Best FF game
Definitely worth a grab while it's on sale. For me this game is not just a blast of nostalgia, it is a re-appreciation of a timeless classic. The music, the story, and the character development; not to mention solid, traditional JRPG turn-based combat. Playing through it about 15 years since I played it last, I picked up on so many things I missed before. Really great game. If you're keen to get into the older Final Fantasy's for the first time, I strongly recommend this one!
Aged very poorly and people overrate its greatness, understandably so, you can still feel the magic of old. 8/10
本來我的個人排名是 6 > 9 > 3 重溫一次中文化的版本之後 現在9排名在最前面了 希望趕快重製
An amazing game with a great story and characters that still is one of Square's best. The combat is pure classic final fantasy you know and love along with the ability system that is not that hard to get used to. The only thing I never like is the difficulty spike at the end. Just weird out of nowhere the enemies hit like a truck when I was doing fine in the prior dungeons. Well hopefully if there ever is a remake it is more faithful to the original and does not go insane like the FF7 games have been.
Despite being two and a half decades old, Final Fantasy IX has aged beautifully. The presentation is stellar for its age, squeezing everything it could out of old hardware to provide impressive graphics, great sound design, catchy music, and sprawling set pieces. The combat is dynamic, with the FF series' Active Time Battle system fusing real time action and turn based combat very well, which ultimately makes combat more engaging and fun once you get past the learning curve. The characters are awesome, featuring entertaining personalities, memorable designs, fun movesets, and unique motivations, overall leading me to get attached. On top of that, one of my least favorite things in games like this is being forced to choose between party members and having to be intentional about changing them out, and this game helps mitigate that issue by having many instances in the story force a particular party, especially in the early game, which I appreciated and found quite natural. The story is really interesting, and is a perfect game to introduce you to Final Fantasy as staple series elements like summon magic and black mages are very plot-centric. It is also packed with lots of fascinating locations and great side characters, which is important for a game as long as this. The content on offer is plentiful, with not only a lengthy main story but plenty of minigames and optional side content, some of which I did not even get to. And lastly, the messaging is compelling, ultimately being about what it means to truly live, which involves characters facing their own mortality, grappling with being artificially created for an unwanted purpose, and finding their own meaning and purpose for living. Overall, this game is the whole package, and if you can stomach the long-winded nature of JRPGs, FFIX is a worthy playthrough indeed.
Despite having played many modern JRPG's, FF9 was incredibly distinct. Scenes and dialogue didn't feel dragged out like most games would, so storywise I felt it was paced really well. This actually felt like a FANTASY (Surprise!) game, considering FF7 and 8 were more sci-fi than anything. The storys tone was great having a proactive protagonist that is light-hearted and witty, that everyone else bounces off of instead of having the protag react to everything instead. Though, some sidequests are incredibly tedious and absurd, like finding out to get the Excalibur II you have to reach the end of the game within 12 hours... Or doing the chocobo minigame a bunch of times to get special weapons (I hated the chocobo segments). So yeah, I might revist the game to try beat Ozma.
I have to say, i overall enjoyed the Story. I love the characters, music and locations and artstyle. my biggest problem with the game was the combat. it just did not feel all that tactical and more like rng rolls which i personally do not enjoy. i feel like other older Final Fantasy games have more tactical combat than this. Also the ending kind of left me scratching my head. With no spoilers i felt like the last area was really weird. First, there was this grand reveal teased but what was told there,we already knew. like that had already been the core theme the entire game and had already been said before if not the exact same way ,so for me it felt disappointing. then the main villain's ending was confusing. like their last scene made me feel like it was so random and undid all the motivations, they had before. and then the final ending scene felt like i copout and to me undid the beautiful message of what came right before it. so yeah the ending i did not enjoy. other than that, even though i personally could not get into the combat, it is objectively at least decent especially with the moguri mod. i do understand why so many people love this game so much and i wished i could have loved it more than i do. but just because it will not be my personal favorite does not mean it has to be that way for others. the game has a lot of amazing things going for it and as usual, nobuo uematsu's music is incredible.
