I'm just going to be up front with it because this game doesn't really deserve more. If it looks like the kind of game you would enjoy and you can catch it for like 5 dollars, grab it. Do NOT pay full price for this game. This was baby's first asset flip and it shows. Before we get into the details I want to point out some other pirate games that are actually worth your money that you might consider checking out instead of Captain Bones. Salt 2 - Shores of Gold - 19.99 USD Salt - 14.99 USD Assassin's Creed: Black Flag - 39.99USD Sea of Thieves 2025 - 39.99USD Abandon Ship - 25.00 USD Atlas - 29.99 They took the Ark engine and assets and made a pirate game that's unfinished and garbage and could have been incredible (see my review) my favorite game of all time no joke. If you're a diehard pirate person, this game and a modded server are the way to go. DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE. Sid Meier's Pirates! 2004 Edition - 9.99 Blood and Gold: Caribbean! - 19.99 Pixel Piracy - 14.99 Risen 3 - Titan Lords - 14.99 Sailwind - 19.99 Sail Forth - 19.99 Sea of Survivors - 6.99 Carribbean Sail - 14.99 Uncharted Waters Online - FREE Alright if you must have the nitty-gritty of why exactly you should avoid this game, here you go... The survival mechanics are just there to pad things out. I LOVE survival usually. Not here. There's hyperactive hunger and thirst bars that basically force you to farm trees or fish in the early game and ships in the late game. Obtuse mechanics for saving - you have to craft a campfire which becomes a save point as long as you have a special stick to start the fire. The shark serves no purpose other than to annoy the player. Meanwhile the fishing minigame is brainless as is chopping to gather cocounuts. At the same time, you know how everyone's favorite thing about Breath of the Wild was your weapon breaking every five minutes? That's here too. The ability to turn all of this and player damage off at any time does not excuse it. The AI is barebones and dumb as they come. In melee combat it's not TOO noticeable, but it's still too easy once you figure out the one attack pattern every enemy has. This is even worse when applied to ships. The aiming system is pretty bad for the cannons, the ships are programmed to just try and keep you on their broadside, and that is their ONLY GOAL in maneuvering. It's ridiculously easy to either get behind the ship and be in no danger or bait them into getting stuck. There was a lot of missed basic stuff that makes the fact we're in 1.0 now absolutely disgraceful. Everything from basic spelling and grammatical errors that a free spellcheck program would have picked up, to to the fact that - check this out - You have to build a campfire to save the game. I thought I would be clever and built my save point ON my ship. However the campfire does not snap to the ship - it floats in the air while your ship bobs up and down with the waves, treating the campfire as an immovable object! Do you know where I did this? I did it at the ONE and ONLY respawn point. I cannot break the campfire. 12 hours into a save I just have to deal with it and damage my ship every time I respawn at the port. FUN FACT. Close to the end of the game you get a cook station that doubles as a mobile save point on your ship IN THE EXACT POSITION WHERE MY CAMPFIRE IS. My boat just does barrel rolls while my crew look helplessly to me from the deck. Another error is that I got the ultra rare (0.4% of people have it right now) achievement for completing the game without killing any townsfolk. I farmed townsfolk for gold on several occasions while I figured the game out. Understand this, I was a big problem for a lot of innocent people. But I got the ultra rare good boy trophy for not killing all those people I killed. The music is okay but totally generic and on too short of a loop. The audio in general is horribly imbalanced. The main character sounds like Ronald Weasly impersonating Harry Potter and all of the lines are over ennunciated in a first-year theater-kid's best Europea-Generica BritEngland accent. Thankfully they did four or five takes on the line FIRE THE CANNONS! which he will yell every time you fire your cannons. You'll hear it in your sleep. And prepare to ruin your pants every SINGLE time you transform until you've got the powerup that keeps it from hurting, because the man sounds like he was shot in real life every time it happens. The graphics are a common asset pack that is associated with low-quality shovelware. This game reinforces that stereotype regardless of how hard I fought to give it a chance. There's only a handful of main quests, almost all of which are unimaginative and a dozen or so side quests. All the side quests seem to amount basic fetch quests. The storyline in general is pretty generic and anyone that's been reading or writing for a while will see the twists coming. Credit where it's due though, what they were trying to do was really cool. Except this game has one of the laziest endings I've ever seen. The game just STOPS. All of a sudden. No hint that the end is coming - you're just wandering along following quest markers and BAM! 10 second cutscene and back to the title screen! Being able to play after the game ends is a bonus because the simple gameplay can be fun from time to time if you don't have anything better, or don't want to get into anything too complicated. I say that but I don't see me ever opening this game again. The economy might as well not exist for all the weird quirks. Vendors will only buy their specific stock. No, not only specific KINDS of items. Vendors will only buy items that they themselves already sell. Food vendors only buy foods they sell, and only to a maximum of one stack. The game baits you into holding onto all these flintlock pistols worth 1300 apiece, but no vendor I could find would buy them. Things like iron ingots you can only buy one place, so instead of exploring to a few places and adventuring and fighting ships between ports while things restock, you're stuck loading the game over and over and cheesing the three pirates between you and that one source of iron. The one place the game could have USED some padding. Maybe this is nitpicking but there's no way to not be a murdering pirate in this. No headcanon that you're a certified good sailor just trying to set things right. You HAVE to murder traders and navy soldiers and pirates. There is no 'I'll just grind trade so I don't have to murder anyone'. Whether that's a negative is up to you It's very clear that someone's ambition outshone their energy, their ability, their funding or a combination of the three. It feels like someone was really trying to make something and at some point just said 'screw it' and phoned it in. To the point that I'm genuinely upset that I'm unable to refund this 'game'. It's 3 hours of 6/10 fun in a 12 hour package that ends the date with the dev thanking you for your 20 dollars and evacuating their bowels into your mouth which will be eagerly agape in confusion as you watch the ending they have provided for you. Please go back up and look at my list of alternative pirate games.
This game is not Full Release quality by any reasonable standard. This game shouldn't be listed as anything past Alpha grade. There are game breaking bugs, main storyline quests to locate the relic of light (or whatever its called), its no where in the game, you can only get it by a glitch, I found youtube videos of this game from over a year ago, and they had the same problem. The quest intros are written in broken english and some are downright useless. The UI breaks and points all over the map some times. I spent 2 hours stuck "in combat" with a ship I boarded, looted and killed the whole crew, then sank it and yet somehow its still attacking me. I built a cook station on my ship as required in a quest and its floating in the air off the island where my ship was parked when i completed the quest. The combat is simple and for a laid back game like this I understand, but looting your spoils to get rich as a pirate...nope. I found 1 cloth merchant who you do one of maybe 2 sidequests in the game for and once you give him his 10 cloth for that he doesn't buy any more for the rest of the game cause his stock is full. I looted over a half dozen short pirate pistols worth a pretty penny, and no vendor in the game will buy them. There are several other items in game where you are just letting them stockpile for no reason other then the fact you can't mass drop a stack of 99 rocks so if you want to clear them out you gotta do the drag and drop outside your inventory menu 99 times. My biggest regret is that it took me 6ish hours to hit the major bugs in the game and Steam doesn't want to do a refund. Go play Assassins Creed Black Flag and do not buy this game. It Sucks
not much content, the quests are super buggy, the story feels really incomplete, combat is so easy u literally just spam click, naval combat is even worse jump off your boat they stop dead u board them and its game over for the ai.... i did finish the game because i didnt want to waste my money however i really feel as if i did still. i think this game could of been amazing it just needed to be finished and polished atm i would rate it 2/10
Yeah cant bring myself to finish this game. its completely unpolished. the fighting is always the same. exiting a boat or boarding a boad is a nightmare. even one of the swords its not the most expensive yet its double the damage of the most expensive one. shops that dont accept equipment you want to sell so you get stuck with that equipment forever. and then when you need to upgrade your ship its asking for 3x the shops maximum supply. so you need to come back over 3 days to get enough equipment for an upgrade. all basic issues that need to be fixed. I cant fathom why this game is currently over 80% positive. 6/10 at best.
Captain Bones Review This game is worth keeping an eye on, but do not spend your money on it at this time. The game is just very unpolished. Clearly an early access game, but it is concerning that it is listed as a full release. List of errors, not necessary bugs that I found in he first 60 minutes of playing. Nothing I found was game breaking, but just not a finished game. Should be placed back into early access until the game is more polished. The are numerous spelling errors, not that my spelling is perfect. The animations are very basic and at times, like fishing, annoying. During the "tutorial" the item prompts, display over the tutorial text, making both unreadable. While walking around you will receive a prompt to pick up items even when no items are there. While chopping down trees you can walk away from the tree but continue to chop the tree down. Item hit boxes are strange. During the tutoiral you need to hunt a snake. Mine was near a tree. When throwing the spear, the spear was hitting the tree hit box which was over lapping the snake. What I saw was a spear floating in mid air right in front of the snake. With most "crafting" games the tutorial will have you build things like wooded swards, spears and hammers, but this games has you find them. Kind of goes against the whole crafting genre. Crafting is done with the blueprint style, where you place the blueprint on the ground and build with the needed resources. Most game that do it this way allow you to start building the blueprint with the resources you have, and maybe you need to go and find any remaining resources. But this game you can not start building until you have all the needed resources. The problems is, in this game when you place the blueprint, the opacity is so low, in some locations, it is is very difficult to find where you placed the blueprint. When you sail, you need to adjust the sails to catch the wind. The indication in most games would be that the sails are full and being pushed by the wind. In this game there is a percentage indicator in the bottom of the screen. The fighting control is very minimal. It is very hard to tell when to strike and if the strike is going to hit. There is very little to no indication when to strike. You just hold a single button and hope it hits. Many object animations have zero interaction. In the tutorial when the shark attacks, after kicking the shark, it swims through the middle of my raft to get away. Some prompts are hard to tell what they mean. When sailing you press "E" to drop. What the heck is drop while sailing. When completing missions there are HUD indicators of where to go to complete the mission, but at times those indicators disappear. You have to turn away from the indicator for it to show again to find out where to go. There are positives about the game. I like the throwing indicator when hunting. I like the items are effected by gravity. I, for the most part, enjoy the sailing.
At a few months past full release, the game definitely feels unfinished and a bit short. Playing around some of the jank as a bit fun, but I don't think the game is worth the $20 price tag the developer has slapped on it. I bought it while on sale for $14 and still feel like I over paid. It definitely feels like the developer published as a full release because they were either done or wanted to boost sales and not because the game was ready.
Not a fun experience. Very glitchy and reached a fullstop glitch at the Sunken Temple mission. If you are looking for a good pirate game besides Black Flag, play the SeaDogs games.
