so so fun. it looks amazing, the assets are kitschy, spooky, colorful, and clearly rendered with love. i enjoy the versatility of creative work that went into this, especially the 90s news segments with real actors and staged protests. even the UI and sound effects are so satisfying and cohesive. the attention to detail transforms Forbidden Solitaire from card game to experience. the solitaire gameplay itself is fun and simple, definitely on the easier side, i only lost a handful of times. i did appreciate that there are multiple ways to win each level, and new card functions are abundant as the game progresses. the only thing that fell short for me was that this game was not as scary as i was hoping. especially after reading the detailed content warning (nice), i was anticipating the scares to go much further, akin to the flagship media of the analog horror genre, but Forbidden Solitaire stays in the cartoonishly spooky camp. even though i was expecting a bit more fear factor, that being said, the game accomplishes its goal incredibly effectively of 90s cartoonish spookiness. it feels like an episode of Goosebumps you're not supposed to be watching and then when you sneak to the tv at midnight to watch it, it gives you nightmares for years. amazing. i love solitaire. i love forbidden solitaire.
Forbidden Solitaire is my favorite kind of game. A game knows exactly what it wants to be! In this case it is a cheesy creepy pasta for some mid 90s game. Gameplay wise, it's a bunch of levels of solitaire game strung together with the story of adventuring through a dungeon. Mechanics are inspired by adventuring through it in this beautiful cheesy way too. Lots of battles done with cards because... WHY NOT! What makes this really shine is the meta narrative spliced in. It adds to the whole experience telling the story of the games development and brings up the spook factor just enough. You can tell the development team put a lot of love and care into this. Love like that makes the game just feel just that bit more special. PS: I must commend the excellent trigger warning PDF as well as a making of PDF that got added (It only shows up in game when you have beaten it).
mmmm crystal
This game is VERY scary but also very addicting. I like the concept of playing a game inside of another game. Very creative! 8/10
Very good
Cool game with the 90's feel
If you're tired of AAA slop that feels exactly the same as every other game, play this instead. The love and care these two studios have put into this, and the creativity too, is absolutely wonderful. I really enjoyed reading through the making of info after finishing the game, so much heart was put into this thing. Gameplay wise I don't usually care for solitaire, but it feels addictive to play here. Some luck is involved but it doesn't feel completely random. It felt great to build combos and clear cards. The visuals and intrigue push you forward. There's an option to turn off jump scares in the settings, which I much preferred. Really good fun, doesn't outstay its welcome and right for the price imo. I hope these studios collab more in future!
really good game, fun way to tell the story
