Alright. Pyramid Curse is done and dusted. This game reminds me of some of the weird horror movies that would air on network television when I was growing up, even preceding VHS (although not necessarily preceding BetaMax). A lot of surrealism and a lot of jumping around from scene to scene, and hopefully they all tie together and make some sort of sense in the end. Which fortunately, this game did accomplish. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3422211946 I would say this is probably the most involved game SpoocleMacBoogle has released, inasmuch as the story has more depth, there is actually less mystery, and it all ties together with a bit more focused storytelling. Not to say that there still aren't aspects of this story left to your imagination, but it's a bit more coherent overall. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3422211903 Visually, this game leans even more heavily into that old VHS vibe where the tape has been replayed so much that its visual fidelity has begun to fall apart; and it definitely also has a bit of that "found footage" style presentation in parts as well. The audio is all atmospheric and designed to keep you on edge while playing it. I think it's successful in providing said atmosphere. And while this is very definitely horror, the goal is really to give you a sense of trepidation while you explore rather than rely on actual scary moments to freak you out. I also appreciated how overall, this is a story highlighting aspects of a larger conspiracy while also presenting you with a creeping horror that has existed for a long time and will continue to exist for a long time still. I enjoyed the thought of all that. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3422211796 Overall, I thought this was a fun little experimental horror title that really gets everything it set out to do right. It took right at thirty minutes to complete, and so it's not really much of a time commitment either. Nicely done and worth a look.
The developer knows how to craft an eerie atmosphere, but the experience feels like it's missing several potential plot threads that could have been explored further, either with the organization or the pyramid itself. It feels more like an itch.io proof of concept rather than a full-fledged release.
I was SpoocledMacBoogled ((that's for sure)) So many moments gave me the heebeegeebees. The best (or worst) part is that the fungus that turns cicadas into zombies is real :o
A short, solid piece of Lovecraftian body horror.
Masterfully executed piece of interactive horror! It is really short but for the price it's good. The format in which it is presented works very well, so the narrative feels well paced, major plot points do come to an end in some way but still leaves a lot for speculation and theorizing. It is very disturbing and unnerving, but don't go into it expecting classic screamer horrror, this is better than that. It's one of those games that leaves you feeling a certain way and makes you uncomfortable (in the way a good horror game should) but it doesn't rely on being too grotesque or over-the-top. Happy to have played this and it goes straight to my CURSED GAMES list lol.
Piramida
A short analog found-footage horror adventure that blends walking simulator, interactive fiction, and experimental body horror into an interactive VHS tape. Reminiscent of Cave Crawler, is set around a mysterious inverted pyramid buried beneath the earth, it follows several interconnected protagonists (a team of scientists, an ambitious journalist, and an unfortunate camper) each uncovering a different piece of the same disturbing mystery. The fragmented narrative, delivered through exploration, documents and multiple perspectives, remains deliberately open to interpretation, though its disjointed structure and uneven writing often undermine the intrigue. Visually, the game fully embraces the analog horror aesthetic, pairing degraded VHS artifacts with retro PS1/3DO-era visuals and fuzzy found-footage presentation. The result recalls surreal late-night television horror, creating an unsettling, cold atmosphere that never feels like a mere gimmick. Body horror is used effectively, and the premise of the curse itself is genuinely disturbing, although the familiar "ancient evil beneath the ground" setup brings little originality to the genre. Where Pyramid Curse ultimately falters is scope. Lasting barely 30', it feels closer to an itch.io proof of concept than a fully realized release. The developer clearly knows how to build atmosphere, but the organization behind the expedition, the pyramid itself, and the psychological implications of its curse are only lightly sketched, leaving several promising narrative threads unexplored. The ending, much like the rest of the story, feels abrupt and lacking in payoff. Interaction remains minimal throughout, often resembling an interactive slideshow more than a conventional horror game. Exploration is generally straightforward, though the journalist chapters become tedious due to mandatory note hunting, while the rover sequences inside the pyramid combine tank controls with deliberately blurred visuals, making navigation clumsy without ever becoming truly frustrating. At times, the game's documentary-like approach overexplains its horror, where suggestion would have been more effective. Like the corrupted VHS tapes it imitates, Pyramid Curse is more memorable for the fragments it leaves behind than for the complete picture it tries to assemble. 5/10
