---see where this game landed on my FPS ranking List beneath this review!--- Pretty enjoyable oldschool FPS that imitates the oldest games in the genre like Wolfenstein 3D, Catacombs, Nitemare 3D, Blake Stone etc. Don't worry though, it's a modern game just wearing some old clothes. It's far more accessible than those older games are today. Not just because Extraneum looks and sounds prettier, but the level design is pretty good and the older games used clunkier controls like the 'arrow keys' and holding 'alt' to strafe or used 'look spring' mouse movement. Perhaps what most brings the older games to mind for me is that in Extraneum you cannot aim up or down, just like you couldn't in many of those earlier games (in some you could, but not with the mouse. ..usually with the 'page up' and 'page down' keys). I liked that levels appear on a map screen, showing how many secrets/enemies you've missed in the level, as well as which levels contain a secret level entrance. No complaints artistically. The music and sounds do a decent job. The weapons felt good to use, the shotgun's got some kick too it. Graphics are simple but retro charming. On the default difficulty I think I only died once or twice. ..It's too easy. There are harder difficulty options but switching it would've meant replaying a bunch of levels. I've read that on harder difficulties the enemies might become bullet spongey, so perhaps the difficulty doesn't hit a sweet spot on any setting -I don't know-. I finished Extraneum with about 98% completition. I collected everything, but there's issues on the last few levels where it doesn't display the remaining enemy count accurately, causing you to think you've found them all when you haven't. Not much else to say. Extraneum isn't a striking, ambitious or innovative game in the genre but it is certainly enjoyable. Fans of the classic FPS's will likely enjoy it, as I did. ===================== Singleplayer PC Traditional FPS ===================== Simply personal taste.
Keep your politics and flags out of video games. You're here to entertain, nothing else.
Incredibly bland in most aspects, and the only features that stand out are the negative ones. samey-looking narrow corridors with no room for maneuverability and a terrible limited resource respawn system that doesnt even give you the common courtesy of showing you where you died in the aforementioned samey looking corridors. Save yourself the time and money, and avoid this one.

The first act is a pretty good introduction, the second act is a fairly good escalation of things, but the third act sharply declines in gameplay balance and levels become a bit of a slog. The final boss fight was neat but it glitched out and I respawned outside the arena; then, when I re-entered the arena, the door behind me locked and the boss was outside the arena now, soft-locking the fight after I almost won. Overall still worth a go, it just gets a bit rougher as it goes on.
Simple but extremely well crafted boomer shooter, highly impressed for a game I bought on a whim.
This game is an absolute blast. Highly recommended! Wish I could buy the OST
I really should point out that I don't really like FPS Games with this kind of cartoony pixel art aesthetic. Most it though stems from bad experiences, especially with games like Intrude which were just not good in the slightest. A lot of the Retro FPS games that do attempt to do something like this are mainly failures in my eye and are mainly based on Wolf3D. I would much prefer a more mature sprite style like Doom, Blood, Heretic or Ion Fury in general as those feel much better to play, not to mention they look a million times better. Before I get to my praises (and trust me, this is a solid Retro FPS) I need to say that the cutesy cuddly monsters and enemies in this game are just completely tone deaf to the genre in general. If this was a satire on FPS Games I could understand, but the fact that the game plays itself so straight for most of it makes the visuals at least from a enemy perspective a complete failure. If this was intentional, the criticism I give is more of a subjective preference to have more intimidating enemies. They kill any sort of tension within the game itself. This is still a very good Retro FPS though as it does more things right than wrong. The only other complaint I have are bosses are just running in circles and shooting at them mindlessly while occasionally killing other enemies, but there's lots to like. The gunplay has a lot of weight to it and your arsenal is always being used throughout. I found the weapons to be pretty fun thanks to decent sound design as well, which always help when you're using weapons. The best part however is the sophisticated, big levels the game offers and considering the scale for a 3 Man Dev Team, they did a fine job at making levels that are a bit different flavor from the usual bunch. You're not finding keys, but instead pulling switches to access different parts of the level which is definitely refreshing. Speaking of refreshing, the setup for the game and the protagonist during the interludes between episodes are really a breath of fresh air. So many FPS Protagonists are either psychotic, brooding, edgy, lacking in humor or failing at comedy, but the protagonist here just does his job so he gets paid. When things go down, he does his job and by the end just goes home to rest. It's a nice, grounded realistic take on a FPS Protagonist and it makes the game stand out because of it. The other things that impressed me was the music. It reminded me of Kraftwerk, specifically the album Electric Cafe which definitely increased my immersion throughout the game. I also found some of the ideas of the world to be cool, like getting money to buy ammo, armor and health via vending machines. The ones for health and armor are food related, so I found it interesting as the game explains in universe the idea behind the machines. Considering it goes for a futuristic approach, I liked the idea a lot. It made destroying barrels to find trash money to be more enjoyable than I thought it would. So in general I really enjoyed playing this. Extraneum doesn't waste your time either. It can be completed within 3 Hours and still has replayability to find many of the hard to find secrets within the game. There are also plenty of difficulty options to fit your needs. It uses a respawn system that doesn't save in game but despite the length of the levels I never felt like I needed it. If you want an easy mode with infinite free respawns, you can. If you want the base difficulty where you can respawn three times, you can. I think it might get tedious in general on harder difficulties especially since the swarms of enemies constantly become bigger throughout, but I only died maybe 4 times the entire game on the easiest setting because of being overwhelmed by enemies with little health. I actually really enjoyed this. Definitely check it out. For a $20 game you'll find a great amount of enjoyment and value here.
