horrible updates, horrible monetization, and somehow horrible balancing in a mostly PvE game the lack of a chat box is what honestly killed the game for me, i have about 120 hours into the game and i have not communicated with any player in this game. yet despite that i still recommend the game, there are ton of quests ton of exploration ton of weapons all that for game you can get on sale for $2'99
This game... If you're looking for a full-fledged "Fallout Experience" this isn't it. If you haven't played through many of the seasons, it's all turned into "Oh! But you can buy the previous seasons items!" making current seasons feel like a slog to progress through/have no meaning behind them. I write this as a HUGE fan of the Fallout Universe, playing most all and doing research on the few I haven't played personally (Yes, I'm looking at you Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel on the PS2). This isn't a "Fallout" game. This is an online Fallout-inspired universe. There's no in-depth dialogue that means anything, no big deciding factors that equate to much. If you want a game in the Fallout Universe, and like scavenging for supplies, and building a base you and your friends can gather at and go on hunting missions then this is fun. Unfortunately, my previous statement is the entirety of this game. Build a base, scavenge, go on hunting missions, repeat. Eventually you're just repeating the same missions and grinding for upgraded legendary weapons/armor/modules to attach to other weapons and armor. If you're HEAVILY into the actual Fallout Lore and looking for a "Fallout" game, I'd take a pass on this one. If you're looking to have fun and have a few friends to play with and just generally like the "Fallout-inspired" likeness, I would recommend this (On a sale at least). I won't go into the whole Fallout 1ST subscription, but it is useful if you're willing to pay the monthly subscription, and having "private" worlds that only you and your friends can join are nice. The ATOM shop is Bloated as all get out, and on a rotating schedule, so if you spend money there, make sure it's something you want. They really play into the whole FOMO thing and putting things up for a "limited" time etc etc.
I haven't played the game in years and came back to it to see if anything has changed, it hasn't. There are some sprinkles of a good game in there, but it's plagued with technical issues and greedy practices. Your inventory is very limited and keeps trying to push you to pay for a subscription to get more inventory space in a game that I already paid for. There are free games that are less greedy than this. At least in Path of Exile that whole game is free and I haven't had issues with storage nearly as much as this game that costs $40 The performance is awful. It struggles to reach 60 fps while my CPU and GPU are barely being utilized. There are these constant micro stutters every time I turn which just makes looking around unbearable. Quests are bugged, I couldn't proceed with a quest because it wanted me to use an item when it was never added to my inventory with no way of getting another one. It's a shame because there are some things I like about it. I like some of the survival mechanics and I think the enemy, weapon, and world design look neat, but the higher ups ruin it because they care more about milking your money than making an actual functioning good game. If you want a Fallout game, play any of the other mainline games. Want a good MMORPG? Also play something else.
Gleaming Depths 2nd Phase, ♥♥♥♥ It. I know how to do it and it still manages to piss me off.
First of all, I've had no serious technical issues with the game. No disconnects, crashes or game-breaking bugs. So I've given the game a fair chance with Fallout 1st for a few hours now, and while I have enjoyed many aspects of it (gunplay, sound design, locations, item variety, crafting and customization) there are three main issues why I probably won't be putting much more time into it: Combat difficulty: Starts out laughably easy. Even skipping combat-relevant perks, ignoring food and drink, and using the absolute crappiest gear, enemies don't feel threatening. Now, enemies scale to your level, so if you keep avoiding buffs and keep using bad gear, it gets more challenging. And if you subscribe to Fallout 1st, you can play on a custom world with rulers to make enemies more damaging. But this playing there is not incentivized.by the game's Seasons system as you can't complete challenges in custom worlds. Overall though, if it were just for this problem, I'd keep playing with the expectation of more challenging combat mid- and late-game. Loot spam: This has been an issue with Bethesda Fallouts since their first outing. The world is absolutely rife with all kinds of pre-war stuff that should be long gone. Inventory management is a pain as ever (the main reason to subscribe is for unlimited scrap storage and easy access to it outdoors, which reduces the bother a little, but it's still a lot of work sorting all the looted items). If the game made lootable world objects much rarer, it would be less busywork on the player, more challenging, more immersive, and the loot you would be getting would feel more valuable. But okay, with unlimited storage if you subscribe, it gets to a point where you have so many crafting materials already that you don't feel the need to pick up every desk fan and typewriter you come across, just in case. Combat balance: This is the big one, and this time I'm referring to healing. Most MMORPGs limit your healing in some way - cooldowns, mana bars, casting times. There's barely anything like that in Fallout 76, you can spam healing items to your heart's content. It's another thing that makes combat too unthreatening, except against super-aggressive enemies that hit hard and fast, overtaking your ability to spam stimpacks, healing powders, blood packs and food. Now, with other Bethesda games, you could mod this, probably by making healing come in much slower or even having a cooldown on being able to use healing items. Can't do that here. So long story short, fun world and basic gameplay, but it incentivizes a lot of organizational busywork, and its fundamentally unbalanced combat is too easy for a long time. I think casual players can certainly enjoy this but if you're looking for a balanced multiplayer action-RPG, I'm afraid this isn't it, not even with a subscription and the custom rules the game offers.
