This was a tough one for me to review. It's not quite a thumbs down because it has so many things it does right for point and click adventure. But at the same time, I didn't like so much of it and felt it had some short comings. It's one area where if Steam had a middle thumb that would be my review. I couldn't in good faith give it a thumbs down though so thumbs up it is. Starting off with the good, the art style and audio in this game really sets the mood and is what originally attracted me to play it. It's excellent, and has that creepy vibe and psychological horror aspect down pat. First chapter was so good, and really hooked me in. Chapter 2, was more of the same. Up to this point the puzzles were logical and the story really pulled me in. I feel once you get to Chapter 3 the story really gets off the rails and the dynamic of the game changes. You go from a creepy mental ward sort of story to being in fairytale land Fran has in her head. Some of the puzzles start to really get obtuse and I often found myself having to reach for a guide even as an old school player such as myself. Lots of the puzzles or ways to continue the story would not open up until you triggered them either with one specific item you found in an obscure location. Or you need to have a conversation with a specific NPC that you overlooked. It also goes from a dual reality with the pills to a seasonal reality that you can alter 4x which made every location an even greater challenge. It would get to the point of frustrating while you'd hunt around for quite some time to really not have received much direction on where to go next. Some people I am sure loved it, but I found myself struggling to get through it. At the end the story without giving away spoilers it just ended kind of abruptly and either I didn't understand it or it just sort of ended on a cliffhanger without really answering much. While the pacing of Chapter 1-3 felt perfect, Chapter 4 & 5 felt rushed. So Overall, not my favorite. Glad to have finally finished it as it was on my list awhile. But in the end was kind of disappointing to me after the great start of the game. Some of the achievements felt bugged as well, if you're hunting for those you'll likely need a guide for a handful of them that require very specific clicks or interactions to unlock and they're easy to miss.
The most fun i've ever had in a puzzle game. Its story, lore, and puzzles are all amazing. I'd recomend this to anyone who can tolerate dark themes.
I was obsessed with this game when I was a kid. I loved the story, the simbolism, and the horror aspect so much I even created fanart of alot of the characters on my school sheets. The artstyle was so cute and adorable too. I will never talk bad about this game because its so beautifull.
