I tried to like this game because of its origins and I was curious about it but I can safely say this game isnt for most people playing games in this millennia. + Graphics are great. Pixel art and animations are so detailed and the various weather and magic effects look amazing. + Quality of life features make this game playable in this millennia. I couldnt get past thirty minutes without them. + The game is very charming in places, it has a nice vibe to it. + Not having mana but number of casts in different tiers is very DnD like and I enjoyed it. - Encounter rate is crazy high. You cant walk ten steps without fighting someone. This can ruin the game as the map is pretty big and you will encounter a lot of boring enemies to slog through. Thankfully encounters can be turned off in the menu. An absolute lifesaver. - The RPG mechanics, story, maps, itemization is pretty limited. Yes, back then it was amazing, nowadays its pretty terrible. - Sometimes its not clear on where you should go next. - More could have been done to smooth out this game for 2026 audience. Honestly only ever play this if you are curious about the origin of FF or have nostalgia for it. For most people this isnt an enjoyable game to play and the overwhelmingly positive rating here dont mean the game is amazing.

After never playing any Final Fantasy game before (other than like, 10 hours on XIV), I decided to go back and play all of them, in chronological order. a FF marathon, if you will. And while the first game is almost 40 years old, and the story is rather shallow for what the genre has defined itself to be in modern times, it was still a game I enjoyed thoroughly, and I have no complaints worth talking about, despite how dated it may initially feel. The story is rather shallow, as I said earlier, and also rather short (took me 20 hours to 100% everything), but it's fullfilling. Every question it makes you ask, it always provides an answer. The combat, while simple and what you'd expect for a 40 year old turn based rpg, was engaging, and the final boss felt satisfying to beat. The overall difficulty is pretty low, and I imagine it only gets harder in later games, there wasnt a time where it didnt feel worth it to play. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and would highly recommend as a newcomer to the FF series
Overall, a good fun game especially given the era of games it was made in. The overhauled graphics and quality of life improvements that have been added in this port makes this a worthwhile game, especially if you want to start from where it all began for this series.
So this is where the warrior of light started! It's awesome and inspirational to witness this beautifull world! <3 Pixel Remaster version adds all the quality of life features a modern player can ask for this game. Beautifully done and very fun.

Overall an excellent remaster that adds a lot in terms of quality of life. Broken spells from the original game are fixed and the addition of maps and a chest tracker are particularly helpful. Other inclusions like the bestiary and art gallery are also a very nice addition.
