Playability isn't very smooth, game design is not very clear and there are some buggy parts; it has not been updated or improved throughout the years.
Feels like a very well done student game. Clearly a lot of effort has gone into it, the game has some neat ideas, some fun boss mechanics but overall it just falls a little flat. Not going to be too critical to the game, as the seeing as the developers have already fallen off the edge of the world, but it is a very bland, tedious game and really isn't worth your time.
controls and gameplay feel like ass
Игра крутая и интересная
for such a simple game they could at least make the graphics sharp instead of pixelated. its not very fun at all.
This is going to be a complicated review and honestly not very flattering of the game. So to start I will begin with the games high points, and dredge on about the many lows. This game is charming. Its a very cool concept and I think the Rock, Paper, Scissors aspect of your character and how it intertwines into combat is interesting. Its a platformer through and through and the way the theme and art can take different forms through the game was something I found very refreshing. Now the bad, and what I have to say is bad. I dont want to be too harsh but I need to be. So, in no particular order, here are my faults with this game. Lets begin with the music, very repetitive and samey throughout. While I found myself humming along to the music up until the end, you cant deny it doesent have a lot of depth or variety. Big complaint up next is the games insistence on using pixel perfect jumps to progress. I walk into an area, spend an hour trying to find a different route and trying different things (checkpoint starting me before a bunch of annoying obstacles), and I literally gave up. I quit the game and walked away. Then I came back, then I quit again. I might have done that one more time. Then on the fourth try, I figured what did I have to lose but trying to literally just jump. And despite it looking impossible, it was the solution. I saw this a couple times in this game and I found it incredibly dumb. This was on the second level and I just felt like its not necessary. There is a large part of me that wishes I just stayed away instead of being stubborn. Keyboard and Mouse time! Oh my lanta, the game was not developed with Kb&m AT ALL. Literally you use arrow keys and QWE, its just something that took me off guard. Considering I had to randomly press keys during the start of the game to figure out what the controls were. Oh did I mention no menu? Oh no, thats not true. Because I found out halfway through the game that the menu was on the 'ENTER' key. ENTER KEY. WHY Is it on the enter key? And how was I supposed to find this out? On to the next complaint. When it comes to the Rock, Paper, Scissors mechanic, I found it just didnt make sense sometimes. One thing that you think would work, doesent. So it kind of devolves into throwing whatever you can at the enemies and seeing what actually works. Not super intuitive. Perhaps that comes with the territory of such a game though. Next! The start up sound. Enough to blow your eardrums out. If you play this be aware that starting up the game is loud! Checkpoint system. Overall Id say the game had a pretty decent checkpoint system but in some levels its borderline atrocious. Lava level specifically. You would think that after spending 10 minutes riding a rock through a lava lake that it would give you a checkpoint. NOPE. Enjoy going back to the beginning of the level. The heart system, the life blood (Literally) of a game. Hearts in the game should be a system that rewards you for small quests or collecting coins. Although in this game hearts were just a stop gap and rather then affording you the ability to make more mistakes, they were MANDATORY to acquire because the devs would throw so much unavoidable attacks or enemies at you that you gotta use those hearts to just tank all the dumb projectiles you cant dodge. Not a healthy system. Bosses next. Most of them feel mundane and with no real challenge, with most of the challenge being annoying attributes and mechanics rather then engaging gameplay and strategies. Theres borderline zero ability to see any wind up effects and to assume what attack is coming. Too close? Freeze breath and you should have been at the opposite end of the screen. Too far? Lava pool under your feet and you should have been closer. Some bosses allow you to stand there and never move and dodge all of their attacks, others you just CANT dodge. Its unfortunate as some of the bosses were really interesting thematically. Some of the bosses were only beatable because I got crazy good RNG, by the way RNG means that you might go through 15 phases to have a chance to attack its health bar, or you might go through 1. Interactions in this game just sometimes didnt make sense. Which direction to go or random little tidbits throughout. Was I supposed to walk to the left side, the right side, or back where I came? I dont remember every annoying interaction but its just a handful of zero direction from the game devs that make you feel like it can be a lot of trial and error. Alright, thats the basic complaints done. Theres a few more things that either spoil or might be too harsh so I will put it under the spoiler tag.
How unoriginal and uninspiring are the last set of bosses. It is literally just all of the previous bosses you already fought, in order, to fight again. They just phoned it in to that degree. No changes, no extra attacks, no interesting mechanics added to the fights. Just "heres the boss you fought in level 1, 2, 3... e.t.c". The only thing to change is the environments slightly, which I find actually makes the fights annoying. Exposure times being reduced because they assume you'll use your new powers to cheese old bosses although the bosses do not change to reflect it, and environments being slightly different which means you need to add in more movement to hit the same locations. This aspect is just so lazy and needless. Fighting Hex, the second to last boss. Huge bug where randomly she will break and run backwards off screen. Never to show up again. I had to have fought her 100 times and reset through the menu atleast 95 of those times. There was no rhyme or reason, she just runs off screen and you hear infinite pitter patter of feet. I'm a completionist so I was really interested in finishing the game but cmon. Sometimes it was at the final hit, other times the moment the fight started. After beating that part I was annoyed to find out that the entire events of this game could have been avoided if only for the impossible task of COMMUNICATION. Imagine that. No instead Im just lied to and avoided by my best friend and sent on a journey to stop her. If she had kept me in the loop on the plan Id have probably helped her. Its insane to learn the plot twist is be being gaslighted. Also at the end of the game she says something along the lines of "Im sorry I had to do this alone" BUT YOU DIDNT, YOU HAD YOUR HIGH HEEL WEARING MINIMUM WAGE WORKER TIED UP IN A BAG WHO YOU TRUSTED ENOUGH TO INFORM ABOUT YOUR ENTIRE PLAN. So minimum wage servant is worth telling, best friend is not. Coolio. Ending one, I get left behind on a island and thats it. Wow they really abused this little flat boy huh. The amount of care he had for everyone in that kingdom and not only was he forced to do all of the dirty work but they just abandoned him. Ending two because Im a completionist and I wanted the 100% ending. Interesting, lame that the actual actual final boss just reused the exact same spells as the final boss but it is what it is. I dont know what to make of the final cutscene but Its lore none the less. On the subject of final fights, that last boss was awesomely designed. It was really cool to go through the whole game and see the 3d King and the circle fight. Tornados were worthless, bubbles were fun, fire was mechanically abusable. Really only the rock spike and orbs were a threat. Although it was a good battle. Ended on a high note. Thats most of my complains, final thoughts below.
Last of my review will be in a comment, as I have maxed out the characters in this review.
While it's been far too long since I last played Flat Kingdom for me to be able to say anything about the quality of the gameplay, that's because the game has some kind of bug that means it can't be run anymore, and so I have to disrecommend it. edit: the specific bug that prevents the game does have a fix, but right before you'd beat the second zone it turns out there's yet another game breaking glitch that leaves you unable to progress and complete the level, and even if that glitch does have some way of solving it, at the point where you're unable to play through the game unless you find some obscure fix for two or more bugs, a game really should not be bought and probably shouldn't even be on the market.
