Ok, I'm an hour in and I'll just give you an early review so far and make changes as I go along. At the beginning I was really hooked because the developer did a great job of set design for the "home" scene. It felt like they had a degree in interior design and did such a great job. With that much care to the beginning going forward I was hoping for a really good run. Then we jumped into the back end of the university and walked through a fire destroyed building owned by the garden keeper who's been working here for 20 years. It doesn't look like a fire trashed the interior as it looks more like a crack house. I immediately felt like I'm playing another one of many "Made With Unity" engine horror games where you must find notes and get keys to unlock doors. As we proceed to enter the actual university it does not look like a university and more a secret lab complete with body bags laid out for a number of people. Encountering my first baddie was not a fun experience. You are told not to fight and just block with your crowbar. That's fine but in a game like Outlast you could run and sneak under things, hide in closets, etc. There's none of that here so far. You are merely trying to run and this guy is already panting within 5 seconds. The running is very slow and numerous times the woman chasing me was faster than myself and struck me several times. You are ultimately trying to get a key to unlock a door to trigger an event to avoid the baddie. So far, not enjoying it but I'm going to continue the journey as some others said the beginning wasn't great but it gets better. I will update with an honest review as I go further. 1.8 hours in and there's at least one baddie you'll run from. The first area is a single tight room and there is no option to hide inside anything put under a desk. The A.I. design is not great as just when you duck under the desk they ignore you and then go about their own path. A little later you will unlock a wider area for them to roam and if they see you and run after you if for example, you go inside a bathroom stall and they were right behind you, the A.I. will again ignore the fact that you are there and go about its normal path. It should be intelligent enough to open the door and drag you out but that's not the way they designed it. You will reach a point where you unlock a wider area of the university (it does look more like a university as you go along) and it may be a bit of a head scratcher as to what you are supposed to do and find a way out of the area. Took me a while to figure it out. I'm halfway through the game as another posted a video of the 4 hour run they did to reach the end. PROPS to the dev team for the first ever crotch grabbing ghoul I think I've ever seen on Steam! :) It is getting a little better but I'm going to see where all this goes. They've piled a lot of gore in the game throughout and for myself that doesn't always make the best of horror. Outlast 2 did this and I found it unnecessary. I've found enough notes to know pretty much what happened here but there is very little in actual story to tell you what is going on. So far it's all about finding the notes that tell you. Finished the game at 4 hours and I liked the second half more than the first. You will get answers and an ending that closes out the story proper. It's not a great game though. I wouldn't recommend at 20 bucks. For a small dev team of 2 people I would like to see now what more they can do with a second game now that they have more experience.
ITS TOO CRAZY
this game would be enjoyed by fans of resident evil, silent hill and outlast. The game is a bit rough around the edges with that 'indie' feel, but if you can overlook that, there is a lot of great work here. The story wasn't overly in depth but was enough to keep me going on.
Great game!
I enjoyed this, but it is not without it's frustrations. The atmosphere and visuals are fab, but the monsters are too much "on you" towards the end. Meaning they should have larger patrol routes so we think our way around them, not for them just to go straight to you and pace back and forth in front of your hiding space. Oh, and VR doesn't work.
