FINAL FANTASY IX

To start this review I'll just say FFVII is my favourite videogame of all time, and I replayed it several times throughout the years (the original version, not the remakes) and that FF VIII was amazing to me, even if not as good as FF VII. This is going to be the first negative review of an FF game I'll ever make, and here's why: For starters, in regards to art style and world building, they did a much poorer job blending the Magic/Fantasy elements with the Sci-Fi/Technological ones in the same seamless way they had done the both aforementioned predecessors. Also the character design saw a return to the small bodied/big headed child like design of FF VII in contrast with the evolution in character design the was present in FF VIII. Maybe in part due to that, I thought much of the dialogue and charachter personalities and their developement was a bit too juvenile, bordering on childish, so that's actually a step back. I also prefered the magic system of both previous games (Materia and Junction) to the one used in this game (simply named Ability, but that was in practice more janky and complicated). Combat and gameplay wise, it still kept the soul of the Final Fantasy series, even despite the inflated cost of magic during combats and the fact that different characters were way more specific in their habilities so there had to be much more thought put into building your party in order for it to be well rounded and even then, something would probably be lacking against specific opponents wich happened less in previous games. I mentioned this game kept the soul of previous FF games but the heart was missing. I don't consider this a bad game, especially since the bar was set really high, but it was in my opinion one, if not two steps back when compared to them. I clocked at about 34h (through two atempts at a playthrough) and gave up cus I didn't feel like playing any further. I can understand why many people would enjoy this, especially if it was their first FF experience but after playing the both superb VII and VII I felt this was lacking in several aspects and this is my honest take on the game.
