I really hate this game...and like it. To be honest, I've been playing "Feist" for a long time, even before I create a steam account. Then I didn't complete the game to the end, it seemed too difficult to me :(. And so I bought it again to go through with a sober look and a grown-up mind. I was again amazed by the wonderful artistic style of this game, but I was especially pleased with the magnificent soundtrack. But soon all my joy from the game disappeared, because I had to face disgusting, slippery gameplay, terrible level design and a huge number of bugs. For example, what incredibly annoyed me was that bosses (beasts) do not fly apart after death, but simply freeze and stand still. Only once did the game take pity on me and let me watch the animation of the boss's death. (And thanks for that!) And here's the sad end of my story: Due to another bug, I failed to defeat the final boss. The main character just jumped on the back of the beast at some point and stayed sitting on it forever. I watched the walkthrough of this game and despite all the bugs and terrible level design, as well as uninteresting annoying enemies, I wanted to go through this game personally purely on principle, but the developers stupidly did not let me do it. A very stylish, beautiful indie game with great music and design, but...forever stuck in bugs, unfortunately.
There is a lot to say about this game, So if you plan to read it all, make sure not to forget your sleeping bag or your reading glasses. And don't worry: There is no spoilers in this review. Only my personnal experience and a useful tip that will make the experience more enjoyable if you ever decide to give this game a crack. First, I should mention that this is a game with the same feel and atmosphere as Limbo and Playdead Inside. Like most of these style of games, you're playing as the victim, trying to flee from danger or fight back. You're all on your own in this game, since everyting is against you and your only ally is perseverence and the very lackluster tutorial at the start of the game. Therefore, it should be expected that game is challenging, intense and sometimes unfair because of bugs either causing a softlock and the lack of invincibility frame after being damaged causing the ennemies to chain attacks after attacks on you until you die. But while this game can be frustrating, the abundance of checkpoints more than makes up for it for the average player. It is expected to die in this game, A LOT. That's where the problem kicks in: If you try to complete each level without dying or speedrunning each level for the achievements, this game goes from challenging to infuriating. I personnally don't recommend the faints of heart playing to get the achievements in this game since some of these levels rely on RNG to succeed first try. And even then, you'd have to be lucky not to encounter one of the game's many bugs at softlocking, forcing to close the game in order to try again. This is a game that's hard to master. It should take time, patience and game knowledge before becoming a pro at this game. I have played for over 6 hours already and as someone who perfected the game by getting all of these insane achievements. I'm gonna give you one key tip that is going to help new and strggling players. TIP: - There are little tiny flies in the background, often seen as pack of 3. They are not just for the decor: Jumping on those tiny gnats actually heals your character. This is the only way your character can recover from hits. After 3 hits, it's usually over. But those white gnats really make the game more forgiving and enjoyable when knowing that interraction. Overall I loved the experience. This game is short, but the experience and artstyle are stellar even tho Feist is a buggy game. The mobile version of this game is less laggy and cheaper, but the controls are better on Steam. To summerize: Truing to be perfect the first time or play only for the achievements is not a good way to approach this masterpiece. Playing this game for the sheer experience while keeping in mind that dying is normal will make this game a great purchase. Since the ending is touching. I really do hope they make a Feist 2 or add more levels. One of my personnal favorites.
An aesthetically pleasing game, that people say has a similar artstyle to Limbo. I haven't played that game but I did find this game along with its soundtrack to be immersive. Lots of platforming, and combat, and a whole lotta running away. Everything wants to kill you. All the enemies prioritize you, which is a very annoying feature but sometimes you can use it to an advantage to have enemies hit one another trying to get at you. I will say I don't like time trials as achievements, I find them annoying, and very monotonous. The time I spent playing the actual game and any of the other achievements, I really enjoyed. The time trials were an evil I overcame after way too many tries. The physics based parts of the game can be a pain in the butt but my minor grievances aside, I think this game is worth a play.
Stunning, haunting, and savage, Feist absolutely delivers on its promised atmosphere. The closest it comes to a spoken word in its 10 levels is the owl-like 'woo' heard in its looping soundtrack, and I'm pretty sure that's a woodwind. Still, a simple but heartwarming narrative is clear throughout. Foreground and background shadows make up the majority of the visual design, so along with the lack of dialogue, I'm left imagining I'm watching all this unfold from very far away or as projections dancing across a cave wall. Though this aesthetic doesn't leave much room for variation, nor does its tight runtime, it's hard for me to find fault there considering how effective it all is. Sadly, where I find fault is with the way Feist actually plays. The whole thing is an exercise in frustration. Some of this is the dynamic creatures reacting just a little differently every attempt, some of this is the shadowy aesthetic obscuring action in dire situations, some of this is how slippery and out of control our little fluffball of a hero is. None of these would be any kind of problem, even together, if not for how tight every jump and dodge is. You're always running from or fighting something and that sort of urgency doesn't suit trial and error puzzle solving, which Feist has in spades. Deaths are quick and unpunished, even if restarting takes a little longer than I would like. But being harried all the time limits how much you learn during an attempt and makes the solution itself feel more randomly achievable than really satisfying. Before hitting the halfway point, I had stopped wishing its creatures and traps would stop killing me and started wishing Feist would stop trying to do so many contradictory things at once. I realize this was likely the intended experience. Feist was built to look dark, sound mysterious, and frustrate its players. In that way, it was a roaring success. Just not in one I found enjoyable.
Runs smoothly for the most part and very atmospherical. But it is rare that I play a game that is so brutal towards the player, and the last 60 minutes was spent fighting the final boss. Then it went from enjoyable to annoying really fast. And can't say that I am a fan of the lack of health bars.
Easy controls (only C and X), yet the game itself is extremely difficult and unforgiving. 2 hours in, only finished 1/5 of the game...if died within a level, it has to start over from beginning, but I'm getting better and better after repeating the same level 10 times, so that's really good? Difficulty level will increase in later levels, so this little game, 30 minutes a day, will take me a month to finish my first run, or I'll eventually give up. A good game for those who love challenges.
