"everybody's sad" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from UCSC in the USA. This is an academic exercise, not a professional game. While it has more quality than most amateur games, it is not a complete gaming experience. Student projects have limited value for gamers because they're not fully developed games, just barely functional demos that show the students progress. Steam is not a place for for-profit colleges to dump student homework assignments... and having thousands of these is not good for gamers. The students decided they are psychologists and made a crap VR tech demo where you can interact with "sad" things in your apartment. Look, I'm no psychologist and unlike UCSC students, I don't pretend to be one, but if your furniture starts talking to you, you have bigger mental health problems than depression. Anyway this isn't really a game, no game loops, but you can wave your arms around in VR and have bogus psychology thrown at you. That really isn't a game, is it. I feel bad for the students... no respectable employer would hire them if this is their portfolio piece... and why does their portfolio piece need to get shoved on Steam Direct? Why is that good for gamers? Trying to address serious issues such as mental and emotional health through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. The "developer" here is not a professional in areas of mental health and social problems, and when they use video games to pretend they are, this is not only utterly ineffective, it can be harmful. It's my opinion that it's improper to use video games to address mental health issues. Apart from the harm such hamfisted attempts at addressing social problems can cause, this offers zero benefit to PC gamers. People suffering from health issues or other social problems should seek out professional help rather than going to crap shovelware video games attempting to get attention/fame by exploiting such problems for their own benefit, as is the case here. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D graphics which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. It's VR exclusive, and that shows the developer failed to understand the most basic axiom of VR game design... if the only cool thing about your product is VR support, your product is not cool. This game is fairly dated at 7 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. It would be unethical for students to try charge money for their homework assignments, so you don't have to pay any money for this. But you'd still have to spend your time downloading this, and "time is money", as they say. There's the other problem, too... as a student project, this wasn't made for gamers. There's no requirement for them to polish and balance the game properly, all they need is something to show the faculty so they can get their grade and move on. Let's once more ask... why is that good for gamers? It's obviously not delivering a solid product. Yet here it is, on the store page, and here you are, reading my review for a student demo that's going to waste your time. While genuine amateur developers who made real products get ignored because they have to compete with this stuff. In some ways, this deluge of student projects on Steam is harmful to everyone. A peak of 7 concurrent players (according to SteamDB) for a "free" game is a disastrous public reception. Out of 130 million potential players here on Steam, almost nobody was interested. Even though this is "free". That level of rejection speaks a lot for the quality of the game. Since this is more of a student tech demo than a full, genuinely made game for gamers, and offers no Steam features, like a +1 to your game count, I can't recommend downloading this over a full, professionally made game, of which there are thousands here on Steam.
It's short and sweet, it doesnt need a big run time to get the point across, would play again
a beautiful game that evokes emotion in a way most don't :) thank you for creating this <3
Despite the house belonging to me, the doorknob told me to leave. 10/10
This game found me when I needed it tbh. I honestly love this game so much. 100% a comfort game of mine. It's so good. Anyone who is going through something you NEED to play this game. It is so sweet and wholesome and 10/10 recommend! I don't usually review games but this one deserves it!
