Thank you in advance Short Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=040lhBXugZQ
👁Overview👁
Have you always dreamed of kicking a colleague who doesn't accept your idea? Are you intrigued by the process of game development? Well, Gamedev Beatdown gives you that opportunity. Gamedev Beatdown is a mix of many genres like turn-based, simulation with narrative elements and other things. It is developed by QYJO which is composed of two passionate developers who decided to bring their own baby to life. You will have the opportunity to see what really happens behind your favorite games, experience the war-like meetings and fight (literally) with your arguments, humor and references to the world of video games will be an integral part of the adventure for our enjoyment.
📖History📖
Your rise (or descent) begins as a game developer during the student game jam. The challenge? 4 weeks to create with your team a Roguelike that everyone will agree on! You will be confronted with difficult choices and you will have to fight for ideas in a development team with many different career styles as an employee of a large, soulless video game company, an indie developer and more.
📺Graphics/Art Direction📺
Developed under Unity, Gamedev Beatdown is oriented towards a smooth and neat 2D style. Here no pixel art or retro style but colorful and pleasing to the eye illustrations. The problem lies in some animations / effects in combat that are still incomplete. The improvement of these two points is of course planned later during early access and will allow an additional visual comfort.
🎧Soundtrack🎧
I don't really know how to describe it but if you've ever played management games like "mad game tycoon" or "gamedev tycoon" you must know the famous music which is nice at the beginning but irritating after 2/3 hours of play. Gamedev Beatdown is no exception to this but you can't blame him because it's a kind of signature mark of this kind of game and you can easily correct it in two clicks in the option menu.
🎮Gameplay🎮
You will alternate between 2 different phases: The management phase Here you will have to manage the progress of the project thanks to the paths present on the screen that correspond to different events https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2054834293 The different events will raise or lower the 4 main stats of your game or allow you to purchase upgrades for your team/game or for the combat phase. Everything will take place via choices that will sometimes lead to battles.
The 4 stats of a game

Graphics
Mechanics
Stability
Hype

There is also your budget to take into account because making a game is far from being free! You will have to build a team by recruiting and paying salaries, make marketing operations, make questionable choices and manage other more or less unexpected expenses. On your desk you will also find a book that contains definitions of video game industry terms such as crunch, roguelike, credit and others. There is also a list of the games you have made and your achievements. The cousin of the Gameboy named "Gamegirl" will also have its place on your desktop and will allow you to play tappy bird and other parodies/games later on thanks to your progress in the story. The battle phase The fighting phase takes place turn by turn and remains very classic. You have hit points and action points that you can use to use skills, defend yourself, attack or simply move to avoid a powerful attack from your enemy. You can skip your turn to keep your action points for the next turn, they will add up and allow you to use more or less powerful skills. The skills are one of the points that differentiate this game from the classic humorous turn-based game. To increase the damage of a skill you have a mini-game on the "Gamegirl" and you will have to fill it to the maximum to do as much damage as possible. Your first mini-game will be Tappy bird, a parody of the infamous Flappy bird. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2054832500
Qualities and defects
✅Positive points✅ - Lots of humor and references to cult video games - Eye-catching graphics - Important content for an early access start - Developers who listen and are very responsive - Mini games to increase the power of skills - A management aspect and interesting choices - Very good service life ❌Negative points❌ - Fairly repetitive fighting - Some bugs still present but quickly fixed - Irritating soundtrack after 2/3 hours of play - Incomplete animations/effects
✏️Conclusion✏️
Gamedev Beatdown makes a few youthful mistakes but manages to make up for them with his funny but fairly real plot from the world of video games. There's still a lot of work to be done to make the game reach its full potential but I'm confident in the future because the developers are committed to their project with all their heart and are listening to the players. If you want to help the development of the game knowing that it is imperfect at the moment then don't hesitate to buy it now. Otherwise if you're someone who likes games that are completely finished and bug free then wait for some updates before you decide to buy it.
Do not be fooled by my low hour count. I have been playing the alpha that was available on their Discord server for quite sometime before having it on Steam. The game is fun, and will give you an idea of the hell that is gamedev. Inspired by the South Park games for its fight system, and by Game Dev Tycoon, Gamedev Beatdown will offer you many hours of game. You can create over 40 games right now, and there will only be more content added since the game is currently in Early Access. So I can only recommend you to purchase Gamedev Beatdown
Gamedev Beatdown is quirky, entertaining, and oddly enough, educational game. For someone who greatly enjoys playing games but have little to no knowledge (like most laymen) as to what's going on "behind the scenes", this game truly open my eyes to a whole lot of close to real life scenarios and challenges that may happen during game development, especially once you've gone indie to try to build your own team/studio, and develop your own games. A little humble brag - my most successful game :) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2058732711 The game is simple enough once you understand that the stats of your game should come first, so any event that will grant you stats should be prioritized, especially after you've purchased the power-up item which will allow you to attack twice per action. Even as I messed up my playthrough and only had 5 out of the 10 allowed item slots filled, I've only lost like 2-3 fights since the AI here is fairly easy to beat :) Personally, I think the combat isn't the highlight of the game despite being pretty fun in a strategic kind of way - it's actually the never-ending riffs and inside jokes that anyone who has a rudimentary understanding of how game development works and the issues that devs often face would really enjoy. It's sad because it's true and yet funny because it's slightly exaggerated to comedic effect.
Watch me play!
Part 1: Act 1 and 2 - note that I've messed up and didn't actually manage to collect all of the freebies I was given in the later game. For some reason, I thought I should because I clicked on the item and not the green button. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihtdxMvD2L0 Part 2: Act 3 (Experimental) - Not a fan of 2D fighters so I'm not a fan of this kind of gameplay, but I thought I should still give it a go... so here it is :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGThamv-NsQ
Pros
+ An in-depth and darkly+sarcastically humorous look behind the curtains of the typical game dev process. + Plenty of unique scenarios where you'll have to choose a side, whether it is to stick with your art department, production team, design department, etc etc. + Progression = increase in complexity = more departments to placate + Simple turn-based combat with "not that intelligent" AIs that you'll end up being thankful for, especially during overwhelming odds. Can be a tad bit repetitive though. + Lots of "power-ups" that you can mix and match, and even "upgrade" over time + Impactful decision making will determine whether your game is a success or a flop. + The game's funny enough to make you chuckle now and then. I guess to any dev who experienced all of the scenarios first-hand, the humour here is fairly dark. + You can contribute to Gamedev Beatdown's development by sharing your game dev stories from a gamer's or a dev's POV.
Cons/Feedback
- Design suggestion: I only realized that I have not been getting any of the freebies (chests) because I clicked on the item rather than the green button. Maybe make the items themselves clickable? Still, it's completely my mistake though. Not really sure why I did that instead of clicking on the green button. - The default AI difficult level seems rather easy. Maybe adding a harder game mode for those looking for a challenge? - Personally, I think the game doesn't have enough content to justify the price just yet, but once Act 3 is done (and maybe an Act 4?), yes. - I think the Ultra Move isn't working at the moment? Tried it at one point and there's no noticeable effect. - I'd like to see more involvement of the types of people you hire (their personalities) on the game that's being developed... and maybe on the types of scenarios you get? Like a "Chai Addict" could have split chai all over his/her computer and erased all copies of the work he/she was working on setting back development for weeks. - I also think it's a good idea to show the minimum number of stats needed (the goal) whenever new stats are added to the chart, just so I could see how much more I'd need or even if I still need any and make my decisions accordingly.
Overall
Gamedev Beatdown is still a work in progress - the Act 3 of the game is evident of that - but from what I can see in the first two Acts which I've greatly enjoyed, the game is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Check back in now and then to see how far the game has come and if you think the game has enough content to warrant a purchase, feel free to do so - the game's really fun if you enjoy game dev jokes or like to learn, in a light-hearted way, about what the game development process if like for the people working on a game. > Start a new studio. > Start Souls-like project for max gains. > Hires full art and tech teams to speed up graphics and code. > Lone designer keeps ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up mechanics and only gets negative stats every encounter. > Get to the end of the project and realize there's no mechanics. > Realize I've released walking sim Souls. > 2/5 - "Wheres the game!?" - Game Raider. > TFW I am what I hate most - a walking sim dev.
I have been working in the games industry for about 10 years. And as a developer can relate to all that happens at work. Overall a very funny game with a great art style and fun game-play.
- Very well polished game - Turn based - Mini games - Interesting tiny details, affects the game play - A different approach to show case the game dev - Very active dev sup in discord
Gamedev Beatdown is a turn based action rpg game with a quirky story depicting development of games in the gaming industry. The game revolves around different playable characters from different departments of the gaming industry and gives the player a unique incite into the decision making that goes into making a game. Even though you will end up making difficult choices that can impact your game in terms of sales or customer satisfaction, the game has a pun based humorous dialogue lines that will make you laugh and make the tough decisions look trivial. The turn based fighting is similar to all other turn based games, which makes it easier for players to learn the gameplay. If you love games like South Park : Stick of Truth, you'll love this game.
GameDev Beatdown is very entertaining with extremely funny and quirky writing. It puts you in the shoes of running a game development studio and depicts behind the scenes of game development process very accurately. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of starting from small indie studio, managing team, making tough decisions and developing multiple games. I would totally recommend this game to anyone for experiencing what goes behind making a game.
