I love this game, but I have to be completely honest: there’s very little that feels truly “remastered” here. The environments are the original ones, the cutscenes are the original ones, the music as well. The only real improvements are the character models and a few pieces of artwork. I’m sorry, but I expected much more. It’s 2026 — updating the textures or remaking the videos in HD wouldn’t have required that much effort. This feels more like a marketing move than a genuine remaster.
The launcher fails to open on first launch. After manually creating a config.txt file, the launcher opens but the Settings menu is inaccessible, making it impossible to change the game language.
My favorite Final Fantasy game. The music, GFs, fighting, monsters, junction system...it's so well done. This Remastered version is amazing. While the graphical improvements like the player models are great, the addition I love the most is the 'Game Speed Boost x3'. It's SUCH a great way to maximize what you can accomplish, save time, etc. You can use it at will. I play with an XBox controller and all I have to do is press the Left Stick and it activates. Press it again to deactivate. You can use it anywhere except for cutscenes. It's so dang useful!! There's other stuff that Remastered allows you to do, I just haven't looked into 'em. FF7 was my first FF game and I cherish it greatly (better story and characters imo), but FF8 just grabs a hold of me in more ways. I love it so so much. Highly recommend it! Especially this Remastered version. The 'Game Speed Boost x3' alone is worth it.
rinoa aynı ben :P
This game is often a mishmash of so many different ideas and mechanics thrown together, whether it be in the plot or just the way the gameplay is designed. I think it's carried entirely by the characters and a bunch of very memorable moments. If you are actually invested in the main cast by the halfway point (when the story begins to derail), you might feel inclined to be at least a little bit generous towards what the writers are doing and trying to set up. But then the story keeps going on getting even more convoluted and you have to actively shut off your brain because trying to make any sense gets beyond reason. This game is at its best when the focus of the story is more personal and it's trying to explore Squall's growth, his relationship (or lack thereof) with his friends and eventually, his feelings towards Rinoa. Unfortunately they decided to throw in a very undercooked time travel plot and all the shenanigans that come with it. Still, there's a lot to enjoy while you turn a blind eye to everything happening around you. The combat system might not be fun initially but it gets a lot better when you learn how to break it. You have to create your own balance though or you'll be one-shotting everything because as far as balancing is concerned, the devs just slapped on enemy scaling and called it an honest days work. Thankfully, this design philosophy lends itself very well to breaking the game as early as 1-2 hours in. The music is obviously also amazing considering it's a Final Fantasy game. All the big emotional payoffs are made so much more impactful thanks to the great music (especially that beautiful space sequence, one of my absolute favorites in any game ever). The character writing is also pretty good and the NPCs in towns also generally have interesting stuff to say. Of all the PS1 era Final Fantasy games, this is the one that could use a remake the most. It was also the same before FF7 remakes because I think 7 holds up so much better than 8 does- at least on PC with the large modding community that FF7 has. This game on the other hand is locked to 4:3 aspect ratio and you get a very cinematic 15/16 fps in battles. I wish they eventually decide to do a remake for 8, and also maybe a Crisis Core-esque expansion for Laguna. Of all the flaws FF8 has, there is a really amazing game in there somewhere.
The game itself is solid. This port in particular sucks though. It is a hastily done hack job not deserving of a steam page The main problem is that the framerate in battles is fixed so low it is like watching a slideshow, which I guess was fine back in the day but in modern times we have come to expect more. There are no moguri or memoria mods like ff9 to fix the problems so I guess if you want to have an optimal experience I suggest you buy the original steam release and mod the hell out of it. And if you play it for your first time refer to a guide since there are a lot of missable collectibles and content in this game. Hey, wanna play cards?
final fantasy is the best at telling tragic love stories. squall is one of the most well-written protagonists in the series. realistic, complex and someone you can relate to. i’d love to see a remake. just because it’s an older game doesn’t mean it’s bad, and if you’ve enjoyed other final fantasy games you should definitely give this one a try!
the first FF game i ever play. my top favorite in the series. a most play for FF fans.
4:3 scale and still have to download high rez movies and textures to make it look better. Extremely lazily done game.
