A fantastic sport management game, a must for any hockey fans! It has some great features, I love the fact you can select what year you want to play in, challenge mode is great. One of those games you can keep coming back to for some more!
you can go as indepth as you want, to a low key gm, that just runs a team. still havent really gone too deep, but i like everything about it so far, much improved compaired to ehm 3 (the last i bought) I paid $20 for it and it is well worth it at that price!

It's good, but I'm terrible at this game
I've been playing this game since EHM. Each time I get the itch to play it I sink some more hours in, play through a couple of seasons, and then feel hollow afterwards. There isn't enough feedback on tactics, owner expectations, or career progression. Trading mechanics are decent, but the AI consistently makes bad decisions when trading with other AI teams. Trading is also slanted in the AI's favor as the over-value assets and require too much in return. Scouting is improved over previous versions. Tactics are my biggest complaint as they seem to make little difference in outcomes and there's no real way to know if they're working or not. There isn't really a point to playing the games out as there isn't any control in-game to adjust tactics or make changes. It seems like a lot of these issues have been addressed in FHM 9, so I'm sure I'll crack and try that one next.
It's a decent game. I'm writing this review from the perspective of someone who's relatively new to hockey. If you have been holding a stick and skating since you were 3 and are an absolute encyclopedia of pro hockey, both the game, history, and strategy, I would imagine you'd be quite pleased (version 10 is out as of this writing). My criticism of the game is that it's almost TOO realistic. There are easier modes and you can give a lot of responsibility to an assistant, but if you don't follow the NHL or other pro hockey very closely with an encyclopedic knowledge, you probably will be blown away by the complexity and options. I know the game of hockey itself rather well but the complexities of being a GM and coach, including roster building, managing scouting, contracts, majors/minors, free agency was overwhelming for me and put me off from playing it for a while, so just be prepared for that. I never bought v8 or v9 but am considering 10. The other disappointment (which I hear has been changed in recent versions) is that while you can create custom leagues, it's not very user-friendly. When selecting the league format, there's nothing telling you how the playoff format will work, is it division, is it wild card. And also I was hoping to just create a fictional league with dropping in real teams. Can't do that. Have my own league but still use AHL/CHL as farm leagues...can't do that. Play through an Olympic tournament as a one-off without a league. Can't do that. So creation is good but needs some work for flexibility. Bottom line: Probably very great for hockey enthusiast. But if you're not an encyclopedia on pro hockey you can get lost in the complexity very quickly. Too many things are not explained, the menu system is not user-friendly, and the customization (the main selling point for me) is good but too inflexible and not well-documented. I'd give it 4.5 potential but 2.5 ability, because I think this CAN be the best hockey game franchise out there if it were better documented, simpler to operate, had difficulty levels and better customization
I think this is a fantastic game, for what it is. That's really the most important thing potential purchasers need to know. This is NOT EA Sports NHL series. You do NOT control the actual hockey gameplay. You do everything but that. So if you want to control your players on the ice, this game isn't for you. If you are a person who likes Be A GM mode in the EA NHL series, this game is very much for you. This is Be A GM Mode on steroids. Do you want to take on the Seattle Kraken in their inaugural season and guide them to a championship by 2025? You can do that. Do you want to assume control of the Hartford Whalers when the WHA folded up in 1979? Doing that right now. It's great. I managed to win the Cup by '82 through good drafting and development (Hello, Paul Coffey, Andy Moog, and Bernie Nicholls!) and a few blockbuster trades (Mark Howe for Mike Gartner, straight up). You can shepherd teams in leagues across the world. Pick a KHL team, or a Deutsche League team. Pick any country in the world and run their national team. And I'll tell ya, the player stats and development is GOOD. Like "consistently surprising me" with how good it is. As an Avalanche fan, for example, I wouldn't expect virtually anyone else to know 3rd round prospect from 2019, Alex Beaucage. Beaucage is a guy with a wicked shot but is a bad skater. That is totally represented in this game. As a hockey nerd, if you are one, you will consistently appreciate that attention to detail. Graphically, this game is nothing to write home about. It's a game you mostly play in a series of menus and stat sheets. As long as you know that, and like it, you will like this game.
Great game I’m in a online league as a GM so much fun.
good price, good game
Better each edition. While the 3D gameview is very basic, it is still much better for being able to adjust strategy because you can see how the computer is playing rather than guessing off of text descriptions of the action. The manager interface and roster/training options are good. The sense of seeing your team progress as you build the roster and "coach 'em up" is very satisfying if you're a die-hard hockey fan that dreams of guiding a team to glory. Worth every penny many times over.
