Super cool! Puzzles and puzzles all around!
Fremdganger is a short, but ambitious game, that peels away its layers away like an onion. Its structure reminded me of the movie "Everything, everywhere, all at once". As other reviewer have mentioned, it is best to go in this game blind, and discover it though play. But for sure, there is more than what meets the eye initially. Fremdganger experiments with many different genres. None of them are too in-depth, but they don't need to be. This game is more about the flow and unpredictability of what you might encounter next then the gameplay loop(s) themselves. The dev did a good job of figuring out the structure and navigation of the world, which keeps the experience engaging. Puzzles were simple and intuitive, at no point did I feel stuck.
Just finished playing it a bit ago. (No spoilers.) Like most casuals, I discovered it thanks to already knowing the developer's youtube channel. I think it's pretty cool how he was able to expand his talents further and create this game, such that if I had watched his videos and played this game, I wouldn't have made the connection. That's how different this project is, and I commend him for this. As for the game itself? On first playthrough, it's pretty trippy. Switching between styles of gameplay to resolve challenges impossible in one plane of existence. Some minor gripes with the puzzles, but they serve their function fine, mostly. (A "birthday" is not an entire year unless their mother has an extremely small vagina.) A cool one was basically taunting us with an impossible puzzle that only resolves once having started over. The game also presents variety with the type of gameplay involved. But the core problem is the first playthrough notion. I tried a second playthrough to see if my choices impacted things. And they didn't. I went through the same patterns and actions, even including that impossible puzzle. While the order in which you can solve some puzzles changes in the game's second half, it's basically multiple winding paths leading to the same exit. Choices are an illusion. For games focusing on a singular story, I prefer to either not have choices or have the choices lead to small benefits. There is also a focus on proper nouns without establishing anything about those proper nouns. One character's name is brought up in relation to that impossible puzzle, but who is this character? Who are the other three? Who is the storyteller? Even the story's core antagonist appears to speak to someone, but even after consulting the guide, I don't have the slightest clue nor care as to who this someone is. The storyteller hints at these characters and speaks to something beyond, but I'd rather focus be changed to solely a trippy 4th wall breaking horror and not hint at set-ups without payoffs. I'm very optimistic going into new media as I assume the best where I can until I have all relevant information, at which point hope crashes hurt all the more. In the current economy, calling anything "not worth the price" feels like a slap in the face, especially considering how much work went into this game, but I don't know if 10 dollars is worth it. The game is certainly a fun experience, but don't expect much outside the trippy horror. I had it on wishlist, and it happened to go on sale. If you've got spare money, a means to portray your reaction like a YouTube or Kick channel, or just want to support Mastermind's creative pursuits, give it a go at full price.
Its a short but fun game, does something different than I was expecting. I never get scared but going in blind and playing int the dark while alone was definitely getting to me at the twist part. BUT I have to be honest, its downfall is the controls for the first person parts. I almost did not want to even finish the game when the last part had me constantly restarting because i have to turn two times to run over and over and guess when to turn again all while being chased by something much faster. Also, there seems to be only one ending (which is fine, I don't really mind it) but it makes it not something I want to replay because I think I already saw everything there is to offer. My last issue with it is the price. 10 dollars for a game that took about three maybe four hours (and thats me going through everything that I could) with only one ending, and no achievements the price needs to be less. I would say 5 dollars is perfect, but any more and its just not worth it unless you really love the game developers or played over and over because it was just that fun for you.
Got a key for this through my stream team (CEOs of Screams) thanks to the developer! What a great game! The different "planes" is such a cool concept and executed very well! Tons of thinking when doing these puzzles, but no puzzle was ever THAT difficult. Visuals are all over the place, which works for this game. Story was really deep too, yet I felt kind of let down by the ending. Maybe more lore will come out in other games by the dev? If you dig getting your brain melted, having a couple jumpscares, and using some reasoning to solve puzzles, this game is for you!
very, very cool and cute graphics which helped distracting me from the constant panic I'm in while playing; also the quite cool plot twist made this game interesting even for me, as a not-that-big-fan of horror games. Over all, pretty recommendable
(Spoiler voraus!)
Great game 👍
