning wasn't so vague and time consuming- I think its something that will potentially put off having long-term players. The skill system, and getting to choose a temporary power up every time I beat a level was very well implemented, and I enjoyed seeing the differences each one made for my next round- It made me wish maybe there were separate classes to choose from, or builds to play- Like archer, swordsman, etc, that would have different pros and cons to them. It's an early access game, and I think that there is a good base to build from here, but I think it is also in need of some weapon balancing, clear objectives, and a strong tutorial. It is a surprisingly cute game, where you get to customize your little potato person, and its pretty fun once you get the hang of it, but my overall feeling is that its missing just a little something. All said, I'm excited to see what direction it takes, it could end up being a pretty fun party game to play with friends!
Both a roguelike genre and extremely fun It makes you feel the sense of progress as you play. You don't want to put it down. I really liked the game
