Fantastic 4 In A Row 2

Fantastic 4 In A Row 2 is a simple digital adaptation of a board game that's better known as Connect 4. Developed by a Mexican company EnsenaSoft, this was one of their many shovelware titles they brought on Steam in 2016. While it does cost only 79c, this is a similar case as with Snakes & Ladders (PS4) and Simple Dominoes I've previously reviewed: there are many, MANY free and free to play alternatives on iOS and Android nowadays, so why would any person bother paying money for this, despite the admittedly small price tag? And come to think of it, was there ever a Fantastic 4 In A Row 1? Once you boot up the game, you are greeted with the menu screen that plays some classical music. There is not much in terms of options, as you only get to choose to play against the computer on any of the four difficulties or to play against up to four players locally. And yes, a game that's normally played with two people has a four-player mode. How does it work? I'll get to it in a bit. As you would expect, the goal is to get four of your tiles in a row, either diagonally, vertically or horizontally, before your opponent does. Nothing much to it, since we all know how that works. During gameplay, you hear some admittedly relaxing music in the background. Once you win or lose, you can choose to play again or return to the menu. The first two AI opponents were easy to beat, but jeez, the other two are way too easy to lose against. Now for the 3-4 player modes, the gimmick for this one is that you can rotate the board, which can also mean the winning combination can wrap around the board. Here's a snag though: it's only for local multiplayer, so you can't play against three or four AI opponents at once. All in all, it's a barebones package that doesn't bring anything new to the table aside the 3D board gimmick. While 79c may not be a bad deal, especially when compared to the 14.99 euro asking price for Markt+Technik's 4 in a row (which is also on consoles), or the 4 euro price of MultiDimensional 4-in-a-row by LolBozo, but with a lack of online multiplayer or achievements, this is still asking too much for what little content there is. At least Markt+Technik's 4 in a row has achievements and PSN trophies, so that's something.

I have beaten the easy AI in 4 moves and got beaten by the expert AI every time. And after 5 minutes I got bored.

As one would correctly guess, this game is based on the very popular and well known vertical board game, "Connect Four". If you're looking for such a game on your PC, this would be the one to get. I cannot comment on the single player AI, but this game plays quite well between 2 players sharing the same screen and taking turns using the mouse. To me, that's good enough for a positive review as this is the only Connect Four game on Steam (as of this writing) and the price is right as well, especially during a sale.

The music is nice, and the graphics are nice, but there's not enough gameplay. Connect-4 is a simple, solved game. Playing it against a few different levels of AI is not interesting. In human multiplayer, there was a somewhat novel concept, involving playing on three or four boards simultaneously. With further exploration of this idea, there might have been a worthwhile game found here, but it needed more development.
