I like this game a lot. It's fun, it has a variety of game modes, it looks and sounds good and it has zero input lag. However... - No keyboard button remapping. The default buttons are unfavorable. I am willing to overlook this because I have recently discovered that my keyboard driver lets me change the buttons to my liking. -The leaderboard has no information about the stage you lost at, just a name and a score. Which means that I can't boast about a 1all or a 2all to anyone. -The "Whomp 'Em" achievement "Defeat the Yamada Virus without continuing" did not unlock after I did a 1ALL of arcade+. -Although it sounds good there are slight pops when explosions happen, but that's quite insignificant. -The big kicker: the game FREEZES, a lot! At first I was able to pause then unpause to make it move again. Then the big freezes started happening, the ones where your screen becomes black after beating a boss and you just hope something will happen, but nothing ever does. Or the ones where you game over, the continue option never shows up, you watch the boss time out, then the screen becomes black forever. Because of this I am unable to finish runs, I am unable to play the game. Buy at your own risk.
Switch版はDLCコミコミで安価なのにSteam版はいつまでもDLC分離でお高いのが気に入らない
Asking $30 for this game is just insane with $10 piecemeal DLC on top of that, you have got to be kidding me! Wait for it to be on sale like I did, or find a better shooter to play. Do not pay more than $8 for this game! This is a merely "okay" SHMUP with waaaay too much trial-and-error design that requires you to remember the tricks the various enemies will pull to get you next time around. It's a lazy way to shoehorn difficulty and replayability into an otherwise pretty shallow game. Also, despite claiming hi-res features, it really does look like a late-90s console shooter, which is perfectly fine to me, but if you are claiming something, offer it.Ultimately, there are just better games out there, and most of those better games are significantly easier on your wallet and offer a more complete experience. The genre has evolved way too much for this to hold up. It does not have the timeless charm of the Cotton series, or the legendary status of Raiden, so it's just on Steam to be on Steam and advertise itself alongside superior bullet hell titles.
I love shoot em ups and about 10-15 years ago, I went through a huge slew of them on the Sega Saturn. These days, those same games are deathly expensive to purchase legit copies of, but you won't find a better collection in the genre. Games like DoDonPachi, Soukyugurentai, Galactic Attack/RayForce, Batsugun, Hyper Duel, Battle Garegga, Radiant Silvergun and so many more had effectively set unfair standards of what I expect from a shoot em up and it's rare these days to find one that lives up to those expectations. For those that don't know, this game is from that era and it too did get a release on the Sega Saturn. Except, I wouldn't put in the top half of the good games. Back then, I did an unpublished review of the game where I said it was a serviceable game in an overcrowded genre on a console where that genre shines. Coming back to it 10+ years later, my opinion hasn't really changed. The thing is, there are still plenty of things going for it. Forget that you can't rebound keys for a moment because most of the negative reviews cite that as the main issue. I played with a controller because to me, that is what you use for games like this; it seems crazy to me to use a keyboard. And the controller handles pretty well - I didn't notice any lag. The homage to different arcade enemies are really creative - the sort of thing I don't really see a whole lot of. The number of modes is good, the music is good and the retro aspect at a solid 60fps is certainly a positive. But, for a game that is manic like all bullet hell's are, there is not a whole lot of screen room. Leaderboards are a bit of a mess and TATE mode is only in Saturn mode. I also hate that 3 characters are sitting behind a paywall. I'm not paying the money for characters (as cool as they are) in a shoot em up. You're also given little room for error to upgrade your character before the enemies simply outweigh your bullets which makes it brutal in its difficulty (par for the course). You play as different characters, and some are far more forgiving than others. I started with Pig because of course you do. Look at him - he's short, fat, kinda cute...something I could identify with. But then I went onto the blue robot guy who was way stronger. So, on one hand, I do recommend this game as a curious look into that era. On the other hand, there are SO MANY better examples that could have been released instead (or are already on Steam). It is literally one of those games I would give a neutral recommendation if that was the choice. The intro to the game is still excellent.
Outstanding arcade classic wonderfully brought into the modern age. Never played this in the arcades but I can see why it has endured and is popular. Classic schmup action, awesome Japanese stylings, great port- it's all here. An easy recommend for any arcade shmup' fan 9/10.
Never have I had so much fun with a not especially good shmup. The game has ton of charm. Enough to make up its so-so gameplay. I was smiling from the moment I booted up the game and the opening credits were read in a cutesy voice. Followed by an adorable opening narrative of a part-time arcade employee (making 800 Yen/hour) attempting to save the video game world from a mad scientist trying to infect all video games to rule it. Or something, it's not important. Even the little catch phrases the in game characters say picking up items or being hit was cute. Though, this might quickly become annoying for some players. Unfortunately, Tengoku Cruisin' Mix Special skews very hard into memorize it or die territory. Many enemies and bullets just move too quickly or come from behind for a player to do much but know they're coming. The bullets can easily get lost in the carnival of colors as well. The boss fights are some of the quickest I've ever played in a shoot 'em up. Even with some of them having invincibly phases. I think if a player just doesn't want to deal with a particular boss, they need only drop 3 bombs to finish them off. That's how little health these bosses have. Not that I'm complaining too much given like the rest of the game, it is more about knowing where you need to be beforehand that keeps your extends instead of weaving a path through sea of projectiles. Which makes the game a strange hard-easy. It's pretty difficult until you know whats going to happen, but once you do; it isn't nearly as bad. And heavy memorization shooters always feel shallow to me for that reason. That said, the game makes up for it with its the more adorably sugary sweet presentation and character. And if you like that kind of thing, I whole hearty recommend this game and suggest you play through the story mode taking as many continues to see the whole thing through.
Very fun and unique game! Originally released on the sega saturn. I played on a old laptop on Linux using proton and the game plays perfectly, very well optimized! There are some minor issues though: – The control mapping is very basic, you can’t map every key (at least from the keyboard). What I did was to use a gamepad and the steam built-in controller configuration and that fixed my issues – The game is very tough, but fortunately you can have unlimited lives so it is not a huge issue – On Linux at least on mine machine the mouse cursor is always visible, but I installed a program that I run when I run the game so I don’t see it
